this is what u make producing trance

Just for your info, i got royalty statements for some old tracks..

people keep asking here these "how much i get paid if i get a release " questions so i decided to share latest roaylty statements. I have received about 2k before but here you can see amount of sales and what i got etc..

Track was in top-10 of audiojelly trance chart and original (kingdom fall) sold 250 copies.

--removed images--

But here's some info:

.....

Costs & Expenses
Mastering -30.00
Promotion -7.50
Remix1 -20.80
Remix2 -21.58
Remix3 -9.62
Cover Artwork & Banners -12.50
TOTAL -102.00
Expense Share (50%) -51.00

Digital Downloads
[Full Release] 12 7.90

This is the final statement of a great label. Not a signle bad word for a Alter Ego Records, dont know why they're quitting.
Total income from these tracks are about 2k euros plus publishing what gave me about 1k euros top of this

What do you mean by this? I haven't heard anything about Alter Ego Records quitting.

We are closing this company and this years set of accounts by the end of August 2012 which means you MUST submit an invoice using the link below to collect your royalites. You must do this by no later than August 17th.

I must again say, second best label i've ever deal with. Best is 5am or Five AM when garreth (emery) and alexis was leading it.

I made about $1,000 USD off famicom. That was nice. Most of it was from the Ferry Corsten compilation CD release. I imagine a release that goes on, say, an Anjunabeats CD compilation makes closer to 10K USD.

Alter Ego definitely started slowing down with their releases around 2008, so I'm not surprised to see this.

Thanks for sharing, Miikka.

No problem.

Hey what does publishing mean(sorry hehe), physical format, licensing? Curious as it blows away your digital download royalties.

Yeah, I was also surprised they charged you for mastering, too. I haven't seen that in my (limited) experience. Even though they did cover 50% of it, apparently.

That's a bummer. I've got a track coming out on an AE compilation CD in A few weeks, and they've been advertising some competitions, etc., around the forums recently, so it does come as a surprise to me. They're definitely the best label I've ever been fortunate enough to work with, so it's really unfortunate to see them close their doors.

Posted by MSZ on Jul-11-2012 01:28:

AE always responded to my demos, even if they werent their cup of tea, I respect that :} RIP(yet another label).

i just spoke to Blugazer, an artist on alter ego as well, who said that the accounts closing in August have to do with an ownership change that happened a year back but to his knowledge the current owners don't have any plans of closing up shop

Posted by cryophonik on Jul-11-2012 02:18:

That's encouraging news. Thanks for looking into it, Excess.

I'd be surprised if there isn't a confidentiality clause in the contract regarding the disclosure of sales and such. Apart from the information itself, what is your intention?

No intention, just posted for fun because you never see these on any forums or web pages and people keep asking (sales, costs, expenses etc). But i edited the first post and removed image links, because im really not sure if i can share this kind of information or not.. Didnt even thought about that until your post

Posted by Storyteller on Jul-11-2012 13:36:

You've got to be careful with those things . Far from every contract has such a clause though, but I think I've got one or 2 that are quite strict regarding statement details.

It is a reality check for most people getting into this whole music thing . I must say my experiences are similar to the amounts shown in your original post.

Could it more or less be seen as a way of venting some frustrations?

Yeah, I just misread the email! Sorry!

And as I said - one of the best labels out there!

Posted by cryophonik on Jul-11-2012 20:25:

Thanks for the update, Luigi, and glad to hear that you guys are still going strong.

Posted by Excess on Jul-11-2012 20:36:

i had no idea so many AE producers hung around here lol

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Jul-11-2012 21:16:

i find it incredible that the mastering charges are recouped from the artist royalty. Saw this twice on here in the last week. More so that artists actually put up with it or sign a contract that would not state explicitly that this is not something you can recoup. Boggles my mind why people would even bother with a label that even has such low selling people on their roster. I mean it is evident they don't really give a fuck or think you are worth a fuck.

Alter Ego gets really good airplay on 'A State Of Trance'.

Posted by PassiePassion on Jul-11-2012 21:45:

If you want to know more about download contracts.
Have a look at my old topic on another closed forum.
I summed up most of the important things you need to know about.
And even pointed out a site to check your own contract.
I'm part of FNV Kiem the Dutch musician foundation.
If your a member there then you can even get free legal support.

If the Admins-mods want the topic here too as a sticky ,let me know where and i'll post it here too

Checklist For Download Contracts
http://trance.nu/v4/forum/viewtopic.php?t=150327

Get an on the side statement that clearly states what costs the downloadgiver can make while spreading 1 download.

So the Mastering costs should be noted somewhere in your contract !
Read full topic to see WHY it should be in the contract.

If it's not in the contract i would ask for it to be added.
So you know what costs the label may take from the netto income !

This sounds so wrong on many levels.

Yes, god forbid that a successful trance label get airplay on popular trance broadcasts.

really good airplay on all the podcasts really, just depends on what type of track it is. AE is and has been doing quite well in terms of support from DJs
