Yes sir! Thanks for the permalink, as always, Sushi. I did myself a huge favor this week and treated myself to a pair of Sony MDR-7506 cans as a birthday gift to myself. Wow. I can't believe I waited this long to get a pair. Listening to 23 Redux now, and it's even more lush than before with the new cans.

Always been a headphone-centric mix this series, may have to treat myself now after that recommendation...

I'll be honest most of the time I've listened to these mixes are at work, got them burbling away in the background, maybe just turned up a smidgen.

When listening to them on headphones though it's completely different, so many beautiful little intricacies, it's as though I'm listening to a whole new mix.

Particularly like the track that comes in around 36 mins. So cool. I don't know exactly what it is about it, but every time I hear it, it just gets me. I think maybe the rhythm of the vocals or something?

How long do you spend sourcing the music for each of these? You find some absolutely magic stuff.

Often wondered the same thing myself. I find that I don't have much success stumbling upon random good tracks.

That's Yumi & the Weather - Not Again (kiwi remix). One of my favourite tracks from 2013. First heard it on Wisternoff's radio show and was immediately grabbed by the marching bass, and the rhythm as you mention. It's rare when you find a track that makes you rewind to the start straight away after finishing, but I did that twice the first time I heard this!

Oh and to answer this...it's basically a massive time-drain to find all the tracks. Hours, hours and hours really. Which I appreciate most people don't have to spare. I guess the best bet is to search far and wide, not such traditional mediums either - there's so much great music used in art projects/films/animation/TV etc. Here's some of the sources I use:

Beatport - important to get all your filters in place, following all the specific labels and artists. Otherwise you could easily miss a track with the amount released.

Mix shows - Always have quite a few podcasts lined up each week, and not the poppy ASOT or VONYC but others.

Soundcloud - follow all your favourite artists, enjoy bouncing between profiles. Frequent free downloads here.

Bandcamp - It's great too.

Label websites - Good to keep track of future releases and general news. N5MD Records have a great website for example, with full length samples.

Spotify - I've got loads of music set up in playlists on there.

Gigs/Galleries/documentaries - Great source of original music. Again you have to put in the work, but there's nothing like seeing an arty film and hearing an amazing track, then finding out where you can buy it from. Last year I was lucky enough to go to quite a few gigs (Ulrich Schnauss, Active Child, Au Palais, Francois and the Atlas Mountains) and even though I don't play most of that music in my sets it sets off new tangents of inspiration as it has that lush aesthetic. You really can't beat live music too.

Oh and computer games too, the soundtracks are getting better and better.

YouTube - There's some great users who set up whole channels dedicated to a particular sound.

Let me know if you want any links or anything. There's some fantastic music out there, it's just frequently hidden under a tonne of cookie cutter junk.

I know it sounds pretty cliche but even TV shows like Top Gear pay really close attention to the music used and they play some pretty obscure stuff there too! Whoever it is that picks the music does an amazing job IMO. There are websites dedicated to tracking down music used on the show!
