Monkey Dancer 2 Hamid - Rhododendron [Oldskool trance for black people]

Here's finally my oldskool trance mix with tracks from the early years of the genre. I've always wanted to make a mix with tracks from the golden years. I think i first mentioned plans for this mix like 3 years ago (right Spaniard? ) All tracks are ranging from 1992 to 1995 with stuff from great labels such as Rising High Records, Noom, R&S and some more obscure ones. One thing is for sure. Tracks from the early 90s is a bitch to mix. So yeah don't expect wonders, but I still hope I got the flow right.
All comments are welcome! Enjoy the ride!
If anyone knows a good place to host the mix I would be thankful. Cheers!

01. Influx - Dreamscape

Haha, sweet man, better late than never. Great timing too as I was just looking for new music to put on the mp3 player. Gonna give this one a run and post a review by the end of the week.

Thanks! Hope you like it.

I thought I'd write a little about every track.

01: Influx - Dreamscape
Released in 1993 on Sapho, sublabel of Rising High Records. The guy behind Influx is the amazing ambient producer James Bernard, who is more famous for his ambient productions.

02: Quadripart - Joy
Released in 1994 on the dutch label Hyper Hype. On the same release is also a Lemon8 remix.

03: Traumatic - Tribal Symphony
Released in 1994 on Noom Records, on the Higher EP. Noom released lots of banging acid trance in the early 90s. This one is an exception. Ayla actually released a 2011 cover of this last year.

04: Ulysses - Dream N Trance
Released in 1993 on Noom Records. This was one of the first releases on Noom. The guy behind the project is Ramin/Afrotrance who released tons of trance on various labels in the early 90s, such as Harthouse, Risin g High etc.

05: Surge - Transistory Charm
Surge is a Bristol-based brother duo of Andy and Dave Bell. Transistory Charm was produced in 1994 but due to problems with labels the album wasn't released until 1996.

06: Syzygy - Can I Dream?
Released in 1994 on Rising High Records. Syzygy were mainly ambient producers but also put out a few trance gems.

07: Beyond Religion - Project Janus
Released in 1992 on the obscure and short lived English label Beyond Religion Records. Beyond Religion is a quite forgotten act from the early 90s. They released a few records on their safe titled label but then vanished.

08: Cherrymoon Trax II - Plastic Body Liquid Mind
Released 1994 on Bonzai Records. Produced by Axel Stephenson who had his hands in quite a few great records from Bonzai. This track is also a forgotten one mainly due to that the A-side, Let There be house stole the show.

09: Yakari - Helix Wave
Released in 1994 on the Swedish based Loop Records. The guy behind Yakari is no other than the techno legend Cari Lekebusch. Before trance became a dirty word a numbers of Swedish techno and house producers also released trance records (such as Axwell, check out his OXL tracks).

10: Aeon - Terminus
Released in 1995 on Ninetysix Sounds. Very shortlived project by the guy who later went on to form the trance project Nuclear Ramjet.

11: Source - Mental Resurrection
Released in 1992 on Ohm, a small Swedish underground label which showcased Swedish underground techno and trance producers. Source is Robert Leiner, aka The Source Project. I always loved how his productions always sounded so ahead of their time. I also love how much bass and rhythm he puts into his tracks.

12: Source - Release It
Released in 1993 on the belgian label R & S Records, a label who's been active for more than 20 years now. Robert Leiner released most of his stuff on R & S and Release It is taken from his amazing Organized Noises album. Also check out his other two albums from the same label Robert Leiner ‎ Visions Of The Past and The Source Experience - Different Journeys.

13: Seofon - The Joyning
Released in 1994 on Visible Records. Seofon is an ambient and IDM producer. The Joyning is taken from his Access EP. A great EP with nice songs.

Dream.... Within a Dream.

Top notch stuff in here. This is going to get repeated on the level of Stockholm Syndrome

Also thanks for posting the history behind some of these tracks / old labels. I had almost no knowledge of this time period before.

I've listened to this twice now, and I didn't enjoy it that much, to be honest. Most of the tracks were good, but I didn't really like the way they were put together. I know these old tracks are very tough to mix, but you make mistakes which have nothing to do with that. Take the transition into Tribal Symphony: the transition is one beat out of synch, which is why it's clapping on every beat and goes into the breakdown one beat later than it should. That's just a basic error. You also obviously don't put much thought into harmonic mixing. The key clashes were particularly distracting early on in the mix when there's no energy and you're basically just building atmosphere.

