Big Ears ASOT yearmix 2004 - Was this year when trance hit its first peak? (link & tracklist)

This definitely is one of my favorite sets of all time. The tracks sound very unrestricted and very objective. Unfortunately, they're not new and if anyone of my newbie friends started bragging about trance and/or AVB I would ask him/her have you heard this shit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2qbY3whnZs

Do you think before 2010 this is when trance hit its peak? What's your guys' insight?

While not it's *first* peak, it marked the earlier portion of what I would definitely consider to be one. That whole period from roughly 2003-2006 was quite a terrific time for trance. ASOT and GDJB were week after week featuring some of the best trance I've (to this day) ever heard, Armin's and Schulz's compilation series had just kicked off what would be three solid years of quality installments, the ISOS series was back and sounding great, production tools and techniques had really begun to pick up...

Alex Stealthy, Funabashi, Mark Otten, Peter Martin, Kyau & Albert, Super8 & Tab, Ozgur Can, Mike Foyle, Probspot, Benz & MD, Gabriel & Dresden....yeah...those were some great times.

I miss McProg.

A peak, but nothing compared to 1999. I think the sound of 2004 marked the point where everything switched from analogue to digital, and allowed a load of young producers with actual musical ideas to get that across without the need to buy masses of equipment. Today in the digital age it seems the ideas have gone and an entire generation is obsessed with technical perfection rather than originality.

Posted by Rodri Santos on Apr-25-2013 11:45:

i've this mix and i feel it's a little overrated, may be a good year as the tracks featured in this mix are like the 2nd generation classics like hammer & bennet - language, origene sanctuary, Armin stuff or adagio for strings, mark Otten - tranqility, yimanya, solid globe-sahara etc... but i remember listening to this last year on the airport and almost falling asleep (8 hours waiting for a plane might have affected my overall mood though).

2004 seems to be the last good year of trance but not the best for sure, till 2005 even the Armada label released class stuff, then it all went into the pop direction that rules nowadays.

Posted by Kilixpree on Apr-25-2013 13:48:

yupi, a little overrated

also, omg, i loved so much the old electronic elements stuff...

perry o'neil, dj remy, schulz, pinkbox special, etc

Y U SO GOOD

That sub label had more quality releases signed to it than everything on and under Armada combined:

Clear Blue
Perfect Wave
Arcadia
She Turns
Simply Blue
In the End

...wow. And I think those were all in the same volume!

99 was its peak and after 2003 it became pure shit, most of the time. Beginning of the end of great trance era. Tiesto, Armin, Markus? What a talentless shit with 4-note melodies and boring vocal. FTS. Back then I fully moved to hardtrance/dance, its was like a breath of fresh air.

It was all about Oakenfold's Creamfields. What other trance DJ mix has ever gotten nominated for a Grammy?

Posted by JonDC on Apr-25-2013 19:13:

Certainly not the first peak, but this was one of the last years where the elite trance DJs were still playing good music.

I love this set

Posted by Trancelover03591 on Apr-25-2013 20:16:

I agree with the people who say 1999, if you had to choose one year. I think Paul Oakenfold Creamfields 1999 is a good example of the trance that was around at the time. But that is mainly personal taste.

It is a difficult question because Trance to me is so varied. It is hard to choose one year, other than personal taste because different styles were popular different years. For example, the Goa mix, 1994 was really cool for its' time and place and is different than the other era's such as progressive trance, tech trance, uplifting trance, electro trance, vocal trance, ect. I think there are classic tracks all across the past 25 years or so.

Posted by Lews on Apr-25-2013 20:29:

How the fuck can a track sound objective?

Also, without commenting on the set itself, there's no way in hell it should be considered the first peak of trance.

Posted by _Ocean_Drive_ on Apr-25-2013 20:33:

I always enjoy those end-of-year mixes, if not for the sheer technical brilliance of them.

I think everything post 'Another World' was an attempt to gain pop traction, and it's funny that he got the Grammy nod with his least pop-friendly mix (and his last good one, for that matter). You'd think that something like 'Bunkka' or to a lesser extent 'Great Wall' would have been more likely to get that kind of acknowledgement. Maybe they just decided in 2004 that it was time to include him, and nominated whatever in-stores-now Oakenfold compilation just happened to be out that year.

Coldharbour Sessions 2004, Miami '05, Ibiza '06, Amsterdam '07; a consistent three year run of quality compilations before it all devolved into the unlistenable mess featured week after week, year after year.

It's because 2004 was the first year there was even a category for 'Dance/Electronica' at the Grammys.

Yeah, I looked up the nominations for that year. One of those things is not like the others...and obviously included simply because the name had to be there.

I maintain it's a shame he didn't win that year, only for the sheer hilarity of it.
