Suspect named in the bizarre mailed body parts case

 Montreal police are looking for a Toronto man after Tuesday�s gruesome discovery of body parts in Ottawa and Montreal. Officers have issued a Canada-wide warrant for Rocco Luka Magnotta, 29. Magnotta is also known as Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov. Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere said the suspect and victim knew each other and the case is not linked to organized crime. Two packages containing severed body parts made their way through Ottawa's mail system � one going all the way to the Conservative party's headquarters on Tuesday. There could be more body parts within the Canada Post system, Lafreniere said. �This is one of the hypotheses we�re considering,� he said. Police said the victim is a white male, but his identity is not known at this time. A man by the same name as the suspect has a huge presence on the Internet: as a low-budget adult film actor and for controversial videos he has posted online in the past. A "Luka Magnotta" is accused by the OSPCA of killing kittens. "Luka Magnotta" also wrote a blog post called "How To Completely Disappear and Never be Found." Magnotta had been living in a Montreal apartment building for about four months. The building manager tells The Canadian Press that Magnotta seemed like a nice guy. That building that is now at the epicentre of the investigation. A man's torso was found in a locked suitcase behind the building on Tuesday. Police in masks have been combing through Apartment 208 in the brick building, zeroing in on that particular unit from which a rotten stench was drifting out, says a building resident. Officers believe the foot and a hand discovered in Ottawa Tuesday are linked to the torso. Police have found other body parts, but wouldn't say what they had found. The first grisly discovery was made Tuesday morning when a blood-splattered package containing a severed foot was sent to the Tory main office just a few blocks away from Parliament Hill. Just hours later, authorities intercepted a second package containing yet another severed human body part. That second package contained a human hand, Ottawa police confirmed Wednesday. The Liberal Party could not confirm reports the second package had been addressed to their offices. Both packages originated in Montreal, Ottawa police said. Because of that, Montreal police have taken over the investigation. Canada Post said it was collaborating with police and said it couldn't comment further as a police probe was underway. The package containing the foot was opened by Prime Minister Stephen Harper's campaign manager Jenni Byrne. She saw the blood and smelled a foul odour and called police, according to a Conservative party statement. Many in Ottawa have been set on edge ever since the first reports of the severed foot sent to Tory headquarters began to spread. "It's just awful," said Conservative MP Brad Trost, who showed up at party headquarters not long after the first package was delivered yesterday. "I don't think any of us are thinking this necessarily has anything to with politics." Police have said the package containing the severed foot was addressed to the Conservative Party of Canada and not to a specific person. Steve Hodgson, a police sergeant who arrived at 130 Albert Street, just three blocks south of Parliament Hill, said the package was delivered by Canada Post and had been partially opened by a receptionist at the party's 12th floor headquarters before police were called. "It wasn't opened any further," he said. "It was our Hazmat Team that eventually took a look at it." A spokesman for the Conservative party would only say that a suspicious package was sent to their office before referring all questions to Ottawa police. Police said Magnotta has no criminal record. |
