Talk to sothis. Shes into Anime

Posted by naeblis on Sep-24-2002 16:31:

Oh! FO Sheezy!

I loved Cowboy Bebop. Can't even begin to explain the depth in that series, the ending was gorgeous. Trigun was good in the beggining, but sucked later due to lack of funding.

My suggestions: Vampire Hunter D - Bloodlust
Hellsing

PM me, I can point you to some IRC anime servers if you want?

hmm ok, depends on what you like.

hands down, best two new series out right now:
Witch Hunter Robin
Juuni Kokki

i agree with the Hellsing suggestion but witch hunter robin is better. its essentially hellsing with witches instead of vampires, and way better animation. perhaps not as much action, and the first 11 episodes are really episode-centric, but as of episode 12 theres already starting to be a really interesting plot. its just damn good.

juuni kokki needs no explanation, it just kicks ass.

if you are looking for mind fucks, theres Boogiepop Phantom, Lain, FLCL. im also told Soul Taker is a good mind fuck, i have it but havent watched it yet.

a really great series out there is Berserk. it is probably the most violent anime ive seen, and is COMPLETELY not the type of thing i would normally watch. (lots of violence, swordsman shit, etc)... but ill tell ya, its extremely fuckin good. to date its the only series that has made me incredibly angry (because of the end, which is undoubtedly the worst "ending" ever as far as im concerned.) luckily a second season is in pre production so hopefully we can see more.

Scryed is another good action series, about these people who have special powers called alters. again, not my usual cup of tea but its really good.

if you are looking for good mecha series, RahXephon supposedly is good. i watched the first 8 or so and it was boring but im told it gets a lot better. Vandread is something i think most people would like, lots of mecha, first season is so-so, second season kicks ass.

if you are looking for comedy type stuff (seems like youve never seen any, so it might be good to pick some up)
Fruits Basket (definitely get this one)
Digi Charat (its meant for kids but its really quite twisted and hilarious... even my dark industrial friends laugh at this)
Siawase Apartment's Okojo-san - this is a "new" series that one unknown group only subbed 3 episodes and then dropped it. its still playing in japan, luckily xenonfansubs has decided to pick it up. its really hilarious, about a ferret who escapes from a pet store, and lives with a guy and thinks everyone is his servant. he scratches everyone and is just really funny. not super cutesy.
Chobits newer series, kinda ecchi tho, i normally dont like ecchi but its entertaining

i recommend that you quickly go download Spirited Away, and insanely good movie.

ok thats a long list, so if i had to choose a few id get Juuni Kokki, Witch Hunter Robin, Fruits Basket, Lain. that covers some of the groups.

i wouldnt recommend irc to go get a lot of new stuff, tho. irc is good for getting new episodes, or episodes for a certain fansub group. direct connect is a much better way to get mass quantity, or complete series. im usually in a hub called AnimePlanet, but its a 25 gig min share. sounds like a lot, but its really not once you start getting anime. server is animeplanet.server41.com

i have been slowly leeching witch hunter robin to a lot of people in the chat room, one person has them all on her ftp so come in the chat room and you can get hooked up somehow. once everyone in dc and irc stops leeching spirited away from me (goddammit) i was going to start giving everyone juuni kokki and whatever else. so, if you dont want to deal with irc/dc, come in the chat

let me know if you need more suggestions.. again, it really depends on what genre you like, and when you are first getting into anime its hard to tell what you like or not, so you should try out a bit of everything.

Talking

DRAGON BALL Z!!!! biatch!!

Posted by sothis on Sep-24-2002 17:25:

i just realized maybe i should say what these series are about so you have some frame of reference

Witch Hunter Robin - group of people who hunt and capture witches who are using their power for evil. a craft user works with them. once captured, the witches are taken to the "factory" (so far, the series hasnt explained what this is yet, but you know it has to be something devious ). like i said before, beautiful animation, gorgeous soundtrack.

Hellsing - basically, same thing, but with vampires. and they dont capture, they just kill.

Juuni Kokki - ill just post what i wrote up for the xenonfansubs website for their juuni kokki page. Meet Yoko, an ordinary high school student... or is she? After a mysterious man named Keiki confronts her, she and two classmates are swept away to another world, full of demons and wonder. Unexplainable is Yoko's ability to speak the native tongue, and how she can wield a sword with deadly accuracy whenever a threat appears. Keiki disappears, leaving them to wonder, how do we get home? Betrayal, mystery, and discovery are found in the tale of 12 countries.
(cheezy, i know, but its supposed to make people want to see it )

Boogiepop Phantom - just a fucked up series about these kids with weird powers, a woman named Boogiepop Phantom, its just odd. i havent watched all the episodes yet but so far, thats essentially what its about. very dark.

Lain - the main question, where is the line between reality, and the "wired" (internet, etc)? begins with a classmate committing suicide, and later, sends an email saying she is alive, in the wired. story follow a girl named lain.

FLCL - flcl is just crazy nonsense so theres not much to explain

Soul Taker - havent watched it yet so im not sure.

Berserk - follows a swordsman named Gatts... he ends up travelling with a group of mercenaries, led by a man named Griffith, who aspires to have his own kingdom. this plot just flies out the window near the end and it just gets weird heh

Scryed - already kind of explained this one. some people have these powers called alters.. scryed is a hard series to sum up. lots of action.

RahXephon - from what i saw, kind of an eva clone... but with singing robots. im not a good person to give a summary on this since ive only seen the first 8 or so.

Vandread - fairly all around anime. takes place in space, in a time when men and women are at war with each other. a few men get captured on a ship of females.

Fruits Basket - basically there are a group of people who are cursed by the spirits of the chinese zodiac. they transform into that character whenever hugged by a member of the opposite sex. a normal girl, tohru, her mom dies, and she ends up living with a few of these characters. she finds out about the curse, obviously. its just funny.

