Caffeine

Until very recently I basically drank no caffeine - no tea, no coffee, no energy drinks. None. But then I started a new job that involved waking up much earlier than previously and I was so zombified in the morning I took to having a can of Red Bull to perk me up and get me through. After only three months I've already realised that I struggle to get through a working day without that can. I'm much less productive, I get irritable and I lose focus. The problem I have is I never get enough sleep - generally less than 7 hours a night, and then if I go clubbing at the weekend I'm lucky to get any sleep at all on Saturday.

But still, it raises the question. Most people seem to take in significant quantities of caffeine every single day. How dependent on it are you?

I used to drink 2-3 cans of Red Bull almost daily. But I decided to get healthier so I've worked my way down to a litre of black (cream and sugar are bad and make you fat) coffee every day. Try to get off the Red Bull man, that shit'll kill you.

Never drink anything caffeinated.

Not very because i dont fight my natural cycles.

I took a three month break from it and didn't feel any better off. I can only afford 4 - 5 hours of sleep a night, so I'll probably drop caffeine for a while once these projects are done.

Actually, I got "addicted" to iced café au lait when I was in Japan because I love milk (rather than coffee), and I tend to drink one or two cups every day. When I do drink black coffee, it's because it's free and people gather around the office kitchen to chat sipping it. I'd say 300 ml per day is about average for me.

As for Coke/Pepsi, only on the weekends, and with tons of ice. Less than half a litre, that's for sure.

I drink a lot of tea, more for the ritual of taking a break though. I don't really have any particular habit or dependency. I go very long periods without it at all and am fine.

Back when I was a student I used to drink 6+ cups of coffee a day Strong shit too, like double espressos. These days I just have a single cup in the morning. I don't think I'm that dependant on it any more, as sometimes I skip a day (read as: I forgot to buy coffee ) and don't seem to be any worse off, energy-wise.

Good advice, although without cream and sugar to me is not drinkable, but at least with coffee you can keep it to a minimum.
Like Lira I also try to drink Coke/Pepsi only in the weekends.
I drink just 2-3 cups of coffee a day. Average for men over here is 7 and 5 for women.

I drink a lot of coffee. To the point where I will get a crippling headache sometime in the afternoon if I don't have at least a cup or two in the morning.

So... extremely dependent. I guess.

Not particularly - I'm very sensitised to the stuff, so if I do partake, it has to be on a full stomach and when I' don't have an overly crazy day ahead. I enjoy the occasional single-shot espresso, but I mostly drink chai, maybe 3-4 times/week. The trick is getting sufficient exercise and sleep - I treat people with caffeine dependencies all the time, and it creates a vicious cycle that tends to rob people of the latter, making the former a seemingly formidable task. Excess caffeine taxes both the adrenals and kidneys - end result is poor sleep patterns, low back pain, cold extremities, hair loss and death.

O.k., I lied about the last two, but you get the idea.

Luckily this hasn't happened to me.. yet. But I know lots of guys who are as dependent as you are, and who also get headaches.

I started drinking coffee regularly when I started working from 9 til 5. On average, I'll have around 4 coffee/espresso before lunch and around 3 after lunch, so I guess I'm quite the average Dutchman, referring to MB's post. But I can do without coffee. On weekends, I rarely drink coffee. I'll have a Red Bull prior to going clubbing though.

Interesting thing that happened once I went black coffee. Now I can NOT drink it with any milk or sugar.

My dishwasher at work thought he was doing me a favour by adding shit to my coffee. And when he asked about milk or cream I was like "No, black, plain." But little did I know he'd already put a spoon of sugar in it, not stirred, and when I got about halfway through the coffee it was disgusting syrup at the bottom.

Does caffeine/red bull work for any of you?

I remember the first time I drank Red Bull. When I was in driving school, they only had theoretical classes early in the morning - and being an owl, I was barely conscious during the ordeal. One day I decided to drink Red Bull (and I didn't even have coffee back then). The result? I passed out and remained sound asleep for the next 3 or 4 hours, when the cleaning staff woke me up

To this day I don't feel it makes any difference, energy wise...

Try a coffee enema. I hear it's a good pick me up.

Posted by Adam420 on Mar-11-2013 22:54:

Sometimes I need it and sometimes I can go for days without it. Trying not to drink Red Bull anymore though.

Pretty addicted one way or the other. I try and limit myself to tea, but can only achieve 3rd gear in getting shit done with that. One Rock Star later, and I'm easily flying at 5th.

Black coffee is basically the best substance in the world.

Posted by Nrg2Nfinit on Mar-12-2013 00:19:

1 small coffee a day

usually i only finish half of it.

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Mar-12-2013 00:20:

i drink a lot of tea but there is virtually no downside to that. It is pretty much healthier to drink than water. Maybe yerba mate is something you should try. No coffeine but it is a stimulant. Those energy drinks are so fucking bad for you. You might as well smoke meth.

That may be doubleplusgood for constipation, since coffee is a laxitive.

This is actually a good alternative. Smoothies with the yerbs added does the trick for a while. If they're on sale, I'll go with an 'energy smoothie' any chance I get over the Rock Stars.
