Le Tour

Anyone here following Le Tour this year?

I'm really enjoying it, not only because our guys/teams are doing well after many years.
It's fantastic, because team play and tactics seems to be more important than ever, probably because individual differences are smaller.
Even the flat stages like today's make differences.

Nobody in the US has cared at all since Lance Armstrong stopped racing.

That's probably the same as no-body cared about soccer while in 2006 the U.S. with 18 million registered soccer players had more then we have inhabitants.

Nobody in the US cares about Soccer either unless they have half a chance at winning, which they never do. Probably half of those "registered soccer players" were 4 year old kids who could barely run. The population is over 300 million. 18 million still isn't very much.

And still, nobody cared about soccer in 2006 either. The only reason anybody cared about Lance Armstrong was the cancer story and the fact that he dominated every single year and you got to hear all the Frenchmen cry about it.

The number will be at bit higher if the illegal Mexicans were counted as well. My 65+ cab driver in Boston in 2005 had Portuguese roots, he still was watching European soccer, which surprised me actually. But I would say 18 million is a decent number. Problem with soccer is they just have one break, so that's a problem as you can't have commercials every 5 minutes.

The French still don't have anything to be happy about though...

Meh, the only people who really care here either played in high school or younger, or are from another country which actually cares about it. Although it has seemed to increase in popularity a bit recently.

Played soccer for 6 years when I was younger. Joining a coed league this summer with some friends. Soccer is fun to play, but I find it boring to watch (unless you are at a game and drunk).

Same with biking. I love to ride my bike, but I've never found the draw to watching bike races (again, unless its live and in person).

To me it's the opposite. Watching on television is so much more interesting, as live you can't keep up, both soccer as cycling. Well cycling is obvious as those at Le Tour ride 50 km/h, so that's just a flash.

Today's race was fucking awesome. And I'm not saying that because I'm Dutch, and the Dutch team and two Dutch riders have performed really well. I just love seeing factors like the wind play such a huge role here, that it totally turns the whole race upsidedownface.

And today's also was nice, not a Dutch guy near the front.
Amazing if you see how Matteo Trentin came in those last 100 meters. He was too tired to go sooner. At 400 meter he's wasn't even in a possible winning position.

Soccer is for fucking peasants.

That's kind of true. It's a poor persons game. That's why 3rd world countries can be decent at it.

Re: Illegal Mexicans.

I used to be against, to on-the-fence, to PRO-Growth immigration reform--but now I'm all for 'open-border policy' in America. Xenophobia on this issue, baffles me. The Hispanic-Americans who fruitpick while supporting large families are usually more American than your run-of-the-mill hick who collects governments checks and spends the entire day listening to Rush & Hannity.

Let me tell you something, most 'Americans' are the mutts of the White Race. Most of the very first immigrants to this nation were, and still are, criminals: the lower tier of British/European society. The House of Representatives receive daily calls from these entitled xenophobic americans asking to kill this immigration bill, because let's be honest, they are "afraid of the brown man having a more important role in society". That my friends, is not the American spirit. These good-looking, hard-working, and loyal people deserve to be a part of this country.

This country was founded by immigrants, and to hear these untermenschen cry foul because they are entitled under-performing mutts makes me want to puke.

What a shame Tejay van Garderen (US) didn't win today at Alpe d'Huez, if he did we would have been happy too. But 2nd still is something to be proud of.

Did anyone ride off a cliff or anything? That'd make it interesting.
