I'd like to talk about analogue

I haz been looking me at some little synths. I feel some collection to happen.

I'm not talking about the old stuff or the bigger ones, but all the cool little ones.

So far :-

Oberheim SEM (liking this a lot)
Arturia Minibrute (bit meh on the sound so far though)
Doepfer Dark Energy
Tetra
Waldorf Pulse 2
Mono Evolver

Are there any other cool little knob tweakers that I might not know about yet?


And don't talk to me about the A-100 stuff. That is a scratch I shall itch next year.

vermona mono lancet

its not a synth but Sherman filterbank is really cool and very analogue. Definitely a knob tweaker too

The waldorf pulse 1 is a dirty little beast imo not tried the new version

Actually the filterbank is a pretty good shout, although a couple of the little synths I've been looking at can process external audio so I'm not sure if i'd be doubling up.

The Pulse 2 should be pretty good though, although I have no idea why they insist on using that multi function UI. Gah!

I haven't decided between the minitaur and mini brute.

Neither of those are floating my boat at the moment.

I've just found out about the Studio Electronics Boomstar, which comes in 4 filter flavours.

I'm seriously looking forward to hearing the SEM version.

i bought a few analogue things when i was trying to make DnB - for bass and bass processing. The Sherman was definitely the most "analogue" sounding of them all! its noisy, unpredictable and sometimes it even sounds like a reverb. Mostly good for distortion.

Studio electronics stuff looks blinding, bit pricey though but id love to try some of that stuff one day

Their UK distributor is Studio Xchange up in North London, so I think once they have the Boomstar in stock I'll go and have a play.

I've got to mini beasts.

The kick lancet which is ok but tbh I need some good outboard pre-amp to record it through as I don't get great results using my RME interface. It also doesn't do much.

Secondly I have the rack version of Leipzig by Analogoue Solutions, which is a classic monosynth.

It's fat and fun, but I'd say overall a bit dissapointing. Wish I'd gone for something with more sonic routing possibility.
Again I could use a decnet pre or something to record it through.

A producer I recently met, actually uses shitty little bits of circuitry from part of an old camcorder as his preamp, and it's actually really effective. I have old bits of amplifiers and so on so I might try this - I originaly started in electronic music by circuit bending anyway so it would be fun.

I do think there's some secret sauce in connecting these things together, and ultimately having more than one flavour to play with Rich.

I don't think i'll ever be a fan of the full modular world as it just seems like a faff to me, but some kind of interconnection would be cool.

I know I said I wasn't talking about the bigger synths, but I happened upon this relatively recent Andromeda video.

just picked up a dsi evolver. Highly recommend this one. Cheap and the feedback distortion sounds great. This is the sort of stuff software still doesn't really do well. More so than the tetra which i found quirky but just kinda of blaze. The evolver is totally rock and roll tho.

It's weird it doesn't get much love. Almost every demo I've seen of it looks awesome.

I suspect people aren't getting it's hybrid nature and are not really delving into what it can do.

not sure to be honest. All i know is that the type of self ossilation/feedback is the one thing I tend to look for when getting hardware synths because i don't really care for the control. I find software can do pretty much the other stuff perhaps not as good but once you've made your mix unnoticeable.

Also, not related by check out that juno 60 emu. TAL 2 ? Sounds great. Like just the init setting and play in the bass range and i was like damn.

Yeah I do like all the TAL stuff.

The one that's still getting me at the moment is Diva. I'm just finishing off the last Sylenth bank and I'll start on that or maybe Zebra next. Dunno yet.

I've also been looking at the Doepfer modular stuff. Not so much as a self contained unit, but to hook up someething like the Oberheim SEM to, or perhaps the Minibrute.

Apparently the Minibrute can sound a lot nicer than all the metallic demos would have you believe.

it is impossible to find one. They are like backlogged.

I'm in no rush. By the time I buy it Ebay will be flooded with them from people who bought them thinking it would make them sound analogue.

sometimes i feel bad. Like the guy i bought the evolver from was straight up broke selling his stuff because he felt he was too old and he needed money because he lost his job. But at least i didn't lowball him. I hate that feeling tho.

Can you give some more detail in to this if you can? Im very fascinated with distortion and dicks, mostly dicks though.

well its the way you can add distortion so that it feels more natural rather than slapping a plugin on. Like you can go from none and then you get this feedback loop that increases and that is something software just can't do well if at all.Basically using distortion and feedback in a way that is not static.

Would it be able to make these sorts of tones?

I'm after a replacment for my Leipzig as it doesn't have enough sonic possibility. Somthing for about $650.

I realise this example has fx applied.
