How do the clubs do it?

How does one go about compiling a tracklisting? I suggested to the promoters of a club night that I would happily sit/stand behind the DJ and write down the tracks as they were played, that way ensuring an acurate record for the night. Is there an easier way of doing it? How do the pros do it?
