I don't like Roxy

It's not because of the layout or the cheesiness, the lack of vibe or the half dressed 16 year old girls running around (I recognize that some of these things are appealing to others). It's because the sound sucks. I have only been there twice, both times since they installed their $300,000 Phazon and it is horribly disapointing.

I am not usually one to bitch about clubs (excluding exit) but the sound at the roxy concerns me because i plan on giving them a lot of my money in the next few months to see some world class djs. and i will be very disappointed if i go to see great talent only to have their sets obscured by the washed out sound in the roxy.

this is just a recurring thought i've been having but it is causing me to consider driving to baltimore to see sasha again because i want to hear him on a good system.

is anyone else concerned about this or i am just being silly?

Your being SILLY
No your right, Its ridiculous how a top dj like Edgar V would be told to stop after spinning for 30 min Hopefully things will change for the better

would they or could they tune the sound sytem if they wanted?

i dont think it is possible...then again i am no certified phazon installer but i think i remember reading on it. something having to do with the dimensions of the club for it to be fully optimized. idk-roxy is way too big imho.

Posted by Porky on Sep-16-2002 04:48:

Love hmmm...

so it's a tradeoff i guess. for a bigger venue you can pack in more people, but the sound system will be diluted.

i dnon't know how big the roxy is (never been) but the Guvernent in Toronto (which has the phazon installed) is huge and cavernous and the phazon just sounds absolutely sublime over there..

maybe the roxy owners need to tweak their phazon system!

Pork!

How is Roxy's Phazon compared to Exit's or SF's sound system? I was verry satisfied with Phazon at ARC.

arc is undoubtedly one of the best sounding clubs in nyc. its pretty bad for exit, they are promoting on ktu. bleH~ another rant...idk if im behind on the radio listening but i yesterday 4strings-into the night was playing on ktu!!!! wtF ahhhh

Posted by butterfly on Sep-16-2002 15:59:

why the sound is bad

phazon is a great system but it is not designed for a small space. the sound needs to resonate off the walls of the club to sound right and it can't do that at roxy cause the speakers are in the middle of the room. arc has the perfect space for this desgin.

i hope they can tweak it but this is a fundamental design problem that they can't fix. i hear the sound is better than it was before the phazon but I had much higher expectations for the amount of money that they spent.

i do think it is better than exits system (which is not too great) from the perspective that the bass is very good at roxy (no ear ringing). there also is not a lot of distortion in the sound at roxy but what good does that do if all the mids and his are getting lost in the room?

No, your not being silly at all.. the sound at Roxy SUX, like i said on the scott bond review, there is no treble there.. it just sounds muffled and shit.. if it stays like that, im gonna be pissed when pvd comes....shit i dont care if Arc is "too small for pvd" i would die to hear paul's set on Arc's soundsystem....i dont know, i just hope roxy dont become another commercialized "super club" but i have a feeling its already leaning towards that direction

Art chip in some money to make Glows sound better

Posted by arturob on Sep-16-2002 17:46:

hi,

I didn`t like Guverment`s phazon... It has way too much bass and you can barely hear other sounds (synths, etc).

many greetings,

f0x

tek - we think alike. as much as i would love to see pvd and sasha at arc, the thought of that crowd just kills me.

NO YOU SHOULD DEFINITELY GO. for all the crap i give the sound system you shouldn't dare miss pvd in new york. i am not even that big a pvd fan (*braces for the lashing from rubriva and starfox*) and i don't like the club but i'm still shelling out $40 to be there. i am just saying that the club is dissapointing and not as good as it should be. pvd may not sound his best on that system but it's still pvd....

Re: Re: Re: I don't like Roxy

why? u seem to be doin it every saturday..
All they need is a few crown ce-4000 amps ($2000) and a lesson in phisics....
40 speakers all pointing down @ the same spot wont give u surround dimension and nice sound.. Place is mad small, they can make it sound incredible, by simply choosing proper locations for their speakers..
And where the hell r subwoofers in that place?
I wanna see one in each corner of the place on the ground, where they belong...

i hate rolling - but that's subject for another thread entirely. i had a great time at roxy for scott bond, though i spent most of it in the back room cause scott bond wasn't doing it for me. the only dj that night in the main room who i thought sounded good on that system was edgar v.

and i don't hate roxy so much as i get no excitement over the prospect of going there again, even for a great dj. regardless, i'll be making several apperances there this october....

Posted by Phazon on Sep-16-2002 23:34:

Phazon is actually the design and casing of the speakers, JBL is what really supplies the output.
DJ's like Sasha and PVD would most likely refuse to spin at a club with a shit sound system. Theres also such a variation in their styles that if they play back to back nights like they will in Oct-Nov, they'll definitely spend a considerable amount of their time tuning PhazonSound.
Theres alo alot of factors involved as why you may not be satisfied with the results of certain systems, It goes as far was where the speakers are positioned, is the system tuned for clarity or bass or both and the size of the club. You'll only know what hits you best when you tune it yourself.

Posted by amdmaxx on Sep-16-2002 23:53:

I think like that when I go to any club, except SF (ducking, getting ready for flames)..

HA-DU-KEN (fireball) u've been flamed "fac-trey" style

Posted by Taub on Sep-17-2002 06:42:

so it looks like a lot of people will be going to roxy 3 friday nights in a row

Oct 18 tiesto
Oct 25 sasha
Nov 1 paul van dyk

Posted by EnigmaT on Sep-17-2002 07:22:

What's that Oct 25 Sasha? You mean it's no longer the night before PVD. I thought I'd be missing Sasha that weekend. Now I'm Psyched!!

Looks like 3 weeks at Roxy for me. As for "rolling there makes it fun" I rolled at almost every NYC club and Roxy is my least favorite place to roll at.

Everyone always said Glow had a horrible Sound system. I thought is was the best I've ever heard this weekend. Hopefully Roxy will suprise us in the same way before Tiesto comes. It's sounds like all it needs is an adjustment in the bass/treble and some speakers to be repositioned. What I hate most about that place is the lighting. Roxy always make me think of pink. I doubt there going to change that though.
