Tiesto Commits to Long-Term Residency in Las Vegas
Top DJs have been doing residencies in Las Vegas since the Nineties, when guys like Erick Morillo and Paul Oakenfold planted their roots in Sin City. And more recently, the Wynn and Cosmopolitan hotels locked up Kaskade, Deadmau5 and more. But no EDM act has made a commitment quite like the one Ti�sto is making in 2013.
"I'm going to dedicate my year to Las Vegas. Just Vegas, maybe a couple of festivals. I haven't decided yet," Ti�sto tells Rolling Stone. As part of his pledge to spend the year in the desert, where he has entered into a new partnership with MGM Grand Hotel, he is bypassing Ibiza, Spain, the long undisputed dance capital of the world, for the summer entirely.
"With the scene blowing up in America, Vegas is so much fun now," he says. "It's the right time to do it. I do everything on my gut feeling, and I felt like it's gonna be awesome there. I've been to Ibiza for 10 years, and I love Ibiza, but I always look for something new and a new challenge."
As part of his 20-month deal with MGM, Ti�sto will perform more than 20 daytime shows at the outdoor pool. But the crux of his residency, which begins in April, will be more than 40 gigs at the new five-level Hakkasan Restaurant and Bar, an ambitious space that holds more than 7,000 people. "They want to make it an experience," he says. "For sure, the production inside the club is going to be amazing."
Ti�sto plans to deliver a new show each week to keep audiences on their toes. "I think nowadays, with people having mobile phones and the Internet, you have to be even more aware that people see the show even before they come. You have to make sure you can always surprise them every time you do a production," he says.
Part of how he intends to do that is by bringing fresh talent with him. "I love that I can bring some of the new DJs to my home," he says. "I want to have new DJs every week there."
For longtime admirers of the DJ, the move shouldn't come as a complete surprise. In 2011, while speaking to Rolling Stone about his College Life tour across universities, Ti�sto admitted that after two decades of nonstop touring around the globe he was looking to settle down a bit and be closer to the music industry hub of Los Angeles.
"I can be more in the studio with artists [this way] instead of just bouncing tracks back and forth, and really produce other people's albums and songs. So that's going to be the biggest change," he says. "It doesn't matter if they're famous or not � I just want to meet other creative people who can maybe bring something different to the studio than what I have. I think that's the most important thing for me."

ibiza is being closed out for vegas. That just about tells us what is so wrong with the commercial edm scene. Hopefully this moves just pushes the commercial scene out more and helps flourish the already great underground scene.

Ive never understood why anyone would wan't to go to Vegas. Seems like a shit fake place in general. Figures thats why Tiesto wants to be there.
I flew to Vegas a couple years ago for Spring Break for Tiesto's residency at the Hard Rock.
Met some TAs there and the show was relatively fun.
Drai's After Hours club the following night was fucking amazing, though.
I don't know who was on those decks but he had that place jamming from 3 till 8 in the morn.
Some dude was playing along on bongos to the house music. So epic.
Fun trip. Probably wouldn't go back, though, as it's a one time type of thing with friends and there's just so many other places to explore.

That just about tells us what is so wrong with the commercial edm scene.
Vegas is fun for being Vegas, but for the music it blows. I'll still have fun in the clubs, but it's not the music that brings me back, that's for sure.
This whole thing perfectly outlines Tiesto IMO. The guy is looking purely for cash, he doesn't give a fuck about the music. He only cares about his contract and Vegas is where the big bucks are right now, so in his mind it's the only answer.

Basically a drum solo. Impressive for those that cant do it for about 2 minutes then fucking annoying. Also something most 20 year olds can do that actually put the time in.
Not nearly enough cynicism - the crowd of ignorant plebes in the video are still losing their shit and dancing their asses off when I play it.
Drugs are a wonderful thing. Just rather sad to see kids partying witn someone twice their age. More sad that djs continue to do it like an aged rock band on their 4rth reunion tour. Clubbing is for the young. I understand these djs typically have some issues and nothing else to do to make a living. Still cringe worthy. Bunch of bret michaels.
Turntablism is somewhat different but these human jukeboxes do it for the same reason people still club in their 30s. It is kinda lame.
You know, maybe some people just prefer dancing over jaded intellectualism, regardless of their age. Or is there some magic button that I'm unaware of that turns off your feet and moves all of your energy up into your head when you turn 30?
I can still do a backflip. But I would rather do adult things than be surrounded by kids and junky adults that didnt get ghe memo. The performer should be able to connect with their audience. How a 40 year old can connect with a room full of drug addled young adults.... djs do it because they are emotionally stunted and still find it rewarding. That and they all tend to be heavy drug users that enjoy being surrounded by similar users. I get those that do it for money, but say in your case, no money, awful hours to perform for kids. Kinda fucked.

Had a feeling this would piss off all those delusional +30 djs and wannabe producers convinced their time will come. Go to steves, check out the keyboard guys, they are pretty much the equivalent. Too stubborn to realize they are a walking cliche. I get why these words hurt. Why not just accept fate and let the youth do things meant for youth. There is something incredibly desperate with all these aging jukeboxes playing a game that is meant for another generation. Edm is pretty much the only scene were you get old farts playing rockstar. Well that and shitty cover bands that think hair rock will come hack. I get the legacy djs as they are like a museum. But the rest of you old farts, give it a rest. Nobody wants to look up and see some bald overweight underachiever.
you want to make a difference, be a mentor or something to the youngins that are up and comming. A healthy scene is a young scene and your old asses should watch from the sideline .

My grandpa was a jive-kid way back in the '40s. Jitterbuggin' and all that. Y'know, a total youth movement. He'd still go to little shindigs with his wife all the way into his '70s, and probably still would if he was physically able to.
But he should have let it go after WW2, grow up and accept it was no longer fashionable to juke'n'jive. And lets not even get started on the live bands playing the music! Let it go, man, it's not 1939 anymore!
