Why nobody should ever commit suicide

I know these are platitudes, but I've been despairing for the last year, and I think they somewhat help me get by, despite my seemingly purposeless existence. In case anybody else feels hopeless at any time, I thought I'd share this.

It's selfish
Things may always change for the better (This too shall pass)
What doesn't kill you may make you stronger
You're a unique individual; there will never be another person like you again
You'll always have something to offer
You have nothing to lose by continuing to live
There's purpose to your existence; a reason why you're here (don't argue)
There are people who are worse off than you are
You should always seek help - talk to someone - before making a move

how do you know I have nothing to lose by continuing to live? what if I take my own life to make other lives better, is it still selfish?

Whose lives? It's selfish because you probably have friends and family who would be aggrieved because of the act.

I'd normally defend someone's right to end their own life, and the "it's selfish" line usually makes me very angry - but, if you're thinking of ending your life yourself, get all the professional help you need (not sure you're seeing a therapist, for example) and by all means, don't just stick to these catchphrases... go do something awesome!

Actually, believing this is selfish would be very selfish of them. A person lost a life, for crying out loud, can you really compare any pain you feel to the despair that drove someone to suicide?!

All right, I'll stop

Can this also be applied to Hitler?

I'm sorry, I should've been more specific. It's selfish in the sense that you may be the only thing your parent(s) have left, and the ultimate purpose and joy of their existence. Suicide may steal the only thing your parent(s) have left, perhaps the sole reason for their own existence.

It's hard to do something awesome when you're in despair.

It's selfish to commit suicide? Oh waaah waaaah I don't have my friend anymore waaah waaah STFU! I've had friends commit suicide, several in fact, and it's far more selfish for you to want to have your friend around, if that means he or she has to live a life filled with little but pain. You really don't think people who take their own lives haven't thought about so in great detail before doing so? Sure, some of them may employ fallacious logic, and could be in need of friendly counseling, but some people are just doomed. Disallowing them to end their suffering is pretty fucking selfish.

That being said, whenever I feel down, things get a little too real and I'm in need of a pick-me-up, I just listen to this little piece of aural cocaine.

Is this sarcasm? I think I am, hence my despair.

I think that's bullshit. You're definitely doomed if you commit suicide.

Walk in on your dad hanging from a rope tied to your living room ceiling. Some people just don't get back from that, no matter how hardcore the counseling sessions get.
I haven't had shit like that happen to me, but I did see a cat pretty much off itself by jumping off the ledge of a 5th story window, actually it was my friend who killed himself's cat, had to run around on a sunday afternoon with a dying cat in my hands trying to find a vet because I was too much of a pussy to end its suffering / stupid enough to think he could've been saved. I probably should have tried to bond with my friend over a shared "suicide story" but I was too embarrassed over not having been watching the cat more closely. But he was usually rocking the window ledge on the other side of the apt, so I wasnt expecting him to jump ffs
You know, shit happen, and that shit stayed with me for months, switch out the cat with your family and 'jumping out window' with 'slaughtered by child soldiers'. Some things you can't get over. And if you'd rather kill yourself, than go insane and go on a killing spree, then you should be allowed to do so.
A real friend would be able to tell long before you actually went through with anything, unless you're taking impulse pills, and I mean, if you're doing drugs of those kinds you're already pretty much in the danger zone already.

But yeah, you know.. "Don't do it bro".

Kind of. Your recent thread frequency coupled with this topic could resemble hints of mania.

That's what the professional help would be for

That's what several previous psychiatrists said, but my current psych. says I don't present with symptoms of mania, despite my telling her that I don't feel at all like my "normal" self, and that most of my activities and thoughts/emotions are completely uncharacteristic of me.

Yeah, I thought about that, too. I'm making all these fucking lists. Good point, I'll mention it to my psych.

They don't give life insurance on suicides.

Posted by AlphaStarred on Oct-02-2013 20:06:

I just called my psych. and told her that I definitely feel like I'm manic, and that people on the internet think so too. I can't wait to tell her about all these lists I've been posting (you gotta admit, though, they were pretty cool threads). I really hope I can get back to my normal self soon, it's hell living like this. I've been on several different anti-psychotics, and nothing is helping. The only time something helped was when Risperdal made me a completely emotionless zombie for a week, and then I got back to normal. But I stopped the medication, and after only 2 days seemed to have induced another manic/hypomanic episode, which has been with me for several months now.

I'm sorry that you lost so many friends that way but then again when I think of you, I can't help to think you might have killed them.
