Saving samples in a Live project folder.

I'm about to start a couple of collaborative projects using my new found love Live 9

When using Logic there's an option to save all used audio/samples within the save folder, but I can't see a way to do this in Live.

Is it possible, or do I have to manually move all the samples I use over to the project folder?

Actually, what are your thoughts on disableton? I'm thinking of switching it up as I may need a dual platform sequencer and it's either Cubie or Live....

If I remember it's something like file/collect all and save....

Well to be honest 9.1 has been a bit of a revelation for me.

I tried versions 7 and 8 I think, and I never got much past opening a new project and trying to choose something before it crashed or did something stupid.

So far 9.1 has been rock solid apart from crashing when I tried to render a project containing the Virus, although I'm sure that's just a setting I've not discovered yet.

I've been using Cubase for years, and more recently Logic, but I'm going to ditch the Mac Mini I'm using and wait until I can get the Mac Pro, so in the meantime I also wanted a cross platform DAW to do collabs with and use on my 2nd PC DAW (because I only have 1 cubase license).

If you're using Logic now, Cubase would be the obvious choice as the workflow is basically identical.

BUT

I'm really liking the Live way of doing things for dance tracks. It's SO fast, and the workflow is a real boon to creativity for me now.

There are some obvious flaws such as the mixer still being Garageband basic, but then how much do you actually need for dance tracks. The routing isn't quite as comprehensive as something like Cubase either, but again it's enough for teh darnce.

The way it handles samples is miles and miles ahead of either Logic or Cubase. I guess you can do the same things in the other DAW's, but Live makes it simple and intuitive.

If I were recording audio or doing some score/ambient/real music I'd still use Cubase 100% though.

It's good to have both though.

Just wondering are you peeps using the 64 bit version of Live or the 32 bit version?
I dont find 9.1 to be that stable, im using the 32 bit version

64 here.

One frustration is that Live can only look at one VST plugin folder so I can't point at my 32 bit folder anyway. In any case, it doesn't automatically bridge like Cubase does.

cool thanks man - i think i might install the 64 bit version and see if its any better than currently

agree with you on workflow and anything audio related - sometimes you just need to get stuff down as quickly as possible before you lose the idea of what you wanted to do - in that respect its pretty savage

64 bit and so far is stable.

I'm using 32bit here, it's fine (most of the time)

Using crack over here for warped dj sets, pretty stable over here.

Fuck it. I'm going to give it a try.

Do you guys use 64 or 32 bit? I'd prefer 64 due to the extra ram headroom but the dude does not abide flakey DAW's so I'd appreciate any feedback.

Agreed, it's just spot on for getting shit down.


So far 64 bit has been 100% stable for me.

The only time I get a hiccup is when I try and render a track with the Virus being used in project, and I think it's when i'm not rendering in realtime so it makes sense. In a couple of weeks of use I've not had one other crash so far.

That's using 9.1 btw.

Thanks Geoff. Are you using it on the mac or your PC?

I haven't used it yet, but from the vids, the bit it looks like I'm going to struggle with is the arrange view and all the little folders.

If I can force myself not to gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon just form the sheer ugliness of it, I may well end up liking it

I wouldn't bet on it if you're really used to sequencing in other DAWS like Pro Tools and Logic. Personally I never really got on with Live's arrangement view much, but the session view working with clips is where it really comes into it's own. Though I'm still using live 8, so maybe some of the things that annoyed me with arrangement view may have been improved with version 9. I'm not really using it enough now to warrant upgrading to 9 myself.

I still like to use live for clip/loop editing but I've moved over to using reaper [ducks for cover] for sequencing due to the PDC issues when recording and that I've developed a nice workflow for linear sequencing with that program. It's not perfects either, but has been great for my own productivity.

Live's drum racks are pretty nifty though.

Lives arrangement view isn't really that dissimilar to that of Logic or Cubase. It's a little bit more abstract and geared to working with clips and loops, but you can still create a midi clip set to a region.

I haven't come across any timing issues yet, and I know that a number of people are using Live to start and finish a track so perhaps it's just an issue in a certain scenario. One thing I do like is the simplicity with which you can create and effect a midi part and immediately bounce it to audio. This is a pain in the ass in Cubase for example.

The drum rack IS genius. I especially like the way you can insert FX per pad.

This plus curved automation is key in L9. I have been using it since Beta and have no hang ups whatsoever.
And as tehlord mentioned, bouncing is very easy and suggested. I always tend to not follow this rule and use like 20 midi tracks and then before I know it my CPU is 65% and then live takes a hit...so yes, bouncing is suggested.
Using Jbridge it allows 32bit plugins in 64bit hosts, 64bit plugins in 32bit hosts, or even bridging 32bit plugins to 32bit hosts, allowing to overcome the memory limitations of a single 32bit process.
Using Arrange view is soooo much nicer as you are able to see the wav in all its peeks and lows and centering in on those notes are very vital. You will end up loving this after you get over the hump

To be fair its never been as good. I've been using since 7 and 9.1 is pretty solid. Ableton has been bashed a lot over the years and I think most of it was quite harsh, but yeah it has had its share of problems.

Its interesting reading how people are using it.. I do everything in arrangement view, never session view I can't see the point.
I don't use drum or instrument racks either. I drop samples on midi tracks and it opens up a simpler, from there I just hot swap if I need to change or browse samples. If its drums I end up grouping them all together anyway but I just prefer to give everything its own track.

As for the mixer, you can add a txt file if you want it to display each channels fx/devices. I have this enabled myself but tbh its really no use
