Paul Kalkbrenner is one of the techno scene�s most glamorous figures. Even before everyone watched �Berlin Calling�, this film about Berlin�s nightlife, in which Paul Kalkbrenner plays a drugged up techno DJ, which made him famous over night, he made quite an impact.Yet, these days, the crowd�s ecstatic even before the first beat is played. Overwhelming enthusiasm is all around and almost tangible. And Kalkbrenner�s reaction? He�s bending over his controls, dreamy in a way, moving back and forth, smiling, and sometimes, as if he was in a trance, slowly raising his fist in the air. From time to time, he�s adjusting the monitors. Every move is answered with frenetic cheers as if he could no longer make any mistakes. By pitching the higher frequencies only, he gets his followers in a craze only to pay them off with the sound of their beloved bass drum eventually. His interaction with the crowd couldn�t be more smoothly.
