DJ BIOGRAPHIES_

OLIVER LIEB.
Frankfurt based DJ & producer Oliver Lieb was born in 1969. Since 1988 he is involved in the production of electronic music. No matter if its Techno, House, Electro or just "electronic music, within 20 years and the release of more than 250 singles including remixes for Faithless, Moby, Snap, Yello, Human League, Mory Kante, Utah Saints to name a few.

Oliver made it into the premier league of international Producers back in the late 90's. He always keeps surprising and amazing people with his extraordinary sounds and diversity. At the age of 14 he started playing bass in several Funk/Soul/Jazz bands. Oliver also got in touch with electronic music (Pink Floyd, Kraftwerk,Yello, Jean-Michel Jarre) and discovered a new and an endless horizon of expressing himself.

In late 1989 Olivers first record FORCE LEGATOSystem got released by Dorian Gray resident DJ Torsten Fenslau on his Abfahrt label. The single gained great worldwide reactions and almost hit the official German charts.

In the years to follow Oliver released everything in the electronic genres from downtempo and chill-out to hard experimental techno and trance. His project Spicelab on Sven Vths legendary Harthouse label established a platform for his highly appreciated sounds, which developed into one of the most important projects of the label including the release of three full length album releases.
Soon it was clear that Olivers creativity was far away from reaching its limits and as Oliver never wanted to focus on just one specific genre he simply created several pseudonyms for each of his different styles. His LSG and Paragliders releases on Superstition Rec. are still considered as one of the most influencing and timeless trance projects and were developed for more than 10 years and 5 Albums.

His maxis and albums got licensed on Hooj Choons, Yoshitoshi, Platipus, Duty Free, Magic Muzic and many others. After leaving Superstition in 2004 it was time for doing something new especially since the whole music scene went through big changes and somehow redefined itself. After locking himself into his studio to create new sounds and going into all kind of different directions Oliver announced the start of his own label Maschine in summer 2005 which is distributed worldwide by Neuton and online exclusively through Beatport and released his first single Solieb- Circus Maximus in July. The reactions were great and two more maxis followed until the end of 2005. Maschine is about to turn into a main source for high quality forward electronic music and grabs more and more peoples attention.

In 2007 Oliver started a new company doing mastering and cutting vinyl. After all this was a logic step since he is known for a very high sound standard on his own productions and so he added some high end analog mastering gear to his studio to guarantee sound quality enhancement also for his clients.
After the endless process of planning, constructions and moving in to the new studio and finally focusing on the new company he took a bit of a break from producing and djing -also to focus on a new sound and directions.

In 2010 Oliver started a new label Solieb Digital at Beatport to re-release his old music after re-mastering and polishing the tracks. So far his Recycle or Die release as well as Paragliders Lithium EP, two albums from Spicelab and just now the L.S.G. - Blueprint EP were released, LSG The Black Album and many more are following soon.

Since late 2010/early 2011 Oliver has started working again on new productions. The first release Parallax was an exclusive track for John Digweeds Structures two CD followed in July by the Oliver Lieb - Epsilon Eridani EP - both on Bedrock.
After upgrading and changing his studio setup in Summer 2011 he also appeared as a remixer again starting with Ioan Gamboas "Butterfly Effect" on Somebodys Story Music. In January 2012 there was a remix for Davide Cali on Reiz Musik, followed in February by a remix for Microtrauma "Aktin" on Microtonal.

End of February 2012 was a mix cd out on Bedrock by Oliver Lieb & Jimmy van M. "The Audible Suspects" followed by a few original releases and to be continued.

GWILL MORRIS.
Gwill Morris was thrust into the limelight of the music scene when he was picked by Mixmag as one of the "Stars for 2001". His Production alias "Main Element" is known to many, the first outings Hedfuk and Delta of Venus earning inclusions on Nick Warren's Global Underground Compilation as well as Lucien Foort's Singularity, not to mention Multitude of American Compilations. He followed that up with Fuktities on a smaller label " Midset" earning acclaim from Mike Truman "Hybrid" who proclaimed it his "Tune of Miami" in 2001. Since then his Production career has gone from strength to strength. Solo productions Generation, and Narcosis were well received, and production vocal number "Take Me Down" appeared on Sasha and Digweed Essential Mix from Miami, rumour has it that Sasha was overheard proclaiming it THE tune of the Delta Heavy tour, and not to forget the "James Holden" Balance CD favourite "Gill Norris - Forme". Remix offers soon after rolled in from Labels including Bedrock, Additive, Polyester, Vapour, Automatic and Deviant.

Other Productions credits include Ogenki Clinic - First Light / Kirei, with his partner in production crime James Holden, described by Mixmag as "The best Progressive House Tune Ever!". Ogenki Clinic mix of Ashtrax- Digital Reason took the Progressive & Trance clubs by storm worldwide. He was also part of the trio that Produced the much acclaimed Future Sound Collective.

Anyone who has seen him perform behind the decks will know that his ability is not limited to the studio. His career spans back for years beyond his forays into production : " I had been DJing for years before i started producing and still think of myself as a DJ first and foremost. I think it's what i do best." His Sets are consistently well Programmed and betray his ability to connect with the crowd : " I think DJing is all about watching and getting into the mindset of what the crowd are into, im not interested in DJ's who just play what they like and crap on about educating people. You go to a club to dance and have a good time". He varied tastes and tight mixing have seen him provide everything from Deep House to Progressive House, Trance & Techno in clubs including ( The Limelight "Newyork", Q-Bar and Zone "Melbourne", Sounds "Sydney", NO-UFO! "Berlin", Bedrock, Ministry Of Sound and Elements "London".

