Creative Automation - Tips and Tricks

Hi guys,

Apart of "basic" automation such as filter cutoffs what tips or tricks to you do to help bring something new and exciting to the tabel. Something ive started doing recently is automating the release. Its great for adding tension on build ups if it a try and let me know what you think.

Automating the reverb wet level is a nice trick, espacially linking it to a sidechain signal coming from affected sound itself.

Automating the release is a well used method and I agree is a good ramp to build to a section.

I like to automate anything that can be automated and it is probably the most time consuming element in my work.

Bass can sound static, so I find adding say a little more saturation as the track develops, and perhaps increasing and decreasing a phaser on the higher bass parts can give a little more life to things.

Automation is smonething like what a guitarist does naturally as the track progresses, for example playing with more intensity and using foot pedal effects at certain points.

Just about every crash / bang / reverse / blip I will automate and rarely are any 2 instances the same.

Hi hats in particular will be automated throughout, mainly in terms of volume, filters, eq ramps and so on.

Yea all round automation is a powerful thang.

i do this. On the synths side i like to automate the detune, filter cut off and resonance, the amps... i suggest to experiment there are cool things to do.

I automate so much stuff i wouldnt know where to start - one nice one is automating sends on percussion busses for example...but the list is really endless
