What's the difference?

hey guys I never really got to understand the difference between melodic trance and uplifting trance, I am having trouble distinguishing if songs are melodic or uplifting and if you would be kind enough as to point the differences

Dancing Dude

i no this is the opposite of uplifting, but i always though it was more of a ''sad'' tune eg.

william orbit - barbers adaigo for strings (ferry corsten remix)
fire & ice - souvineer de chine

thats what i would class as 'uplifting', but melodic is the rest of trance wich isn't prog, hard trance breaks etc.

id say uplifting would have more synths in the tune.

Melodic would have more melodies.

In my opinion 'Melodic' trance is stuff like Sunday Club, Qattara, Lost Tribe, Chicane, Trouser Enthusiasts, Space Brothers and the likes. It's similar to 'uplifting' but it's usually got more of a mellow feel and doesn't have as huge a climax and most tracks are usually longer in length. It usually has a lot of piano and has a large amount of female vocals.

That's my classification, feel free to disagree.

If you really think about what the terms mean you'll see there was originally no difference between the two. Uplifting trance is mentioned frequently on here. Uplifting meaning it energizes you and (theoretically) makes you feel good. Of course, what is it that usually produces these feelings? The melodies. Thus it seems that melodic trance is of a similar genre... of course they're both just words to describe varying types of music so I'd say whatever lets you best capture the essence of the track is fair game. Personally I prefer the term melodic though.

i think theyre the same IMO. i mean.. the uplifting part of a tune is pretty much the melody, isnt it?
