giant vs insomniac
as someone posted digweed is playing exchange, and most likely due to festival contract tie-ins. Is this to be expected as the norm from here on out for the more popular dj's?
Next week avalon has dj dan and you can get $10 tickets which indicates they are aware that their "product" that night(no disrespect to dan) isnt up to snuff. manufactured superstars the following week(ok u guys own beatport, you get booked) and then erick morillo on the 27th and they are bringing him back dec 1. i take this as a sign that giant is in trouble if they have to recycle their main guys in a span of 5 weeks?
i was at exchange last saturday and really liked it. the view from upstairs is awesome and it was great that they regulated who was able to get up there. no washers and a lot of pretty ladies. only dislike was closing time, but im not one to rage until the sun comes out.
more competition the better for us. Giants been recycling same talent past 2yrs
Digweed has always seemed to play all over the place. I don't think his ties to Avalon have anything to do with Giant. I like Exchange but I'm not sure about Digweed there. I don't like DJ Dan but I think he will pack Avalon. And if you could book Morillo every five weeks, I'm sure you would. That has to be a cash cow with the bottle service crowd etc.
Regardless, we will be at Jon O'Bir at Circus
The $10 Avalon tickets next week may be because originally they had scheduled Edward Maya, not sure why this was cancelled, and DJ Dan is a last minute book.
Digweed has been playing for years for Liquified and Giant here in LA... on a normal tour i'm sure they get 1st chance to book him. but as noted by others it appears that Insomniac has made some package deals with djs to play both their festivals as well as LA shows so that seems to be what happened here. Another possibility is that Avalon already had someone booked for that night so they passed on the booking... but i think the 1st theory is more likely.
Pure speculation on my part but with their split with Disco Donnie i'm guessing Insomniac is trying to make up for that revenue loss by their partnerships here with Exchange and Sutra.
I can't remember the last time I went to a Giant event. It has pretty much washed out IMO.
I respect Giant for having a consistent rager every weekend at Avalon. That being said, they do cater to a bit of an old-school crowd. They don't seem to try too hard to book the big new acts, even though I have a feeling they could if they really wanted to. The scene there matches that - more people on drugs (compared to Exchange/Playhouse), washers, older crowd, etc.
So I think Insomniac is doing the mainstream thing, Giant is staying a little underground. And with underground, you sometimes have prices drop. But Exchange isn't that pricey either.
It's not even an Insomniac vs Giant. We all know how the Exchange was before Insomniac, and that Avalon was doing just fine before Giant joined them.

to give credit where its due.. Giant did bring the party to Avalon .. they just left and came back..
Giant also did bring the party to Circus too.. and Vanguard..
times are changing.. the partiers of long ago are in their late 30s..40s and 50s+ so the dynamic is changing..
there was always a great divide among 21+ and non 21+ ..Giant/Spundae took care of the 21+ events and Insomniac/GoVentures/B3Cande (remember them? lol) took care of the under 21 crowd...
now it seems it's all mishmashed together.. and Insomniac's got it all covered..for now.

Avalon had an in-house talent booker at the time. Liquified, Spundae (YAY!) and Saturday Night Sessions (Go Ventures) all helped out with the promotions. I believe GV only assisted once a month.
Liquified helped with some of the talent booking too.

Dave Dean does most of Pasqualle's bookings. Maybe not so much anymore, but the year insomniac starting booking the big guys is the year they teamed up with giant.
ever since giant cancelled nye, they have really been doing more behind the scenes than anything else.

I am the source. I used to work with these guys... Like I said, maybe not so much anymore but DD def did bookings for Pasqual. They are all close friends and business partners.
may i ask what you did for them?
worked WITH not for. I know all these people from back in the day. I used to produce events and when I did, our staff & friends had a lot of crossover.
a lot has changed over the years.
what events did you produce? just interested... not trying to troll or anything.
A lot of us had roles in the scene and have since retired such as myself. i still party like a mofo though... but only when the wife says i have to finish the dishes first.
