2014.03.28-2014.03.30 [DAY] Ultra Music Festival 2014

Overly expensive festival but the lineup is at least pretty damn sick.

There shouldn't be too many complaints from ANYBODY regarding the lineup.

I just wonder what sort of people are going to show up aside from kids suffering from affluenza (and we all know what kind of music they listen to...). I mean, why book all these cool, trendy underground DJs like Blond:ish, Fur Coat, Green Velvet, Dubfire, Lee Burridge, etc. I know of exactly zero people who listen to that kind of music that shelling out the money for Ultra. Everybody I've talked to is simply doing all the other parties that are part of WMC.

Only way I go is if the thing doesn't sell out, the reseller market falls apart and tickets are going for $350 and under. Even then I'll most likely make it a one day deal and sell the other 2 days. I mean, honestly, seeing the likes of Cirez D, Marco Carola, Loco Dice, Carl Cox, Dubfire, etc in the Carl Cox tent never gets old.

I wonder who's gonna be booked for ASOT arena, curious.

EDIT: i know for a fact one of em is gonna be Andrew Rayel.

I was lucky enough to score an Ultra ticket at early bird price. I was mass spamming the fuck out of the website. If the lineup had sucked I would have just sold my ticket and made my money back plus $200 more. Not bad. That Carl Cox tent has me by the balls though. It's always a great time. Cirez D better be playing there...

I think its back to one. The pushback they got last year from doing that second weekend was pretty bad.

in the meeting last year the city left it open to do two years in the future but the meeting would have to come late like late December or early January. Ultra wants a second weekend just because they only have to pay for the stages to go up once

The two weekend thing was amazing, I went both and the first was better by far. So much room to roam around but the 2nd weekend was a clusterfuck!

Posted by diabloargentino on Dec-18-2013 21:42:

same headliners as every year lol.

can't believe candy ravers pay $500 to see the same DJs as always.

definitely some cool names there though.. tale of us, adriatique, solomun, etc.

I want to see new world punxs!

With no second week, and the fact that this thing isn't sold out, tells me that Ultra made a mistake charging $500 for tickets. Bad time for a festival to make mistakes, with all the competition these days. Mysteryland looks interesting, Tomorrowworld was supposedly awesome, and then you have EDC whom has been stepping their game up as well.

For $500, the experience better be far and away better than anything else that is offered in the country. I don't know if that's true. And honestly, $500 is just too much for ANY festival, I don't care how badass it is or who is playing. It's just too much damn money to fork out to see a glorified light show and dudes mixing electronic music in a massive sea of kandi kids.

But then again, I'm reminded of how insignificant electronic music is compared to the world of football and basketball and how much money is involved at those events. I spent $190 on a pair of tickets for a Magic game at the beginning of the season (as much as I love pro basketball, these games usually nowhere near the experience of a good music festival). It's all relative to your disposable income, I guess.

the Carl Cox arena and other underground stages will be the shit this yr....so excited!!!

oh wait, im not going

Ultra hasnt touched on their production in a long time. Stage wise, festival vibe wise, food, etc.
EDC is doing so because of the ID&T influence.
But ID&T will win no matter what - unless the acquisition changes that and they go with simplicity and no stage decor or festival vibe - and simply just book the djs like Ultra does.
Sorry Ultra, flames on a metal truss stage doesnt cut it, or large tents with the same air filled stars hanging down.
Not going.

Have you been to ultra lately, the mega structure is the best enclosed stage I have been to at any festival, so much so that EDC tried to replicate it this past year

From the sound of you talking about the stairs you haven't been in 3 years. It's much better now

Not true, Ultra's production is definitely top notch the last couple of years.

The production does get better every year. 2013 was best year yet. Agreed that it's not worth $500 though.

I went this yr and Production wise i was fuckin blown away.. Carl Cox arena is AMAZING, wish i could go just for that..mainstage was sick as well as others.

Layout & Crowd crowd control is a different story tho

You have to look at it like this, it will eventually sell out and if they dont get approval for the second week they needed that $500 a ticket to compete with the production they did last year. Last year they invested two weeks worth of money in to what was basically one show worth of production. The setup and tear down cost a lot of money and it give them a better opportunity to provide more if they only have to pay that fee once. This year with possibly one weekend in order to have the same production they needed to step up ticket prices to make the show comparable with last year because trust me, last years production did not come from one weeks worth of money. Most of the festivals spend the entire ticket price if not more on talent and production and make their money off concessions and other add-ons which is still tons of money.

Apparently GA tickets are already at a limited level of availability.

There isn't a single thing unique or exciting about the production at Ultra, It's as generic as most large festivals short of Insomniac now and the ID&T stuff. The mainstage is just a giant Ultra symbol with flames, the Carl Cox stage is just the generic mega-structure that festivals have been using for like four years now, and overall the venue is ridiculously small.

This. I have been to Ultra all these years and just fed up. In my opinion those who have not been to an ID&T event will say Ultras production is mind blowing. and all the changes they do, etc. Talk all you want until you really see a festival. Sorry but with all the money Ultra has, they simply put on a show with booked djs and the same basic setups as every year. No change towards a festival direction. Feels like a rock concert for EDM.

Posted by The Dark NINJA on Dec-28-2013 19:53:

I was never a fan of ultra's productions and never impressed.

Posted by diabloargentino on Dec-29-2013 17:19:

ultra is cool but it's just like every other festival in the US. same line up as the others, same crowd, same production. at the end of the day, it's just DJs on a big platform with lasers and lights and LED screens lol.

i am a bit impressed that they are bringing a lot of live acts this year. definitely cool, although i'd prefer to see acts such as massive attack at an intimate venue with real fans as opposed to the yolo noobs. and it is cool that they're bringing in newer talent (for example, there is clearly going to be a diynamic label stage since they have solomun, HOSH, adriatique).. but i'd rather pay $20 to see them at their own label party at like treehouse than $500 to have to see them at ultra.

big festivals are definitely fun once in a while and we know how to make the best out of them but outside of movement in detroit, i don't think any are truly worth their price.

ARTICLE: "is the irrational exuberance of edm ticket pricing setting in?"

http://www.elektrodaily.com/news/20...ing-setting-in/

decent read.

So I emailed Ultra asking about single day tickets, and they replied stating that we would be swapping our 3 day pass for a weekend bracelet to wear all three days. They also stated that they would not be offering single day tickets or wristbands at all this year (yes I know they haven't done this for a few years now). My question is do you guys know of any other ways to get in, besides paying for all three. I am only going for 1 day due to work?? Would greatly appreciate any help!

Posted by The Dark NINJA on Dec-30-2013 16:16:

So your saying you want to get in illegally ?
