The pair came across the border at Windsor, under the cover of attending a music festival in Detroit. They checked into their respective hotels, dirtied their rooms, and then each packed a backpack they had stashed in their luggage with three sets of clothes and their bag of tools, making sure to put the do not disturb notice on the door as they left. Meeting at the Greyhound terminal the man and the women paid cash for bus tickets. Their destination: Colorado.

The man mostly slept, snoring softly, his balding head reflecting the reading light of the passenger next to him. The women, seated two rows up and on the left, sat rigidly, her head cocked, staring out the window, but with each passing highway light she grew more and more disgusted by the reflection of the women on the opposite side of the bus, who she assumed must have purchased two tickets for her seat, as she filled both of them with no room to spare.
