Damn fine mix, Jon! Great tracks throughout, though personal highlights were Stage One, Papillon, and Oyama. Quality mixing and flow, too. Looking forward to your next mix, mate

Steady as she goes for the first hour, clunking and chunking with different proggy beatz until you drop Niyaz - Dilruba (Andy Gray �greyed out� remix) which suddenly had me TRIPPING BALLS. You dropped a few other familiar tunes after that, just driving the mix along until the second hour where you are starting to chill out and diversify your progginess. You are changing energy levels here and there, and that worked for the length of the mix. Some tracks I feel like I'm banging hard and then the next track I need a cigarette (even though I don't smoke). I definitely appreciated finishing off with a little Liquid Soul toward the end, that was boss.

All in all, a great live set. I can see J00F's trance crackers dancing the whole night to this. Good stuff

I think you summarised exactly what I was trying to do. Dilruba was definitely the 'there are enough people in the club now; dance you bastards!' track. It did the job but it was probably a bit too massive for that time of night and difficult to follow up. I'm going to play it later on next time, when everyone is already fired up.

It was quite nice playing long enough to meander with the energy too - rarely get the chance to do that. It was interesting playing stuff like '6 weeks and 1 million years'. Half the crowd stopped dancing with that track which made me think I had messed it up a bit, but the other half were slack jawed and memorised when the melody came in, and some people came to the DJ box to ask what it was, saying how beautiful it was

Sweet things was actually a request by the way - I'm quite glad the dude requested it as it went off!

It was good to hear a long set from you. I didn't recognize '6 weeks and 1 million years' when listening to this, but, now that I know what track it is, it was definitely a highlight of the mix. Fucking fantastic track.

This set was huge for me. Even though I had to break it into three parts, every time I came back to it I easily got back into it pretty fast due to your track selection, programming, and mixing which were all tip top imo. This set is DJ crowd control at its finest and it was smooth for bangin' tunes with some nice blends and cuts to keep the flow tight.

The first hour is just right up my alley with deep dark tribal/prog house(finger lickin good) and peeked with Dilruba. After that it went in all proggy directions from spacey to rougher tracks and in my opinion is the best section of the set because it showed off the mixing and programming with different sounds. The whole set really is just propulsive.

The whole chunk from the Bioluminescence track to 6 Weeks and 1 Million Years was a trip again with said mixing and such. The best transition I thought was the blend from Supersonic to Stage One. The smooth EQing just melted those tracks together and then a nice bassline swap. After that, the Hypnotic Duo track signals you're ready to change gears.

What was the room like for that Papillon remix? Acoustically speaking.
Was the bassline reverberating the hell out of the room? It's so thick.


If you hadn't chose tracks like 6 Weeks and 1 Million Years and the Oyama remix, I'm not sure I would have listened. It's interesting to know how people reacted to such a dark beauty like '6 Weeks'. To round it up, I really liked the the section from Sights Beyond to Oyama(icing on the cake) I really heard a bunch of new track and look forward to hearing more from you.

Wow that's an amazing review. I think when you put mixes on forums, this is an example of the best kind of feedback you could ever hope for (I don't mean the positivity, more the detail that you go in to). So thanks very much!

The sound system at the H Bar when we hold JOOF Editions (Dan, the other resident, brings his own rig especially) is high fidelity and earth shaking. From where I was stood, Papillon sounded huge in there, and it certainly had everyone dancing; it's a great track, and you are right, it has a very distinctive bassline. I'm learning more and more how important the groove in a baseline is when you are DJing early on.

The tunes that got the best reactions on the night were Dilruba, L-Syd, La Consagracian de la noche, and all of the last 4 tunes.

What surprised me was that Oliver Prime - Sights Beyond (one of my all time favourites) suffered a similar fait to 6 weeks & 1 million years. I've played that tune before at other gigs, pitched up at 138 bpm, and it's gone ballistic. Not the case this time; although some people were clearly loving the melody in the main breakdown, a lot of people seemed to stop dancing. I think it has to do with the way the baseline kind of disappears after the first break and returns very gradually, rather than slamming back in like with most tracks. Maybe people were waiting for that to happen and it never did; but when I've played it faster at peak time it seems more anthemic so people keep dancing? I dunno. I still think its a masterpiece so it won't stop me playing it, but I may think twice before using it in a warm up set again

Yeah, Sights Beyond looked a bit out of place on the tracklist and I was wondering how it would fit. It didn't sound terrible by any means, but it was odd hearing it pitched down (rather than ramped up). I think that track is quite flowing with plenty of trancey momentum - long arpeggiated synth lines, quite propulsive hi-hats and a rapid bassline, which is not really the kind of track that works best in a warm-up set (perhaps why it didn't go down so well).

Anyway, you already know my thoughts of this mix. Not being a huge fan of the dark prog sound I wasn't enraptured by it, but in technical terms it's amongst your best sets and you're really improving at programming a steady warm-up set without any of the obvious panic inclusions of your early warm-up mixes.

Yea you are probably right there - I think this is the sort of lesson you can only learn with experience :-)

Thanks for the comments as always. I'm definitively a lot more confident at it now than I was a year or so ago. Again, the only way to learn is to play live really - so difficult to learn what really works just be going clubbing.
