Anybody using Maschine to sequence external synths?

I'm re-exploring the idea of buying another Maschine so that I can work away from Cubase a little more.

It seems ideally setup to act as both a drum machine and sequencer so I was wondering if any of you dudes are doing just that?

I'm not looking for full on DAW style automation, more like drums and maybe half a dozen tracks of midi to control a few analogue synths.

Oh, and as it'll me a Mk2 model now, how are you finding doing all this is standalone mode with no screen?

Why not buy genome on iPad? I sequence synths with that, synced to cubase even

Posted by tehlord on Mar-18-2013 17:32:

I dunno, part of me thinks that I might as well just use Cubase if I start using iPad apps like that.

Plus I'm not really a fan of touchscreen controls, I like tactile feedback.

Just buy a line 6 mobilizer
Genome is midi only, very straightforward.
Machine is just a controller, dead without the PC

I know, I had one. Thing is that I don't have to sit at the PC to use it, I can work it from the UI. It send midi out so I should be able to set up sequences and run them direct from the controller itself.

Watch some demo's

I've tried sequencing my hardware synths with Maschine a while ago just for the hell of it, but it was not very elegant IMO. I'm not crazy about Maschine's DAW-like capabilities, though, so take that into consideration. I definitely prefer working with either a dedicated software DAW or a dedicated hardware sequencer when working with hardware synths. I actually sorta miss my old Roland MC-50mkII. My old E-mu XL7 Command Station was pretty cool for sequencing hardware synths, too, and it had built-in drums/synth (well, ROMpler).

Just not feelin' it tbh. I find apps annoying to use at the best of times.

btw - there's a TOFT ATB32 for sale on Ebay

I'm with you there, it's why I sold my one.

I still like the idea of using it as a mini DAW away from DAW though. I've looked at a lot of hardware sequencers and they're all either too expensive or too limited for my needs.

Maybe I'm just not sure what I want until I start using it

Since there is this talk round here of getting back to retro basics, maybe get a multi-track reel to reel!

In terms of a sequencer I used to use a mother synth, the Yamaha SY85, and as long as you have a dedicated clock somewhere that did a grand job of sequencing.

AKAI MPC would probably be your best bet.

Reel to reel, lmao. That would be fun for about 10 minutes

I'm pretty sure what I'm looking for doesn't exist yet.

Oddly the closest match is that Genome app that Raphie mentioned, but I just dislike using touchscreens for detailed control.

Still, it's only a fiver so it's worth a shot I reckon.

You'll be hooked, it's like the ableton session view for miidi, togetherbwith line6 mobilizer2 it's golden

Posted by tehlord on Mar-19-2013 22:25:

Ableton. Another thing I facking hate

Can that iPad thingy work wirelessely?

Hmmmm, now I'm thinking about MIDI routing and getting a headache.

Posted by Raphie on Mar-20-2013 08:27:

Yes it can, but you need your laptop to make it wired again, ill make some pics later on how i do it
It's really the next best thing to a Cirklon, there is nothing else as basic, tactile intuitive, while still covering al midi ground

Yeah I saw that one. I'll give it a whirl for sure as I'll be using the iPad for other stuff anyway.

Maschine sucks!
Reason's Kong is king!
Don't hate!!

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Mar-31-2013 06:40:

maschine handles groove templates rather bad in that they didn't really think about it and only as a work around can you do it. Didn't reason only support midi this version ? Kong seems much more adept at applying groove template information including extracting information from audio.

Posted by tehlord on Mar-31-2013 10:07:

If I used Reason I might as well carry on just using Cubase.

Posted by Juan Paulino on Mar-31-2013 10:52:

Reason is a poor man's daw.

Troll Mode On

Posted by Looney4Clooney on Mar-31-2013 22:32:

Costs about the same as any other daw. And it seems to have a core following and regular updates. They have had 3 versions since logic 9?

Posted by Juan Paulino on Apr-01-2013 09:49:

Yeah thats right. Hmph.

Posted by Zak McKracken on Apr-01-2013 20:03:

now that Reason 7 has midi out i might end up broke getting hardware again. fuck.
