Worm Popper My friend turned into a transgender woman.

In Avana-esque fashion, my friend Jesse broke the news to his Facebook that he has become a transgender woman named "Rachel" (I think that's a boring fucking name but whatever). I just saw her like 2 weeks ago and he had a full-on man beard at the time. Now she's a chick. ("he"/"she" terms confuse the fuck out of me now) She's talking about growing breasts and wearing dresses and all that stuff. I never knew Adam Vana before she became Avana. How does one adjust to the new change? Just act normal? I'm not sure how I'm going to react the next time I see her. It's like meeting a different person altogether.

Thoughts? Suggestions? Jokes?

My only real comment is.... why the fuck would she need to change her name?

Good point. My only guess is she wanted to make a clear distinction that she is in fact a girl now, whereas Jesse can be both.

I'm having hard time believing someone who wants to change into a woman would wear a beard. Also is that possible if she's taking hormones ?

I don't think she has started hormone treatments yet.

Growing breasts and wearing dresses does not "make" someone a man or a woman. That's because a trans woman is already a woman.

I don't know what you mean by "act normal". They simply act like who they've always been, or who they always felt they were. Perhaps a little more comfortably and confidently than before their transition.

What do you mean you don't know what I mean by "act normal"? I've known this guy for years and all of a sudden he's a chick. It's kind of a strange transition to me, it's not like I can just flip a switch and see that he's always been a woman. It's going to take some time to get used to.

And no I'm not posting her FB link.

Act the same way you'd act if anyone enacted some drastic and sudden change upon their appearance - like if someone famed for their long hair came back from the barber one day with a crew cut, perhaps.

'Kentucky Tranny' is definitely going to be the name for my next Acid/Jazzcore/Bluegrass jug band.

Ah.. I thought you were wondering how the transition is for them, not for yourself.

Just try to be supportive, you'll get used to it eventually.

I call the Harmonica.

With a name like zip, you're definitely on the kazoo. And sometimes the spoon, but only for those melodic outros.

To add to this, I think that 'be supportive' is usually misconstrued advice with a lot of people. You don't need to talk about how you've seen Priscilla, Queen of the Desert 167 times. (btw, can I have my BluRay back? Thanks.)

Just ask them questions, if you're curious. With respect, of course. They're still the exact same people, but now they are going through a time where they are becoming increasingly self-aware and questioning who they are, and that's nothing but a great thing. They'll likely appreciate that you would like to understand them better, rather than merely judge - or sometimes worse still - be this gleeful, YO GO GURL! fucking annoying shit, who treats their trans friends more like campaign platforms than actual human beings.

You're probably concerned with how you'll carry yourself out of good intention as you don't want to offend or have awkward, alienating experiences, but I think you ought to think less of yourself and be more concerned with understanding what your friend is going through. You would be much better off focusing on how she feels, as she's the one going through such an immense transition.
If you try to be genuinely empathetic with people, I think that you really can't go wrong most of the time.

Posted by Silky Johnson on Apr-25-2012 16:52:

I think you should be honest with your friend and express how awkward this is for you, and suggest some ways he could make you feel more comfortable with his/her change.

Tell her that you're happy about it because you always wanted to bang her.

Ask to see her penis one last time before she cuts it off.

You spelt 'taste' wrong.

Hal.

Maybe the beard was a last attempt to deny or hide who they are.. I'm still learning about transgendered women and a lot of what I have learned is from having avana on my Facebook. I think she's actually pretty cool! I would probably agree with what jenny said, and maybe caution not to pry too much as it's still her personal life and she might not be comfortable sharing everything. But I doubt I even have to mention that as you're a pretty smart guy nick... GEE WILIKERS!!

Avana removed me from my Facebook when I called her out for being a preachy soap-box **** who can't take a joke. That whole thing when Banora said she looked in the mirror one morning and saw a tranny Draco Malfoy somehow seriously offended Avana and I just found that to be a bunch of horseshit. I highly doubt Rachel will be interested in fighting for transgender rights and getting all preachy because that's just not who she is. She's very genuine, nice, and has always been friendly to me.

Yeah I mean I'm not gonna start discussing her future with her penis or anything. It just kinda took me by surprise and I wanted to see if anyone here has dealt with this on a personal level. I won't pry but I won't be afraid to ask questions.
