Vestax or DJM ?!

ok its time i upgraded my mixer... thing is in aus the pcv 275 is about 1200 and the djm-500 is about 1300 - 1400 so i was wondering with these prices would you guys reccomend just splashing out the extra dosh and getting the 500? (im not really intrested in the 600 with sampler/extra effects, btw is that the only diff between em?) cause 500 seems pretty decent like the 600 but without that extra crap il hardly use anyway... but is it worth it? or vestax all the way? thanx guys
ps. i realise we get these debates every thread! but i just wanted some quick opinions and facts technicaly wise...

hmmm I would go for the 500 since it has more channels and effects and so on.....the 275 is simply in a lower league (compare with fe. djm-300 and so on)

Posted by eran on Sep-15-2002 12:48:

I suggest you go with the 500.

I own one, and have played with the 275 a couple of times, and the 500 seems to be much more comfort and fun to work with..

I also believe its build and sound quality are better than the 275, but I have no proof for that.

Adding to that you get 4 channels, and the effects which might come handy once in a while..

the difference between the 500 and 600 is the sampler, cue-to-live fader for the headphones, i think greater eq control on the 600 for the lowering of frequencies, pretty silver finish, and someone i know who tried both seemed to think the sound quality on the 600 was better, but i don't know if this is true, i haven't heared them both together myself.

The 275's fader will probably last you longer than the pioneer's fader. Vestax are also supposed to have better sound quality, but ditto with above, I don't know this for sure.

They're both great mixers, i guess it just depends on whether or not you want a built in sampler/effects. You can always get a 275 and then get an external effects unit, which would probably be of greater quality than the fx in the 500 and 600. They're nothing too special, not that they're not fun to play with.

If people are recommending the 500 over the vestax, I'd say just spend the extra money and get the 600, if you have the cash that is You can go to www.pioneerprodj.com and look at the comparison charts for the mixers, I'm not going to go through it again. Look for other threads here in the end of this forum. Many people, inculding me have written detailed explainations of the differences, and in short, I and several other djs here think that the differences are worth it. I promise you that if you get a 600 and then go use a 500 later on, you will NEVER regret getting the 600. The 600 has some increadible convineince features that the 500 doesn't have and it it very much worth the extra money if you have it. If you don't, consider holding off a few extra months until you can.

imho vestax quality is much better then the djm serious
i think u should save ur 100 bucks for vinyls and go with the 275
it r0x...

I'd consider getting the 275 and then getting an external fx unit later on if you want one. I didn't realise that the 275 was so cheap.

quite simple really, save a bit extra cash buy the 600.

You'll be a happy guy if u do

I love my 275! But I haven't really tried the Pioneer one, so this was a pretty useless post

The difference between the DJM-500 and 600 is larger than people think:

*Eq on 500 is -20 and on 600 -26db
*The eq is also not as accurate on the 500 than the 600, if you look at the khz they cut at, the 600 has the standard khz rating
*500 has no record output which can be annoying
*600 has less redundant inputs and outputs than the 500
*600 has sampler and i think 2 extra effects (?)
*600 has the little "crossfader" knob and is VERY useful.. you can adjust the volume of each when heard together if you know what i mean
*500 doesnt have crossfader curves which do come useful on the 600

Anyway.. the extra $200 or so is definately worth it for the DJM-500 over the PCV-275
But some people who have the PCV series say that the eq. knobs are a bit close together and quite small.. though i guess you would get use to them after a while.

In my group of friends, 2 of us have DJM-500's (me included) which we both payed $1500 for at the DJ Factory. One of my other friends said that it was $970 new at Kosmic Sound.. but i'm not so sure about that crazy quote.. but if you do get the 500, go there and you can easily bargain with the guy there (Brian). You should be able to get a lower price than the DJ Factory.

Another friend also has the PCV-175 which is quite similar to the 275 except for the extra inputs, isolators, eq. hearing in monitoring, and a few other things i have missed out. It's quite a good mixer and sound quality definately doesnt lack. The kills also come very useful. But so do the effects on the DJM-500...

But after all this i would still stick to my DJM-500.. which you should also do..