Digi Charat - not really a static plot to this, just fucked up craziness. very spastic

Okojo-san - already explained

Chobits - in a world of humans and "persocons" (robots). normal guy, finds a persocon in the trash. she ends up being different from the other persocons. for most of the series it just involves him teaching her stuff.. gets a bit more serious later on.

ok yea, theres the descriptions of the ones i listed.

Whoa Sothis that's..massive!
Good job there

GTO

that series is the greatest thing ever invented

Posted by DJ_Bod on Sep-24-2002 21:13:

The only anime series I've ever seen is Outlaw Star. I thought it was good, so you all might want to check it out.

FYI, I have never really gotten into anime, but my roomate had it on, and i got hooked.

Posted by drinkyourmilk on Sep-24-2002 22:24:

Err.. I'm no huge fan of anime.. (Ok, I love it but I don't run out and buy it + I'm on 56k.. no download)
But my recommendations would be.. Akira, Ninja Scroll, Ghost in the Shell, Dragon Ball Z, Outlaw Star, The Gundam Series.. err.. That's all I really know

Posted by Lapinou on Sep-24-2002 22:38:

Noir. That's the one you need.

Posted by Trancewave on Sep-24-2002 23:00:

great post sothis. I've been meaning to get more into anime but didn't really know where to start for new releases and I feel like I have a lot of catching up to do. Only anime I've seen so far is
Princess Mononoke, Vampire Hunter D, Akira, Ghost in the Shell and a few others.

I really like stuff like anime movies like princess mononoke. Thanks for some of the recommendation, I'll go check out your hub right now but I don't have any anime though.

Posted by Sarcoman on Sep-24-2002 23:15:

Ive recently been looking at more anime DVDs as well. Looking to increase my collection, but have no idea where to start. Thanks for your post sothis, it will make my choices easier.

i have a few questions though

Is Neon Genensis Evangelion a series, or a movie, or both?

Is Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust anygood, or should i get the original?

I loved Ninja Scroll. Is there anything else you can suggest along those lines?

Thanks

is there a goood website somewhere similar to IMOB or blockbuster but for anime so I can read up on some new releases and get some more info?

Posted by sothis on Sep-25-2002 00:36:

trancewave:

there is a GREAT site, http://www.animenfo.com , which lists information on anime series. Sometimes the translations of the summary are a bit odd sounding (done by someone who isnt a native english speaker) but its GREAT for information on series, movies, etc. for new releases, check http://www.envirosphere.com . on my site, http://www.animeplanet.d2g.com, people post the triggers/irc channels for new eps so its a little more helpful than envirosphere on that aspect, but definitely not everything gets posted in my forum like it does on envirosphere

sarcoman: ive never seen ninja scroll so i cant give advice on that one. but berserk is a great swords type anime (really violent too). kenshin is another swordsman type

i havent seen the second VHD movie but the first one i thought was really boring (didnt even finish it).. its really old style animation.

as far as eva goes:

eva is a tv series, 26 episodes. 25 and 26 is the original tv ending (which SUCKS ASS). the fans got really mad at this so the creator made an alternate ending, titled "end of evangelion" (a movie). it is far more gory and upsetting... rumor has it he made this to piss everyone off because they complained

there is only one other eva movie, "Death and rebirth".. this is NOT worth getting, as all it is, the first half is a recap of the series, and the second half, is the first half of end of eva. so, dont get it. watch 1-26, then download end of eva, and watch it for an alternate ending.

it's japanese animation..

and its not for ages 5-10, they have some pretty mature shows. and im talking violence, nudity, language, etc

dont be fooled because it's animated.

Posted by rupert on Sep-25-2002 09:03:

I have seen the new Vampire Hunter D, its pretty good. Its up there with the great anime films ie Ghost in the shell, Princess Mononoke etc. I have never seen the original Vampire Hunter D made in the '80s. A mate has though and he said the new one is heaps better than the original.

Hi there...
I recommend .hack//SIGN ! It's a very good Anime about an online RPG.

Maybe Love Hina for those who like Ranma.. but it's not with fighting and stuff. Just a love-comedy.But very cool.

Then Dragonball Z I think if you saw just that Anime, and then others, DBZ isn't the best any longer... but however... I don't like it, since I saw other Anime like Neon Genesis Evangelion or M.D. Geist ... some Anime have shitty story, but contain lots of Blood ^^ These Animes (e.x. M.D.Geist) are for the schizophrenic people... eheheh

Another Anime genre is Hentai... it's anime, but a porno
btw: Hentai is japanese and means "perverse"

... now enjoy Anime !

(AND DON'T FORGET TO WATCH ANIME ONLY WITH JAPANESE SYNCRO)

I'm an excel saga addict

When I first saw it, I had the word "Akurossu" looping in my mind for all over the week

Akurosu all the way!

Posted by sothis on Sep-25-2002 15:56:

hack sign is so incredibly boring

i had high hopes for it in teh first few episodes... then every single episode is exactly the same.

look for tsukasa. talk about him for awhile. find him, talk briefly, he vanishes. talk some more. repeat. repeat. repeat.

such a good idea but SO BORING

Posted by Vamphyrric on Sep-25-2002 17:02:

Anyone seen Onegai Teacher? A few people recommended it to me. I'm not sure if I want to get it or not.

I have to agree with most of the stuff Sothis suggested. Juuni Kokki is too good. Go watch it now. Witch Hunter Robin I found boring at first but it really grew on me. RahXephon is an Evangelion clone but I still liked it.

Other anime I liked:
Trigun
Kenshin
Berserk
Nadesico
Record of the Loddoss War
Excel Saga

There's a lot more but thats all I can remember off the top of my head.
