Circus Refurbished?

See Matt Darey & Kristina Sky are playing at Circus on May 4th. And it is saying it's at the "NEW" Circus and saying it has been refurbished.

If it has...anyone know how so?

It's saying? Where did you see/hear that? They've done some upgrades and added some things. That's all I know.

how would it be refurbished? with refurbished funktion one speakers? and refurbished laser and fog machine? what about refurbished DJs?

I do not know I just know I saw the words "refurbished" used in one post and "THE NEW CIRCUS" in another.

Victor Dinaire was there on Sat night... my buddy stopped by to say hi and said there were like 25 people there max lol. Said he saw some minor renovations but nothing too crazy.

damn and i thought ruby was empty when i left Friday to go to Vessel. the belasco and circus should just give up. there was a thread about belasco being empty too.

what I think Circus should do to stay alive: switch over to another EDM genre that has less competitor in the market (e.g. Dubstep). I think it would make a great place for those young and new generation of Dubstep kids, they were in their teenagers years a couple years ago, but now they should be old enough to go to clubs, and if Circus' management is smart enough, with good marketing they can monopolize the Dubstep genre in Hollywood.

Just sayin.. not that I like Dubstep, and if they do switch over to Dubstep, I would probably never land my feet there anymore But I can see the potential for Circus to stay alive and make $$$

bottom line problem is any well known dj is for the most part going to be booked by Avalon/Giant/Insomniac/Exchange/SBE/Muse.

sure once in a while someone will play there but we all know Gene is not going to try and grab anyone so that leaves outside promoters to try and they most likely will fail in terms of booking any major talent. no major talent = empty club.

different gameplan - they are going after the crowd that doesn't care who the dj is. not an apples-to-apples comparison.

It's all about promotion and the name you have for yourself. Everyone knows Insomniac club nights are going to be busy regardless of who is playing. People want to be around large crowds because they want to fit in and be apart of the cool thing, so they stick to what they know is going to bring that large crowd. Once they step out of their comfort zone and it doesn't live up to expectation, they flee and never return.

LA is a hard market for promoters that aren't huge. It's basically just accept what is available, or give up, because it is extremely competitive.

Most people don't care about major talents, but do care about a cracking party. When you are in the business, you've got to keep a coolly calculating head, not let your love of the music misguide your business decisions. The SF Dirtybirds have the same DJs rotating open, headline, and close. Every time when they have a party, they pack Mezzanine, which is about the same size of Ruby Skye.

Exactly, the keyword here is 'business'. I see promoting as a business, I'm sorry but it's not just about the talent you're bringing, but you have to see an overall perspective, including your market and competitors.

Heck, most top 100 DJMag DJs & Producers are also very successful businessmen. I see Armin as a very successful businessman for bringing ASOT to 13 different cities, I see Tiesto switching over from trance as a business decision, and S.H.M. for doing "One Last Tour" as a business strategy (as I'm sure they get together again later at some point).

Bottom line is, Circus needs to make a well-thought and in prompt business decision to survive in this market. I'd really hate to see Circus closed down,.. it's the first club I spin at

they need to remodel the place. that's a business decision they need to make. no legitimate promoter would step foot in that place considering its current reputation.

Vanguard had become a shit hole and has not been bought out by the SBE guys (famous for their couture clubs n shit) and guess who teamed up with them....... Insomniac!

Gene is nearing 50 years in the business (I think he's year 40 or something). He says he plans on retiring at 50 (last I spoke with him a couple of years ago), that's if he doesn't croak before. The problem with this is why would he want to spend a ton of money on remodeling, when he's planning on retiring?

Gene has owned that property forever so good chance is paid off. with the other nights it and Arena is open i don't think they are going anywhere any time soon unless those plans to build apartments there come back online.

if you are going to try and book lesser-known trance djs for Sat nights at Circus, you'll have to promote the heck out of it to draw a big crowd... and it will take time.

i never went but LMD did okay there with that same gameplan, correct?

maybe it's fun to discuss because you had one of THE BEST clubs in the country and all went to complete shit.

Wasn't aware that Gene has owned it for quite a long time, so it all makes sense to me as from the ROI stand point it has been probably going positive for a while unless the operating/overhead cost is bigger in weekly basis.

yeah LMD did 'okay' but that was before Insomniac took over Avalon and now Exchange LA (in which mostly trance DJs). I think Circus took a big hit when Exchange LA started bringing trance DJs, and now other OC clubs like Yost and Sutra are also taken over by Insomniac/Giant.

Sadly, my gut feeling is telling me if Circus ever remodeled and upgraded their sound system/lighting etc, the next promoter that will ever throw parties there is either Insomniac and Giant

PS. I agree with you Billy, state of Circus Disco is always fun to discuss, esp. here in TA cuz we want to relive that Spundae days (even though I have never experienced it myself but heard great great stories about it)

Insomniac worked hard to bring Exchange where it is now. Quite a few nights in the beginning were not as busy and even now they often have to fill the dancefloor with VIP tables or give out tons of guest list tickets.

I am wondering why we are talking about Circus when it really depends on the promoters. Noone else has done as well at Circus as Spundae/Godskitchen.
