Question

im currently djing.. and in high school
but im thinking of goin into production for the future
so i was wonderin if anyone can give me a little info about it?
like.. what does it involve in you doing? what exactly is remixing a song? and how to get started.. equipment costs..stuff like that
also is it hard to become big?

production is simply creating lots of different sounds and then, by using a sequencer, bringing them all together to create a song.

for example, you might create a beat. Then make a bass line, then some percussion, and then some melody. You then use a sequencer to bring all the sounds together so that they form a song.

Remixing is really the same as production, only that you use the sounds from someone else's track along with your own to create a different version of that song. So, for example, you may take the melody and vocals off another song and then use your own beats, basslines and percussion to create another song. The "remixed" version you have created will sound similar to the original because it contain the same voacals and trancy melody, yet it is different becasue it has been aranged differently and contains some different sounds.

That is a very basic answer, as remixing a song can result in a completely different version, for example Angel of Death - Angel of Death Tracid mix sounds completely different to the Hennes & Cold mix, but basically, this is what you are doing.

Production can take years for you to be able to do it at a professional level, and it also takes a lot of money. Hardware like synthesisers are very expensive and a good professional will a have a dew of them in order to be able to make a wide variety of sounds.

A good studio can cost thousands, and i mean tens of thousands of dollars.

Start off with software. Something like Reason, by propellerhead software is pretty much an entire studio package in one and lets you use your computer as a studio. You won't get the same quality, but its damn good, and a good place to start. You can use reason to sequence your tracks, but something like Cubase VST or Logic Platinum (for mac) is a high quality professional sequencer. Or Acid Pro by sonic foundry is something a little simpler and easy to use

Yeah, U can get real professional (read GOOD) sounds out from softwares, if U know what U are doing... So learning by doing is the best way At least I think so. Real harware synths may sound a bit better, but then again U really need to know what U are doing with them...
