Insomniac To Put $35 Million Into Production Of EDC Las Vegas

That's a shit load of money but I'm sure they'll be making way more than their money back.

$35 Million Says Not To Miss EDC Las Vegas This Year

If a lineup boasting all of the best DJs in the world didn�t woo you enough into making it to EDC Las Vegas(or at least idolizing those who are going), the 35 million dollars Pasquale Rotella and Insomniac is putting into the production of the event should be the icing on the cake. When asked for specifics about how the money would be spent, Rotella said, �We�re creating an environment along the lines of what you see at a theme park � but on an even larger scale.� To put $35 million into perspective that�s about 90% of Armin Van Buuren�s net worth. I think Armin could throw a pretty damn impressive party with virtually all of his money.

115,000 festival goers a day sure helps to allow for that massive budget, but you can�t help but wonder just how incredible the scene will be with by far the largest budget Insomniac has ever allocated for the event. The mayor of Las Vegas feels bad for those of you who can�t make it to the festival. He�s decided to make sure everyone in Vegas gets a taste of the experience. June 18-25 has been officially declared EDC Week in Las Vegas (what other place in the world would that happen?). Marquee, Steve Wynn�s Encore Resort, and the Hard Rock Rehab pool will offer incredible shows with the likes of Armin Van Buuren, Dash Berlin, Avicii, Kaskade, and many others all week long.

well, i hope nothing bad happens. Last years crazy wind shit. I'm sure they are covered by insurance though.

Well at least if the wind comes back this year, the stage facing the stands (Cox/Enter stage in 12) is wind proofed and will stay open. If that's the case then we'll have a single stage with over 100,000 people at it haha. Then Steve Aoki will probably start playing and dump on the whole thing.

How much were tickets again? 35 millions is just about break even on 115k * $300/ticket (34.5 mil). Obviously they'll have plenty of other sources of revenue but it's still surprising how much they're spending on the event.

i remember a friend telling me that Pasqual was willing to spend as much money as needed on EDC as needed. The first event in Vegas, they expected to lose money yet they broke even. I'm not sure how they did on the events since then.

No, can't hate on Insomniac. Their productions are on point, free water, etc. It's the crowds that are bothering me lately, and the DJs repeating songs and not pushing the envelope. The environment is there. Let's get the right people.

ya insomniac puts a lot of effort into their productions, thats what theyre known for. but the (majority) audience indeed suck at these. last years crowd was a big enough turn off for me to not go this year. pasquale even said that at main stage last year, you would hear the same track multiple times throughout the night. something he didnt like.

no coincidence the numbers line up, the business model for these big festivals is usually to break even on production vs ticket sales, and then make all the profit on concessions. (i assume 'production' in the OP included artist fees, although that wasn't clear)

Does Insomniac get $ from food/alcohol? I thought the venue usually takes those sales, but maybe insomniac worked it out differently. Obviously they're making money from other stuff like shuttles, cuts from hotel deals, etc, but that seems like it would be pretty small in comparison to the $35 mil outlay.

Its pasqual.....you know he doesnt go into a deal without him coming out on top...of course they make money, shit loads of it!

Will never be like ID&T production and quality in the near future though (excluding american ID&T). Different mindset of running and producing the event. Pasquale will probably just add art installations and what not. Nothing different to overall festival layout or theme or stage production. Still LCD screens everywhere with LED walls.

keep in mind VIP sales too. There are a bunch of VIP tix as well as cabanas - 1 $200 bottle of champagne for 3k? Rack em up! Also all the "road to EDC stuff" makes them money.

After EDC 09, the crowd just turned awful the next year. Yeah I'm jaded, fuck it. The festival scene is a joke

This should make them some money. Lol. Wow. It's almost comical to hear what promoters in Vegas can get rich people to throw down for. I would just have promoters walking around the nice casinos looking for dudes who won a shitload of money selling them a package on the spot!

seems as though they'll be profitable this year... how so remains the questions.

ticket sales should cover pretty much all costs if not leave some profit. Add in VIP and tables and sponsors and hotel commissions seems as though they'll make a few million but that's only like 10% so not a huge profit margin.

I believe their assets include positive vibes, beautiful people, and "the experience", which are intangibles that make the company an extra 20-30%.

Are you guys seriously trying to argue that at EDC 09 there was a large percentage of quality EDM fans in the crowd?

I'd say the music has gotten more poppy/cheesy/repetitive (in terms of track selection) for sure but the crowd is WAY more educated, especially at EDC. Back in the 2000's it's a bunch of kids with pacifiers, glowsticks, and 0 regard for who is playing. Armin van who?! I gotta sit on the ground in my cuddle puddle and watch this lightshow! I remember EDC 07 literally the entire back 50% of the coliseum grounds was just people sitting down doing lightshows and smoking.

Please don't pretend like EDC 09 was some sort of golden age. I would take today's EDC crowd over 09 any year, personally. I'd rather tolerate some "rage" bros over cuddle puddles and e-tards. These days there are way more people singing along, excited about the DJ, and excited to actually dance and enjoy the music rather than sit around and look at glow sticks. That stuff still happens too of course, but it's a little more sidelined and more prevalent at the smaller events / warehouse parties / etc.

I think the crowd has gotten better and so has the experience - free water, faster lines, better stage productions. In my opinion at this point it's the DJs and talent bookers who are dropping the ball - playing repeat sets and offering the same lineups over and over, not taking any risks.

I can't speak to previous years, but last year I would certainly not called the people I encountered "educated."

everyones 'golden age' is marked by when they first got into the scene.

i swear some of you sound like a bunch of old folks squawking about "back in MY day" blah blah blah.

you're getting older, music is evolving and you are not evolving with it. each year there is a new crop of 18yo who are loving THEIR 'golden age' and in a few years many of them will sound just like you do now.

In all honesty though, the only thing about the current scene that bothers me is how they keep trying to force pop culture into it. Rap music, Rhianna, and Madonna need to stay the fuck out. Dubstep and the dick heads that followed it into the scene can go away too.

Seriously. Lots of rose colored glasses in this thread. Whoever posted about older EDC's (and massives in general) being giant drugfest cuddle puddles is absolutely right. The new fans, bro-ey as they are, are surprisingly knowledgeable and into their music. On the shuttles to EDC last year all I heard were conversations about the acts, timeslots, etc. Sure, I wasn't about to have a convo about Guy Gerber with any of them, but they knew the music and acts from their scene.

Besides, when we were getting started none of us knew half of the acts on the fliers either.

"WHO IS THIS GUY HE'S AMAZING!"
"FERRY CORSTEN!"
"OH MY GODDDDDD!!!!"

Last year I didn't bother to memorize timeslots for anyone at EDC except the techno stage, but whenever I got to a new stage I could just ask whoever was next to me who was playing and they'd give me a funny look and be like "this is Afrojack" (or whoever) and kinda snicker.

Sadly they follow the money and the more mainstream the sound becomes the more we will see things like the Apple Main Stage...or the Mountain DEW Dome... This is a for profit least we forget our favorite dj has a mortgage to pay and mouths to feed.