I can forgive ropey mixing if the flow remains good, but I just do not understand the flow of this mix. The first half drifts past without really building any kind of momentum, and while I enjoyed the spacey vibes of tracks like Can I Dream, I was wondering if the mix was ever actually going to build up to something. At about 38 minutes the Beyond Religion track finally begins to add some energy to the mix with that meaty bassline, only for you to immediately kill the energy off with the next track. We meander around for a while more, and then you do it again with Aeon - Terminus. Once more it feels like the mix is belatedly going up a gear, but you follow it with a very mellow, almost Detroit techno, track which brings it right back down. Why?

Again, the tracks were nice. I hadn't heard of any of them before so credit for the crate digging, but given you put out mixes so rarely and apparently have been planning this one for three years, I would expect much more thought to have gone into it.

I was still listening to Jarre (I know...) and Tangerine Dream in the early nineties, wasn't aware of trance at all at the time so I really appreciate mixes like this that give you a glimpse.

None of the tracks are standing out hugely on the first listen but it's hugely interesting catching the genesis of trance music like this. Thanks for digging and uploading.

As someone who first got into trance in the '97-98 years (though nowadays I'm more of a house guy), it's nice to go back and hear some of the older, lesser-known songs... I can see how a lot of elements in the mix are almost like a prototype to the mid 2000's progressive trance. Very good, and I liked the name/cover art too.

Posted by rdevito on Jul-18-2012 18:31:

First of all i have to tell you that Stockholm Syndrome is one of my favorite mixes here on TA, so i had a high expectation for this mix.

Now to the point:

Overall, good set. Pretty good track selection with a decent flow, and i really liked the tracks at the end. However the mixing itself was not your best work.

My major points are: the transition between Tribal Symphony and Dream N Trance is way out of key, and there were one or 2 more transitions with this same problem; Transition between Project Janus and Plastic Body Liquid Mind is very weird, it's not properly synced and seems (at least to me) you faded away too fast Project Janus.

To be honest, when i listen to a classic mix i usually don't give too much importance to the technical side of it, basically because i simply don't know this tracks and it's always a pleasure to listen to this stuff. But the difference between a default and remarkable mix is the way you put the tracks right? And since you wanted a feedback i felt free to write my opinion.

That being said, i'm waiting for you next mix

Good set, I also see with your timing right after I posted my mix! Definitely my kind of trance. My favourite era was 1988-1996. Then 1997-2001 and 2002-2005. What I liked the most is that about 4 or 5 of the tracks in this set I haven't heard before. Not particularly a fan of Lekebusch or Leiner, flow wasn't an issue with me, and I am not in the position of criticizing the mixing since I suck at it myself but genres like this are very hard to mix because often the tracks weren't made to be mixed on the dancefloor, no beat-in or beat-out often times.

Note: that Ulysses track is great and has been for a while on my regular Classic Trance 1988-1996 playlist and I was thinking of using it at one of my later Ambient Trance mixes

Solid mix Hamid! I see what you are saying about mixing those older tracks and it's impossible to fault you on that. I think it might be missing an extra bit of spark in the middle to cary it towards the end, however it never really goes off path. The Ulysses track takes it for me in terms of individual tracks, just such a stormer!

BTW, I think I recommended some stuff for you when you said you were doing the mix. I can't remember what I sent you, did you end up using anything?

Cheers

Interesting mix here. I do have to echo Jack in being slightly confused by the flow. While I didn't find it quite as terrible as him, it definitely wasn't your best. The mixing also left a bit to wish for. The tracks themselves, however, were phenomenal. Hadn't heard most of these before, so props for the work hunting them down. You most definitely know your stuff, mate.

I'll definitely give it more listens - the tracks are so great - but next time maybe spend a bit more work on the delivery

Posted by InnerReflection on Oct-22-2012 08:07:

Some really really good tracks most definitely. Rather nice selection.

In terms of flow... it's not really an issue for me with this mix. There's no jarring bits or anything, and some bits have an interesting flow/energy/atmosphere going with them. It's more of an area that could use improvement. With a bit more time put into the flow this could definitely be a powerful journey especially with such amazing tracks. The usual advice like sometimes you have a track you really want to put in but it just won't fit anywhere flow wise so you just have to drop it for flow's sake applies.

Overall quite good mix though. I quite enjoyed future retro revolution as well. I'm very impressed with your track selection and knowledge of those sortof styles from that era.

Thanks for your comments!
I'm actually working on a follow up to Future retro revolution.
