New Mac user.. why buy Logic Pro when Garageband does almost the same?!

Hi,

Short intro: Have been using Cubase on PC long time so I know a bit about DAWs.. recently got my first iMAC which comes with the latest Garageband '11.

Initally I thought Garageband '11 would be very basic.. but it seems it can do pretty much everything.. you can load any 3th-party instrument and effect, seems to automate everything etc..

So, why would one still buy Logic Pro then? Can you please list the most important advantages it has over Garageband? Thanks alot!

I think Garageband is designed to help lay down your ideas fast, in the other hand Logic is a proper DAW, think at garage like at a little demo of the Logic.

I know Logic is a complete DAW like Cubase which I used for years..

I am mainly asking if people here using Logic can list the most important advantages it has over Garageband.. seems Garageband is very full-featured, like you can load any 3th party instrument and effects in the slots per track, automate everything, etc..

Thanks!

isnt garageband limited to three instruments, 8 channels, two sends, and other limitations? or was that logic express back in v8?

garage band is for boys

logic pro is for men

that is the difference

Yeah, but you NEED the ability to load of 4st party-plugins for if you want to render to 44-1 wav. If you hand over an mp3 to a label they will laugh at you.

It's all about practicality. How long have you been working on Cubase, or music in a software environment? I would say only spend a year or 2 on the basic tier of something like Garage Band, which may actually be yery helpful to get you started in a DAW environment in the beginning. After a certain point, eg. whenever you understand the basics of the common effects (chorus, reverb, eq, delay, etc) and know how to get them working together, composing, basic arrangement and songwriting, I wouldn't sit around and wait to see if you can push Garage Band to its limits when you can be more comfortable in something like Logic or Ableton.

well to me im having a hard time learning logic proper as i dont have enough time in front of my computer so would like to try something more instant. but as a former Reason user, and getting pretty annoyd of reasons limitations i guess im stuck. considering reaper also, i really just need a simple VA AU and a sampler/drummachine pluss lots of efex.

sell that POS mac you have, and spend the money on a state-of-art computer with Live. Faster, more stable plus you'll have enough cash to get drunk 3 or 4 times. Win/win/win/win/win situation.