Ha! I'll stick it in my dairy and hope for the best

Just saw a Twitter post by JOOF, regarding a 5 hour set in the main room of Passion in the near future. I think I'll have to sign up for that one also.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Jul-17-2012 04:09:

Yeah, I'll be at that as well.

Posted by Lews on Jul-18-2012 03:38:

So fucking excited for this. Still have to figure out the particulars, but it's damn well going to happen one way or another.

Yeah, I thought you lived in America. Good to hear you're coming over for a while

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Aug-08-2012 16:06:

Argh. Just found out that Hernan Cattaneo is playing at Sound Control in Manchester on the same night. There hasn't been a decent night around here for two months, and soon as September hits you get two brilliant line-ups on the same night!

Is that for Tangled? Those nights are great.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Aug-09-2012 16:17:

Yeah it is. Sound Control is a wicked venue as well. Would be awesome to see Cattaneo in the loft. Argh!

3hr of Oliver Lieb... Prog master Gwill Morris starting warming up... Mark Plasma and Ian Wire banging out hands in the air forgotten trance tunage. What more do you want

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Aug-29-2012 12:13:

I will, don't worry. Went to the last one as well. I'm glad you've moved venues as well - I like the Roadhouse, and Dry Live never really had the soundsystem for loud dance music.

Posted by Lews on Sep-04-2012 22:45:

Matt, you better be there. I'm coming, and I'm from the West Coast of the United States. You have no excuse

I was really looking forward to this night, if only for finally meeting you guys, but unfortunately I'm now unable to make it

I've been asked to warm up for Paul van Dyk in Berlin this weekend..... and it was kind of hard to say no (and I was only asked yesterday).

I hope that qualifies as some kind of excuse!

You're here for a while, right? I'm sure there will be another night on that we can all go to

Come on then, how was it?

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Sep-10-2012 22:32:

It was very good. Gwill Morris played a great opening set, ramped up the energy pretty quickly and kept it quite hard. The only track I remember knowing was Opus III - It's Going To Be A Fine Day. Lieb's set was roughly similar to his Cream Reunion set, but with an hour more to play with he used more tracks that weren't his own. He started off with an extended intro of spacey atmospherics before getting into some old school trance and techno (playing tracks like Zyon - No Fate) and built up into some big hitters of his own (Hidden Suns Of Venus, Dreamstate), then took it down into thumping and percussive techno before ending on a flourish of anthems. The last four tracks were The Ambassador - Fade, Netherworld, Lost Vagueness and Subraumstimulation. Took the roof clean off.

There were a number of niggling issues that kept it from being a perfect night, in my opinion. Lieb's mixing was rough in places, with some cueing errors leading to clangs that he didn't seem to want to correct. I also think he went slightly too deep into techno minimalism - while it made the epic ending of the set stand out even more, there was a 10-15 minute spell where he played a succession of extremely stripped down tracks and killed my buzz somewhat. And I thought the closing DJ got it totally wrong, opting to play full-on Gatecrasher supersaw fare, after three hours of pounding Germanic tech-trance. But that was only the last 30 minutes of the night, so no great loss.

I actually haven't heard many Lieb tunes out in a club before, and last night made me appreciated just how well mixed and produced his tracks are. Even the oldest stuff from the early '90s was absolutely pounding, with the clean hardness of serious techno combining with washes of trancey melody. I was particularly struck by how fucking good Aquilia - Dreamstate sounded. I've liked that track since GU:013 but always regarded it as quite a deep progressive track, but when the bassline came in on Saturday it absolutely destroyed the dancefloor.

The crowd and atmosphere were really good - everyone was bang up for it and very friendly. I got chatting to quite a few random people who I temporarily befriended over the course of the night. And honestly, the whole trip out was fantastic. Rocking up into Manchester Piccadilly on a Saturday night is always an electrifying experience, and wandering around record shopping in the sunshine the next day was an ideal come-down.

Posted by Acton on Sep-12-2012 12:29:

Awesome, it sounds like I missed out on a great night. I've not heard The Ambassador - Fade since Oakey played it at Cream about 11 years ago, what a track that is.

I had a friend who attended the Tangled gig, he said he had no regrets missing Lieb as he thought Hernan was amazing.

My Saturday was spent going through tunes, followed by a 6am flight from Manchester. The gig was awesome, warming up for Paul on a 25th floor terrace in the center of Berlin, in 30 degree sunshine was something very special for me.

It appears a good weekend was had by all!

Indeed! It was quite an excellent night, in my opinion. As Jack said, Lieb made a few mixing mistakes throughout and stayed in the minimal-techno place for a bit too long, but for me it was actually nice to get some fresh air at that point, and overall his set was fantastic. Those anthems at the end were just fucking great.

My one complaint about the whole night would have to be the closing-DJ; I've got no clue what he was thinking, but I sure as hell didn't appreciate it.

Glad to hear you had a good time in Berlin, even if I would have preferred you to be in Manchester

Posted by Thirsty on Sep-12-2012 17:07:

Was a good night. He played a few songs I did not know. I also thought he extended too much on some parts, but the classic tunes like netherworld and lost vagueness really made it worth it. Also when i was there he played something that sounded like "John O'Callaghan - Stresstest (John Askew Remix)" which suprised me. It turns out it was " ambbassador- the fade oliver lieb mix ". They sound quite similar, still a good song

If someone finds a tracklist for his mix, post a link here plx.
