Been searching for this song since around 1985

There's a song I can only describe as trance or space synth that I think I heard on someone's Walkman in the mid-80's. I have very little to describe it and no recording, unfortunately. I've been unsuccessfully trying to identify it again since that time (it's my "Rosebud" I guess). All I can do is offer these bits of info and hope that one of you will know the song I'm referring to:

* it must have come out sometime between 1982-1985
* it had a repetitive beat and hypnotic melody throughout
* there were ambient sounds of distant laughter, etc.
* it had a spacey, hypnotic sound and no lyrics/vocals

If this doesn't work I could upload an mp3 of me humming the melody but I'm trying to avoid that.

If you can help me identify it I can finally die in peace!
