King 2013 End of the year best lists, including RA

Its beginning already! Top 100 DJs just published by RA:

Top 100 DJsI

Thoughts? Dixon at number 1 and Tale of Us at 2 are surprising slightly.

EDIT: Please post any lists and your own lists in this thread so we can keep it all in one place. I didnt vote but if I had to, Klock was the best DJ for me. Saw him live and loved it. One of the best sets ive seen in a while.

Turns out Ive seen exactly 11% of that list in the last twelve months or so, which is more than I expected actually. I think the way theyve organised it (users could only vote for DJs theyd marked as attending on RA itself from 2013) is going to skew the list not only towards DJs whove played a lot of gigs in the last year (which is, of course, inevitable in this kind of poll) but also towards DJs whove played at lots of RA-affiliated events, which is a nice way of drumming up hype for DJs you can regularly buy tickets for on... Resident Advisor. Cynicism aside, its not a bad list really, a good gauge of whos hot in the house/techno circuit, although Im surprised theres almost no drum n bass, or bass music generally, in there, as RA do give it a fair share of coverage. It also features two of the DJs I enjoyed seeing the most this year: Garnier and Weatherall.

Had a good laugh when I saw these quotes in a recent King Unique interview:

"What do you think of the DJ Mag Top 100?"
-KU: "Marketing exercise for excitable 12 year olds full of sugar"

"What do you think of the RA Top 100?"
-KU: "Marketing exercise for socially-anxious 19 year olds full of shit"

Shit where's the psy-trance?

never really heard any mixes from this Dixon guy, must check out his stuff

I've only really seen four people on that list this year (if you don't count hanging around for 20 minutes as having seen someone) - Klock, Rdhd, Seth Troxler b2b Craig Richards.

Dixon being #1 isn't all that surprising when you consider that Innervisions had all the big hits in the house sphere this year. Just take a look at the RA top 100 charted tracks in 2013.

Happy for that Rdhd making #38 on his first entry, been a supporter of the Dystopian crew for quite a while. He's good, I think his labelmate Alex.Do is an even better DJ though. Seen him twice (and hopefully next week) and both times were next to perfect which pretty much never happens when I see a techno DJ and I've seen a looot of techno DJs this year. Other than those two my favorite sets this year were from Marcel Fengler, Ed Davenport, DJ Pete, Peter Van Hoesen, Answer Code Request, Don Williams b2b Redshape and Henning Baer none of which have made the top 100 which means that techno is still underground?

"What hopefully results is a list of global relevance."

It's a myopic poll voted upon by a select few registered users on your website, utilizing an events calender many aren't even aware of. That's rather far from 'global relevance', methinks.

Wow what a fucking sausage-fest.

Nicolas Jaar at #1 again

Surprised to see Recondite in the top 10. I haven't seen anyone else on that list but I've seen him three times this year somehow.

Posted by enydo on Dec-11-2013 16:53:

Nicolas Jaar needs to fuck off forever.

Posted by SYSTEM-J on Dec-11-2013 18:17:

Good to see Max Cooper in there. I saw him almost by accident in Barcelona when I wandered into a second room and realised he was playing in there along with Applescal. Sat on a bar stool and mellowed out to their sets.

Hot Natured, on the other hand, are shit.

Posted by enydo on Dec-11-2013 19:06:

bahahahaha that Hot Natured "live group" is so fucking shit.

Do more cocaine boys, maybe you'll produce a heater~

A little surprised there's no Orbital, as they headlined the Resident Advisor WHP night 12 months ago and are a better live act than anyone on this list.

Posted by enydo on Dec-11-2013 20:10:

While I have not been able to catch her live outside of her couple boilerroom sets, it's sorta a giant pity Laurel Halo isn't up there.

The readers of RA must be the whitest, most boring group ever. Christ.

This too. Been a few years since I saw them but they fucking destroy.

RA's top 20 labels list - http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1970

Livity Sound at #1 feels a bit weird but im so glad fucking LIES didn't make #1 again. Looking at this list and the Juno one aswell it seems like experimental or weird definitely has been the big thing this year, almost all of these labels are known to release weird of offbeat music.

not really surprising at all - dixon has had a massive year. innervisions put out fire all year and he's been playing better than ever. his 5 hour set in brooklyn at output a few months ago was probably the set of the year in NYC - everyone left absolutely BLOWN away. never experienced music like that - truly in his own level. i remember 3 hours into his set turning to my friend and just telling her ".. i haven't noticed one transition the entire time.." he also had the best essential mix of the year, by far imho.

TofU have a bit to go with DJing but productions are big time. probably had 2 of the biggest 10 tracks of the year with another earth and primitive people remix.

polls are just polls, popularity contests.

and live acts - why the hate on nico jar? he is so talented and really blends different genres seamlessly.

the other great live acts i've caught this year - john talabot (SO good, with pional), bonobo, james blake.

great year all around.

No juju & jordash on the live list is weird, would have expected them to be near the top.

Can't say I'm surprised with Dixon being #1, I saw him a few years ago and he was incredible.

Posted by wotyzoid on Dec-14-2013 02:16:

How is anyone surprised at the top two spots? Dixon's and Tale Of Us's touring schedules were hardcore as shit. I missed Dixon when he came to Output but I caught Tale Of Us on Holloween and I could tell they were gonna shoot up a few spots. Big tracks, hype, strong sets where ever they may go; that's pretty much the formula right?

I'm more surprised at the people that didn't make it at all. Deetron, Roman Flugel and Julio Bashmore come to mind.

Because everything you just said could be written about a dozen or more other DJs.

Actually I am also wondering how the fuck he didn't make it.

Absolutely amazing DJ. Had the pleasure of seeing him DJ... definitely a must see.

Posted by LoveHate on Dec-14-2013 09:28:

haven't seen dixon live, but been playing the shit out of his em, no complaints with him being number 1.

Posted by DJ NyX on Dec-15-2013 05:59:

there are some many names on that list that just feed from success long in the past.

Not hype wise, I don't think so.

Clearly not everyone agrees with you. I certainly think the likes of Eats Everything and Maya Jane Coles have had absolutely massive hype this year.