The Pioneer DJM-500 and the PCV-275 are both quality mixers, bit in my opinion you should save the cash, & get the PCV-275 and a Korg Kaoss Pad2, and use that as ur FX unit. That would be damn good....

ok guys i think we need to keep our mixer questions confined to one thread

Posted by Dewi on Sep-20-2002 23:46:

I reckon your actually much better off with a Vestax 275 and a Korg Kaoss pad Rather than a DJM500, Vestax mixers do seem to have a better sound quality than the Pioneers, they sound more Atmospheric or sommat! cant explain it!

But this would totally depend on how much channels u need, if 3 is enough for you then save your cash and get the 275 and mebbe a Kaoss pad, cos that way imo u have a much better set-up, the Kaoss pad will do much more than the inbulilt efx unit on the DJM500. If ur needeing more channels and a slightly more industrial mixer in terms of inputs of such things as Main Speakers control and monitor control etc then go with the DJM.

Conclusion tho...For home use....GO WITH THE VESTAX 275! Makes a lot mroe sense!

this is what i suggest.. i've used both mixers that you are thinking about.. to tell you the truth i'd rather go w/ the djm600 over the 500.. and the 500 over the vestax.. but you really need to go use both and pick the one that you would prefer. I like the pioneer because i've had extensive use of the djm600 because a guy in my crew has one and i think its the shit.. i was going to get the djm3000 because i was in search of a 19" mixer and i love the pioneers.. so if u do decide on the pioneer, might as well get the 600 because i think its better than the 500.. don't get me wrong, the 500 is a superb mixer, actually the only time i've used it was tonight at a club i spun at, and i didn't really get to play w/ the effects too much because i didn't want to mess w/ it live.. but i did notice that it didn't have a sampler and it was missing 2 effects, i can't remember the names but i remember there is way more options, plus i don't think i saw an effects volume control on the 500 that exists on the 600 but i may just not have been looking for it.. so back to my reasoning.. i used the vestax mixer at this guys house for about 3hrs and i've also used the vestax model that is just below the 275 and i just didn't like it that much. it seems really stiff (could be good construction but all the knobs and faders just seem like they need to have a little more grease or oil in them..too much resistance for my taste), and i encounter this on all vestaxes.. sound is good through the vestax so i don't think u will run into sound quality issues, but i am just used to the layout and feel of the pioneer and i think its better, bigger knobs and faders, i also believe that the EQ's do a better job of seperating the frequencies on the pioneer, for some reason i felt like the eq's are just not that accurate on the vestax but again thats personal opinion, and yes i did notice that on the 500 i used today, the eq's were not as clean as the 600 but i just attributed that to it being used as a club mixer so it must have taken extensive abuse, but now that we were shown that the 500 eq's are not as precise as the 600, this makes more sense. you might want to compare the stats on eq precision because personal opinion is personal, cold hard facts can be useful as proof because personal opinions are based on experience and you need to experience things for yourself. bottom line, u won't be dissappointed w/ either, im just biased to the pioneer because i'm so used to it and i don't really like the feel or control that I get w/ the vestax, however i know dj's that swear by vestax so i really suggest to go play w/ both.

Two days ago i bought a 600. This store was trying to charge me 1300 for it but i talked them down to $1050 flat (us) i'm glad to say it was well worth the investment. going from a numark to this is like another world. I have to agree that the 600 does a very nice job of filtering out certain frequiences with the eq. Well worth the money. But as people have been saying it comes down to personal taste and feel of ones mixer. Try em out and see waht you like.

Posted by Scorchio on Sep-23-2002 16:51:

Theres not even the slightest argument here.
Vestax all the way, the sound quality is way better...

Posted by CrackedLcd on Sep-23-2002 20:27:

Personally I don't like the pioneer djm series. Not saying that they are terrible mixers. I just like the quality of vestax mixer over them. I would go for a vestax.

Ok then, I have a question about the difference between the PCV 275 and the PMC-05 ProII. What are the main differences? Effects? Kills? And if I wanted to hook 2 tables and a cd mixer to it, could I? Any input is appreciated. Thanks- Greg
