Unhappy Help with my new 1200

ive recently bought a single technics 1200 deck (cant afford the rest) just to be able to listen the vinyl i have.

anyway, i have low output(volume) coming from the speakers im using - the deck is plugged into a powerful amp - its weird- cant get much volume out of the amp but when plugged through the tv it seems louder!!!!!

any ideas????????

You need to plug the turntable into a phono input. Most mixers have that, some amps also.

You see, a turntable doesn't output at line level as most other playing devices do (cd player, tape, ...). They require a special preamp called RIAA or phono preamp. The phono inputs on mixers/amps have such preamp. If you only have line inputs, there are separate RIAA preamps.

thank you so much for the quick reply!

i thought AUX and phono r the same thing-
cause we plugged it into the AUX socket and it didnt work.

does this essentially mean i need to buy either a mixer or separate RIAA preamp???????

Yeah DJ Thy is absolutely correct. To give you an example, your common mixer will have both phone and line-in inputs. If I place my turntable on a Line-in, you can bearly hear the sound coming through, and vice versa... If i place a cd player or tape, etc through the phono... it will be very distorted as the input volume (signal)will be overpowering.

On that topic, is the turntable (record player) the only device consired to be phono (as far as input)?

Yes it is. All the other things have a "line"-output, which means that the output voltage varies between +1,55V and -1,55V. Since your turntable has no signal amp in it, the signal only varies between +0.03V and -0.03V (forgive me if the voltages aren't exactly right). The signal is generated by your stylus, and goes directly to your output wires. Since all the other outputs from cd-players, casettedecks, tuners etc. etc. are line outputs, you can put all these tings on your AUX input, but your turntable won't work there properly.
