my business was broken into early this morning: COR you have a mission

Here are the facts
1. homeless guy (i believe) breaks store front glass door.
2. steals about 50 in food.
3. door will cost about $550.
4. have alarm system and cameras.
5. guy is quick; in and out in less than 3 minutes
6. have a clear view of his face, clothes, etc.

short of closing or moving what could i do to prevent this from occurring again. i need ideas.

bonus question: would you try to find the guy?

Get a door that isn't made of glass?

Install shutters, like most shops?

Posted by Lira on Dec-27-2013 01:24:

Make it explicitly clear you'll share food by the end of the day. Install shutters. Let him be, no one got hurt. If you must, make him pay somehow (make him fix it or something). I'd write it off as an unintended Christmas present.

Get better insurance.

Tesla coils?

Sucks, man.
And it's xmas. Let the guy be.
I mean, maybe give out the pic to the police,
or maybe to other store owners in the area, and tell
them to be on the lookout in case the guy is casing their joint.
The guy is probably so poor off that he's likely to be a repeat-offender, so let the state pay for his meals? US prison system is whack tho.

This is illegal; cue Latin outrage.

Explicitly is redundant and unnecessary.

Something's telling me glass installation isn't something a random person can do let alone a hobo.

umm no. 500 $ ? jesus.

Crack addict. Will happen again unless you have proper security. I mean 500$ for a theft is pretty fucling good.

the facts

police will not give a fuck and if they did, you run a store, too many prints.
Picture mean nothing without prints .
You go after them, well guess what they have lots of. Time.

You lucked out.

make your place looks less inviting than the other stores. Crime isn't random. They chose you because you were liquid dancing and you probably had slack security compared to everyone else. The only thing you can do is make it less of a target. If they really want to rob you, they will. So just do what your peers are doing and then more.

Not the whole thing, obviously, but there is something that even a hobo could do.

it is amazing what hunger will make people do.

a lower deductible on your insurance would be best imo.

Ahh! Cool your temper! *soothing congas*

It's illegal for restaurants to hand out food they would otherwise throw away, if that is what you mean. Not everywhere, but in most places, I believe. It poses a potential public health risk or something like that; not to mention that the one time a drunken bum gets projectile diarrhea from your 16-hour old custard cronut, he's going to sue the shit out of you because this is America and we're all just terrible.

I'm pretty sure it's the same over here in Oz.

I don't think it is, or if it is it's not common practice. Restaurants aren't allowed to give away expired food (aka use by) but they can give/sell best before food. My old work used to give me lots of food they hadn't sold by the end of the day all the time.

No, I meant giving food to homeless people or whatever. They can give staff food, of course that's fine.

http://www.health.vic.gov.au/foodsafety/faq.htm
www.health.vic.gov.au/foodsafety/bus/donating-food.htm

Information is found there. TLDR version:
-Must comply with food safety laws (not left out for more than 4 hours etc)
-Not much else

It doesn't say anything about donating food to individuals though. It might need to be done via a charity organization. Or alternatively the same regulations might apply. I've definitely been to cafe's where they've given away extra stuff at the end of the day, they might not have been paying attention to the laws though.

Posted by Sushipunk on Dec-31-2013 01:48:

Interesting. What I heard may have just been bullshit then. I can't for the life of me remember the source, either.

Posted by on Dec-31-2013 04:24:

It's a little surprising that a homeless person would break in for food. In my experience these type of ppl get all the food they need from government programs or charitable organizations. That's why when they either pan handle or steal to pawn the purposes is to raise cash to buy alcohol/drugs. Once you understand this you realize there isn't the demand for restaurant left overs you might have thought.
