Jack Moss - Live @ Absorb, Leeds, 13.10.13
Here's a reconstruction of my live set from Absorb on Sunday afternoon. I was going to play 4-7 but we had quite a long soundcheck which ended up eating into the start of my set somewhat. I also played a short closing set, but a lot of people had gone home by that point and I was on the verge of collapse after a heavy weekend so I only played about 5 tunes before calling it a night. The event itself was satisfyingly successful, with some changes and tweaks we'd like to make to what's a pretty unorthodox formula for a music event. This first event was primarily a testing ground, but I'd say we got between 30-40 people through the door over the course of the afternoon, which were the kind of numbers we were looking to hit.
Anyway...

Really looking forward to giving this a listen once the download link is up
Okay!
Huge mix. Perfect soundtrack to play Uno to xD
You want a proper host? I can sort it for you tomorrow if you want?
I need any host at all, first, Dave. I'll sort it out tomorrow, and if you could provide a perma-link from there it would be much appreciated.
Awaiting download.

Looks like something I can get totally lost in... gonna take a listen to tomorrow @ work
Right, finally gave Sendspace a slap round the face and convinced it to host this. Here's the link: http://www.sendspace.com/file/vvp2dk
If anyone could transform that into a magical perma-link that'd be mega-appreciated, cheers.
Here you go!

Cheers Dave.
I've just realised I actually mixed the last track in quite differently on the night, but it's all uploaded everywhere now so fuck it... Pretty sure all the other transitions are very accurate.
This looks very promising.
Hey Jack, this was really nice and chill. I enjoyed listening to it at work.
The only transition I found to be unusually bad was the one at 39 minutes. And I can't even really blame you for that, it seemed like KalGan - Indigo Feelings could have been tough to mix out of if you didn't have the same DNBish beat structure in your next track.
Either way, I didn't really care about that and enjoyed the music. It was all very relaxing. I'm sure it went over well at the party, yes?
No, you can blame me for that. The next track is ASC - Datura, which is at a drum 'n bass tempo so I could have definitely made more of an effort to synch the tracks, but I'd decided to play it at the last minute after having Sam KDC's Synaesthesia cued up. I knew it would be a scruffy transition but I wanted to change direction away from drum 'n bass and I think the flow is okay despite that.
Well, this mix is certainly popular.
I am going to listen, but Im saving it for the train ride home from Manchester

Thanks, but I wouldn't expect you to travel so far just to hand out some flyers. If you are going to make the journey, I'd rather you attend one of our events: what we want are people who are there because they like the concept, not just because they're our mates.
And I just expected a little more interest - perhaps the length is too much for people.
I haven't had time to listen to this yet, unfortunately. Is definitely at the top of my list of things to check out, though.
More than halfway though and am really enjoying this so far. Excellent track selection, very pleasant chill-out atmosphere, and good mixing. Thanks for sharing.
Gave this a listen yesterday afternoon, really good stuff Jack.

Alright, time to finally type out some thoughts about this one.
First of all, congrats on the night. I do hope its working out for you. I was surprised to see the direction you seem to have taken for your live-mixing endeavors, since I always thought of you as more of an aspiring dancefloor DJ. Though I wonder what the reasons were I do applaud it.
I have yet to tackle the other live mix you posted but since this one seemed a bit more digestible scale-wise I dived straight in and have given it quite a few listens since because Ive really been enjoying it.
The starting bunch of tracks was a fine lot, sirenes in particular is a gorgeous track. The inclusion of baja was a good move, I mean why the hell not. The meaty percussion was welcome at that point. The Zargon tracks Im not so sure about though, theyre good tracks and they mix in well enough, but they also felt unnecessary. I know weve had the whole how chill is a D&B track discussion before but I just feel it set the wrong precedent here, you had already blown enough steam with baja. If I were to reengineer this mix Id probably go straight to datura, theres more synergy between those tracks and you probably wouldnt have had to build down so much afterwards.
The section following datura was a bit of a queer selection. It did harbor some of the more interesting moments though, both parks on fire and love cry were very nifty tracks. Reverse engineering had an unfortunate mix-in making it feel a bit redundant.
What follows however is by far the most memorable part of the mix. Some fantastic haunting ambient going into sol makes for a knee weakening section.
After that we enter a section containing what seems like some very densely layered turn of the millennium style dance-ish chill music. Not my cup of tea really, the hydroponic garden cut was good but what comes after was a bit forgettable. The flow from here on out however is extremely solid. We then reach a final turning point with another unmistakably solar fields track, after which a pleasant string of electronica closes it off.
Overall, it was a profound enough experience. It handles its length well, never becoming tiring or overly uninteresting. There is a sensible structure overall, the first half being more interesting music-wise were as the second half wins in the flow department. I feel it could have been a bit more adventurous, especially in the second half. Some more novelty, instruments or vocals. Anything that sticks really. The post-sol part of this mix seems a bit lacking in atmosphere at times as well.
Ah, unexpected bump. I actually had a relisten to this one recently and I think its pretty solid throughout. By Zargon I presume you mean KalGan, and I agree that those tracks are a bit of a weak point, mainly because they go on for so long. Id just discovered him and wanted to use some of his stuff, but I think 16 minutes or so of samey music is a bit unnecessary. Another thing that stood out playing these tracks on a good system is just how fucking bassy modern drum n bass is, even the chilled out stuff. You call the mix into Reverse Engineering unfortunate but Love Cry simply stops dead at the end of the phrase, and the only way I could think to get out of it was to play something that opens with a big wash. So yes, the track selection there was somewhat functional.
The bit in the middle that was your favourite part... I was going to play more of that stuff and have quite an extended mid-section in a moody, sombre vein but the vibe of the room was starting to feel distinctly morbid and a big group of people walked in during the Pascal Savy track, so I decided to take things back up ahead of schedule. In a room full of people chatting and socialising, that haunting sound doesnt really work. I do think this kind of set benefits from a bit of darkness to offset the fluffy ambient prettiness I tend to veer towards, but I also dont want to turn it into Music For Graveyards. Im thinking of playing some gnarly glitchy stuff in future sets to try and create some darker contrast without totally flatlining the atmosphere. Its all a learning curve.
I personally was really pleased with the section book-ended by the Solar Fields tracks, which is the psy-chill section in my eyes. The really soft, rounded bass of those tracks sounded great on the system and these tracks transport my minds eye to the hyperreal, ultra-vivid trippy future garden, to borrow a phrase from Planet B.E.N. But thats the subjectivity of music made to tickle your imagination, I suppose.
Thanks for the detailed review, as well.
