Ranch Dressing

what's the history behind this amazing product? what defined the flavor "ranch"? and how different is modern day ranch versus when it was originally invented/discovered/etc...

also, who thought to pair ranch and bacon? why was it decided that pig fat (fried) on top of buttermilk complex would be good? not saying it was a bad discovery, because it's amazing.....but why?

also why is Cool Ranch Doritos nothing like Ranch Dressing?

'Ranch' is actually a rather prescient designation, as it foresees a time when corpulent Americans will in fact be a form of livestock put out to pasture for their stem cell harvesting qualities.

I prefer franch.

In 1954, Steve and Gayle Henson opened Hidden Valley Ranch, a dude ranch near Santa Barbara, California. They served guests a dressing that Steve had developed. The dressing was popular, and they began selling bottles that guests could take home, and later opened a factory to sell packets of ranch seasoning that had to be mixed with mayonnaise and buttermilk (packets that are still available to this day). In 1972, the brand was bought by Clorox for $8 million.

Also, I've moved on from Hidden Valley bottles into their ranch seasoning packets. 1 cup of non-fat yogurt, 1 cup of low fat mayo, 1 packet of hidden valley ranch seasoning, salt, pepper, garlic salt, maybe a tiny splash of water to help out the blender. You get a much much lower calorie/fat ranch dressing and I personally think it tastes a little better.

It's better than Blue Cheese.

Not better than Caesar, though.

That reminds me, has anyone pulled the prank of putting their jizz into a shampoo bottle?

I always thought of it as a thrifty way to stretch your shampoo a little further than a prank.

I read from somebody on here to put a little bit of ranch when you're scrambling eggs. Been doing that lately with some grated cheddar, and the eggs come out amazing. As long as you don't put too much, you'll have a very subtle taste that goes rather well.

Oh yeah, and I also do a mix of ranch and Tapatio (Mexican tabasco) together and use it as a dipping sauce for pizza rolls. So good.

Incidentally, this popped up in my YT feed today, so I thought I'd might post it here. Chef John is awesome.
