Favorite Venues in LA

Okie Dokie. Just checking to see what everyone's favorite venue is in LA at the moment. What venues have you had fun partying at this year. Supposedly, there are going to be a lot of changes in 2013 so I'm curious as what venues you've preferred in 2012.

Personally.... I had a really good time at the Paladium for Prydz but other than that, wasn't too impressed with any other venue.

Thoughts?

Prydz was definitely a highlight for the year, but i'd have to say EXLA would be my favorite spot for 2012. Insomniac has brought awesome dj's to EXLA and getting comp'd half the time doesn't hurt so i've had a fucking blast there this year. Gotta love that they go past 2am also!

palladium is always a good venue, seems like they figured out how to tune the speakers the last few times i've been there as well, which is a nice change. exchange has a great layout (love the downstairs), but the sound is just deafening there, even with earplugs. still love avalon ... yeah, you have to deal with the washers but they're no worse than the shufflenoob crowd that you'll find anywhere else.

other than that, not impressed by any other venues recently, but i wonder if the change in management at vanguard will bear positive results?

Exchange LA, Dim Mak, and Los Globos.

You could say that again!

Sounds like a combination now, hopefully everyone is going the same direction.

I think in its prime Vanguard beside the OLD Circus (before the wall opened) was pretty awesome.

which wall opened?

The wall that used to exist in the main room. Stairs are to the right of the main DJ booth used to be against a wall. That wall went all the way to the back. They opened it up to reveal the huge room next to it...killed vibe, acoustics, pretty much everything for most nights.

They should've made it a whole different room, if anything. But more importantly, Circus just needs a full makeover. But this has been known for years and years now and we've given up begging for it.

Dim mak eats a million dicks that venue is the worst I've been to anywhere.
I checked out a couple parties at Los Globos this year and it never really disappointed.
Only did EXLA once and I definitely saw the appeal of the venue, but not very many parties there have much appeal for me anymore.

Who did you see at Dim Mak? I went there once to see Chris Liebing and it was great, the vibe and crowd were friendly and so were the bartenders. Maybe it depends on who you see playing there.

Been there 6 or 7 times this year.
Did the CLR party there too.

Wow. What was the thought process behind this?

Circus is a gay night club on the other nights of the week. Probably one of the biggest gay night clubs in the country. The owner expanded the venue in order to allow more people to purchase tickets. The crowd that normally goes to Circus on firdays doesn't really care about acoustics, lighting or who is djing. they just go there b/c it's the spot. The owner decided, "if i make more room, i can make more money", which he pretty much is doing.

Circus is still one of my favorite clubs but mostly for the memories (non-gay nights of course).

Agreed.

Good to get the history. I used to go to Circus back in the old days before that wall was knocked down and haven't been back since. I always wondered why they did that because it seemed like that was the beginning of the fall of Circus as a trance party venue. I've heard of it making a comeback a few times but with LMD leaving, it's not looking good for non-gay parties.

Maybe you guys know more but my impression was that Circus died because Spundae left, not because Circus doubled in size. Spundae could have easily filled the bigger space with the DJs it was bringing; if anything it wouldn't be so packed and have 45 minute + wait times to get in.

agreed. The bookings became more difficult to handle. Trying to complete with Avalon and the newly renovated Vanguard after Giant had just moved there made it tough.

I do hope that some day, Spundae moves back to Circus AFTER some tweaks to the venue (sound, lighting, etc...)

edit* what also helped to pack the venue was all the support from local DJ's/Crews.

Some good mutha fucking times yo!! I was younger and much skinnier

Circus and the Palladium.

The Palladium and Circus

...and after the Palladium is demolished to build yet more luxury condos, we'll have:

Circus

i really like avalon, perfect big room venue and can easily turn into a gritty after hours scene.

palladium is a cool venue too but the sound for armin was horrendous, so it loses it's top spot.
