Only in ....

You Guessed it, Floh-Ri-Duh

http://developers.slashdot.org/stor...ence-department

quote:
Wow, no one saw this coming. The University of Florida announced this past week that it was dropping its computer science department, which will allow it to save about $1.7 million. The school is eliminating all funding for teaching assistants in computer science, cutting the graduate and research programs entirely, and moving the tattered remnants into other departments.

Lets get this straight: in the midst of a technology revolution, with a shortage of engineers and computer scientists, UF decides to cut computer science completely?

Of course, why cut the liberal arts department? Where would this world be without all those Creative Writing majors (soon-to-be-baristas at Starbucks)?

Rick Scott.

How corrupt can a governor get?

Doesn't matter because the American citizenry keeps electing these pieces of shit to office.

I'm happy I'm graduating this year. The annual 15 percent - soon to be more - tuition hikes are ridiculous. And it's all because of this man.

This education system needs reform, I happen to admire European education. My German friends pay nothing (or almost nothing) for higher education, they have a much better grasp of their field, they advance quicker, they go into the workforce quicker and they are best prepared (not universal). In addition, Their system is not structured to milk or generate the profits that US institutions have grown used to. And for what purpose? to build a new Football stadium.

Make exams tougher all together, make it selective, but make education free for citizens. If you want profit, generate that by funding, research projects, international students, i don't know. 'Oh, but we can't make the exams and selection process tougher, all the others will be 'left behind'. Well, tough luck, the German system filters out their students from early on. We should do the same.

Make the schools tough, free, and selective only to those that really want to pursue their education. Young adults leaving school with enormous debt is not the right way to treat the citizenry of any country.

So what happens to students who are currently enrolled as computer science majors

I remember reading somewhere that they were transferring everything to hardware instead of software. And mainly they're cutting funding for research, not cutting the department entirely.

That's unfortunate, because my buddy Luke moved back to Florida with the intention to get his PHD in CS at UF but looks like that won't be happening

The problems that the US has with education and tuition for post-secondary schools makes me appreciate Ontario education even more. OSAP ftw. Guaranteed loan for me. I gotta pay it back when I start work, but that shit is interest free up to 6 months after I graduate.

This thread makes me want to do a creative writing major.

Not sure this thread warrants such a response. I mean, come on, there are a lot better reasons to want to leave the U.S. ; this thread, for example...

Don't think becoming ex-patriots (or at the very least attaining dual citizenship) isn't on some of our bucket lists. I mean, have you been to America, outside of New York!? Well, if you haven't, it's mostly just ewoks & sand-people...

Oh, also America stops you from leaving America. You know that whole spiel about Freedom and Liberty? That's how they get you...

People have the right to bitch, just like your dumb ass has the right to express your thoughts on the web. Your post is pointless, stop bitching about peoples bitching.

PS. haters gonna hate.
PSS. Dual Citizenship FTW

Couldn't have said it better myself. This bursting student loan bubble is going to end up contributing to another recession in this country. You don't make advances in the economy by putting the next generation of skilled laborers thousands of dollars in debt.

Also: http://www.sunshineslate.com/2012/0...crisis-funding/

quote:
When he signed the 2012-13 budget, Gov. Rick Scott used his veto power to nix four pages of expenditures from the bill.

Of course, not everyone is happy about what got cut. Topping the list: victims of rape.

Thats right, Gov. Scott vetoed the $1.5 million that was to go to the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence (FCASV) to support 30 rape crisis centers. And to make matters worse, Scott vetoed the councils money halfway through Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Yikes.

Executive Director of the FCASV, Jennifer Dritt, was blindsided by Scotts pen stroke.

We are disappointed, Dritt said, as reported by The Florida Independent. We are really surprised and frankly stunned [and] are trying to figure out what the heck happened.

For his part, Scott stands by his vetoes, saying that if he vetoed them, it was because they werent a good use of taxpayers money and did not serve a statewide need.

Rick Scott

True, the entire state will not be raped at the same time. But still, not a good moment for a bad publicity stunt like this with the whole Republican party smarting from weeks of policy decisions and controversial new state laws that have been characterized as being anti-women.

Cutting funding to help rape victims is about as anti-women as you can get.

If ol' Skullhead wins re-election in FL, then they truly deserve what they get.

That's because your first comment could have easily be written by someone driving a '92 Ford Ranger pickup truck with confederate flags plastered all over it. You're just as bad.

If this thread makes you want to leave America, please do.
You pointed out that "people are allowed to bitch" but you're not even criticizing anything at all. Literally all you said was "This thread makes me want to leave America..."

Well then, fucking do it you gigantic birth canal.
