Roll Call: Markus Schulz @ Stereo, Friday June 15

douchebags and trancevestites unite

I'm there. Haven't listened to a trance set over 3-4 years. Should be very interesting. I hope he's going to drop that techy Dakota style on those speakers.

I'm there! Been looking forward to this event ever since they announced it. Markus will not disappoint.

Review of the night!

Got in around 3am, no line up, place was packed. Opening Dj was so bad I never seen such a boring crowd and dance floor at Stereo. Markus came on at 3:45. Started off hard. First hour and half were all tracks from his WMC set in April. After that, played a good 30 minutes of clubbish/mainstream selection of tracks. Finally after 2 hours, started to mix it up and play some prog and some new releases. Between 8 to 10:30, signature "Dakota" style kind of tracks were played, he finally decided to test out MORE new darker/techy/proggy type of tracks. Some obvious cheese and vocal tracks were played now and then to brighten up the set!

Overall, It was a good set. The crowd was loving every minute till the end. He got the place full till 10 which I haven't seen done since Cox played on labor day weekend.
To my taste and expectations, I was hoping for him to start slow and build up from there. I would have preferred him to play all his last few hour(s) stuff in the beginning rather than so late. His style of music really suited Stereo. I recall now there were some random technical difficulties that occured frequently during his set that would make him pause and shrug his shoulders? I can definitely see him return once a year to the temple. His style of music really suits that venue and sound system.

Unbelievable set by Markus. Loved the progression and there were hardly any misses for the entire 7 hours. There was a lot of mutual love between the crowd and Markus and the guy was good even natured enough to take pictures and autographs after his marathon show without taking any breaks or sitting down. Such a beast.

The night was everything that I expected and more. I sincerely hope that Stereo books him once a year for the same type of extended set event.

Btw the crowd was so good and so much fun. Nobody created any drama and everyone gave each other enough space. It was all about the music and everyone really seemed to appreciate how special that night was.

Thank you Markus and thank you Stereo!

Seany - I did notice that there were around 4-5 sound glitches throughout the night and Markus was visibly shaking his head whenever it happened. Gladly each one was only for a micro-second and did not interfere with the overall flow.

To Stereo - I know that Stereo only books around 4 trance acts a year and with Menno/Markus so far there are 2 slots left. My wishlist is to get John O'Callaghan back and maybe Leon Bolier/Ferry Corsten for the 2nd slot.

Arrived @ the temple around 3:40ish, no line-up quick entrance. Once I got in I could not believe how many peeps were there. The crowed was young and soo many gorgeous girls :O. He started off with a bang and went pretty much the same way trough out the whole set. He had basically a trancy build up and then a techish drop. It sounded very well on those speakers.
I quickly realized that it's no longer my type of music. Was @ Hernan Cattaneo last week, and still can't get over that set . Didn't really enjoy after the 3rd hour, the set became way too predictable.
Party was amazing tho, the crowed was LOVING HIM and he was loving the crowed.. I think he spent the whole 7 hours smiling. Was funny to see Paul Oakenfold @ the party.

John O'Callaghan was last at Stereo on Dec 2nd, 2011 and he was fantastic. When I suggested JOC for Stereo I was thinking of having him at around the same time. Meanwhile there's Leon/Ferry that can be booked. At least those are my personal wishlist DJs for Stereo.

Montreal was filled with EDM talent that night with Oakenfold playing at Arena + Laidback Luke/Bennasi at the New City Gas. Was very happy to see what a sold out Stereo night looked like because even though the place was packed there was still enough room to dance and breathe.

Loved the night had a great time. I was very excited to hear Markus sound coming out of Stereo's speakers but i have to agree with his set being predictable or having a moment of ''WOW what did he do just there that was AAwsome'' Nonetheless I had an awsome time and would do it again.

Awesome set, bit of something for everyone. If you wanted hard, dark, twisted and sinister, he delivered but if you wanted epic and melodic, classic trance, those tracks were included too.

One of the hardest working djs who gets it, imo. He's at all the festivals (was spinning at a festival at Soldier Field only hours after Stereo) but as mentioned earlier, definitely seemed to appreciate the opportunity to test out tracks he probably couldn't fully play at that festival or say, the cheesy Marquee, where he is a resident.

Props to Stereo for relaxing its rules on cameras and glowsticks, speaker dancing, etc. Good crowd, young and enthusiastic, though it could have used more than only two or three hot chicks

As for Malek's set, it was a bit too underwhelming I thought. Obviously you don't want to upstage the headliner but one also has to not go too deep in the other end either. Markus really had to pick us up from the dead, imo.

From his twitter feed:

Montreal + 7 hour set = win. Merci beaucoup! @StereoMtl

OMG!! (((STEREO)))!!! Details later. aghhhhhhh!

Thanks Montreal. That is why you are 1 of my favorite cities in world. Everyone needs to make a road trip here next time. On way to Chicago.

Amazing energy all 7 hours! RT @JessBertrance: @MarkusSchulz On our end it was epic slaying but on yours? Did u feel the stereo crowd?

Youre right Spin. My biggest concern was to not upstage the headliner which ended up with a lack of energy during my set... I guess it wasnt my best day at the office...

you had some very very good tracks but opening for a guy with his status must be very intimidating. I only caught half your set, loved the first 30 mins, great prog, great flow but when you went downtempo for Markus, the place went on reset again, the dark lighting didn`t help either.

Thanks for the post, shows you have thick skin and good character (which you need in this biz) and everyone left the place happy. To overwhelm the dj would have been worse, imo. I have some sets from you from before and i can say you're talented.

This is could be a great debate actually, why should the opening dj restrain himself? just common cutesy?

Posted by WittyHandle on Jun-19-2012 03:52:

Really?

RA had an excellent article a few years back on the subject called "The Esoteric Art of the Opening DJ"

I don't give a fuck if you play trance or beebop, when I'm at a show, I want to feel like the artist is trying their best to deliver what they're passionate about. And the only thing that inspires me more than seeing someone bust their fucking ass trying their hardest to play to the best of their abilities, is someone that can put their personal aspirations aside, especially on a huge night like that, for the greater goal. You said it yourself, you were trying not to upstage the headliner and I have been in the exact same position as you, at the exact same venue with most likely 10% of DJ Experience you have. Trust me, I know what it's like. You had that thought of not overshadowing Markus running through your head the whole night and it probably started fucking with you, but you realized that no one is there to see you, they're there to see markus. I wasn't there on that night, nor do I ever go to the club on prog/trance nights but you have earned yourself a new fan. please inform me when you play next.

Trance is not my cup of tea, but an honest & self-critical artist is.

cheers,

Michael

That is not even a debate in my opinion. At all the parties I throw (Mutek also does that), I ask every DJ to shut down the music after their set in order to make a clear separation between each act and allow the DJs to get a good round of applause.

This also allows every DJ to start off their sets with cool intros and end them with closing tracks.

Some may think that it breaks the momentum but I actually think it helps build a story from the ground up.

Of course you have to take into account variables such as time you play, dance floor mood etc but yeah I've never considered any DJ as ''opening act'' for another DJ. You are booked to perform a show, at an early timeslot, it just so happens that you have Markus Shulz playing after you...it doesn't make you less important imo.
