AudioMIDI No-Brainer: FXpansion Etch Filter - $20!!!

This is possibly the best no-brainer ever. Etch for $20. I've owned it for a few months and it's one of the best filter plugins around IMO.

Thought I'd snap this one up too. Thing is I'm not able to download the plug-in yet, being told my order will be shipped and arrive between 23rd July and the 1st of Aug.
My no-brainer purchases in the past were all available via download so I'm not sure what's up this time, but I've contacted Audio-Midi about this.

I'm quite certain that it is download-only. AudioMIDI's ordering system was recently revamped, and still leaves a lot to be desired. If you've never ordered a "no-brainer" from them, just be aware that they get slammed with orders in the hours after the announcement (which I received about an hour ago), so they can be a little slow in delivering the download link/serial number.

Yeah, I thought that was the case too. Just going to wait and watch my inbox for a bit now.

In the "Product Detail" was a link for PayPal users - that maybe a way of getting this via download - did you do that way?

No, I just placed the order normally via credit card, didn't notice the paypal option tbh. Still I don't think that would matter.

In case you're not familiar with Etch, it's essentially two of the DCAM Synth Squad filters with a load of modulation capabilities and a really neat and intuitive interface. Here's the promo:

...and here's a tutorial:

I bought it weeks ago also, and I believe this is one of the best filter plugins I've heard yet, its a real steal for $20.

Purchased. Waiting on the download link now and/or serial number.

I'm going to have to resist this. I've already got Volcano so I really don't need this and I'm really trying to keep my plugin count as low as possible.

Looks great though

meh...cant really go wrong for $20 - ill take one

played around with this today - the self-oscillation is nice, its got that chewy sound which is cool, nice for fx sweeps etc....

The Phatty filter on sub bass is pretty wicked, cutoff down to around 45-50hz and a little reso. it sounds monsterous for me, and doesn't sound digital. I really fell in love with this filter, i'm using Etch on just about everything now. Even the extra modules like the distortion and compressor sound really nice on alot of material even with the lack of controls.

I must play around with it more - there are los and lots of controls etc on it so will take a while to get to grips with it fully

I still prefer my UAD Moog at the moment but maybe thats because its more simple to use off the bat.....

It uses the same modulation approach that the DCAM synths use, if you're familiar with them. Either way, watch the tutorial video I posted earlier and you'll get to grips with it very quickly. It's actually pretty intuitive once you understand how to set your source/target and level, and the UI provides good visual feedback to help you see what's going on.

call me a newb, but wuts a filter for if you already have one in your synth?

Posted by cryophonik on Jul-09-2012 16:06:

Filter plugins are mostly useful for audio, but you can apply them to synth tracks to get different flavors of filters, more/better/different modulation options, etc. It's just another set of effects to have in your toolbox.

You could use them on drums, audio loops, for fx etc... Filters on softsynths are only beginning to get where they should be recently imo

FYI - today is the last day for this no-brainer.
