New Tutorial Website Coming Soon!

Hi Guys,

I am currently creating a New Tutorial Website.

The site will be For All Genres and all things music production.

There will be free as well as paid videos on the site and thats why i am writing this post primarily.

I am looking for a few things that should be able to help everyone.

Firstly I am getting together a list of videos that people would like to see. There are no genre restrictions, VST Instrument restrictions, Plugin restrictions or DAW restrictions so if you are looking for something please let me know.

Secondly I would like to offer those of you who can make video tutorials the opportunity to do so for this site. (Written tutorial will also be considered)

I am looking for both free video tutorials and paid video tutorials (I will pay anyone who creates videos for the new site on a 60/40% split in your favour).

I have a large following on the internet and plan to take advantage of this so your videos will get as wide a scope as possible.

Anyway if you have any suggestions, would like to be involved or anything else to add please let me know here.

many thanks,

Mark

I am interested in anything sound design related, especially for more popular styles of electronic music. I'll send you a message about maybe writing some basic tutorials.

Cool idea, Mark. Looking forward to seeing how this goes. I keep thinking about doing some tutorials, so maybe I'll try to contribute something.

You live in Phuket? that seems like fun

i'd be happy to see yet another "making a track in one hour" video as those seem to help the most, you can make an uplifting trance one but it would be nice to have one on Anjunadeep's brand of house or JOOF's brand of Trance, not a lot of those online it seems.

I am sure i can find someone (or even do it myself) that can make these videos - I am on it.

Hope vids will be 1080p.
Don't consider it a "detail", it is actually important.
Make a proper intro, build it the right way.

Good luck.

TranceElevation - all my videos are 720p minimum with intros, outros, write ups, high quality audio. however all of this must be done within reason so unless they are video courses which are for purchase they wont be 1080p as there is simply no need.

Thanks guys, please keep the ideas coming and dont be shy, if you think you can contribute then please get in touch

Now that i think about it, the most important thing is that you keep everything short yet coherent, i know its a tough thing to do but i sometimes find myself watching a guy explaining a thing or two for 10 minutes when he can do it in 2 minutes.

Posted by DJ RANN on Feb-04-2014 12:06:

Hey Mark, sounds like a good idea and glad that you're making it happen.

I think 720p is fine; 1080p can take too long to load and often skipping/ffwding is difficult due to the hi res.

One thing that often bugs me (not that I've ever seen you do this) is when there's unnecessary talk / rambling - often comes from people liking the sound of their own voice. Even SFLOGICNINJA has quite a bit of this in some of his videos (like the one where he can hear his wife cooking food in the background (so assumes you can but can't) and keeps referencing how hungry he is an interrupting the flow). If other people submit to you, please keep it on topic and concise - I for one will stop watching when they start wasting my time.

One other thing I hate to see is when someones making a track, they go through hundreds of presets to get the sound. While I like to see exploration, one 1hour vid I watched the guy spends 9 mins just going through presets for one sound. He didn't basically have a clue what he was looking for and although it can be interesting to sometimes see what happens, a tutorial should be a how to, not just an over the shoulder of someone fucking about.

One thing I love is when vids have the ability to change the playback speed; I prefer to watch tutorial vids in x3 or x4 speed.

One other thing would be nice is to standardize the totorials as much as possible. In that I mean, same format, recorded the same way with same audio quality and level. It means you can go through several at a time without having to constantly change your viewing settings.

In terms of content, I love to see vids on grove production. So laying down a beat/perc, and then maybe a simple hook and/or bass. Can watch them all day.

I wish I had time to contribute but I just know I can't do it. If you want more engineering things, I can edit a few of the in depth ones I've done on TA (like monitor calibration and gain staging etc) but other than that I can't be much help

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Viber - I am creating a bible of sorts tyo try and sort this stuff out so no more than 15 minute long videos is 1 thing i am putting into place.

DJ RANN - I have always tried to keep on topic, especially in paid for tuts. I have been known to loose it and go into a world of my own, completely forgetting i was making a tut before but thats was in the beginning, now it doesnt really happen.

I will also be making sure videos are edited properly with no "wifes cooking" in the back ground and annoyances like "patch hoping".

I would be happy to get any videos you have done, whatever they are on as i am looking to make it a non specific site, by that i mean everything music production/technology not only 1 genre/daw etc so anything you can offer will be deeply appreciated.

Many thanks guys and keep the ideas coming, i am open to all suggestions.

thanks

Mark

Totally agree with RANN's concern. It's so annoying to watch/listen to someone who is fumbling around trying to figure out what they're doing while the vid is rolling. And, it's bad enough when amateurs do it on youtube, but it's far more embarrassing when supposed "pros" do it on a paid service like MacProVideos (most are great, but a few are gutwrenchingly amateur). I would assume that the biggest difference between amateur and pro tutorials is preparation and script. Amateurs who wing it in real-time usually end up with excessively long vids with long periods of the narrator fumbling around doing nothing. I would guess that most pros go through a dry run or two, keep some sort of script (on paper, or at least in their mind) to keep them on task, know exactly where their resources (e.g., samples) are to keep fiddling to a minimum (nobody wants to watch you navigate endlessly around folders on your f'ing computer!), and know exactly what the outcome is going to sound like.

I'd love to hear how you approach this, Mark (and anybody else).

Posted by SoundMagus on Feb-10-2014 14:55:

Cryophonic - my personal way of doing this is i record what i am doing onscreen, and my voice, all in real time.

The main difference is in the editing, most novices (in video tut creation) will not take the additional time to edit the videos which can and does take longer than making the video itself.

However i have been making videos for over 10 years now and i know my subjects pretty well.
What i have seen is that a lot of people who make videos dont even know their subject very well so their videos are disjointed, full of ums and awws, lots of screwing around trying to find stuff they should be familiar with etc. This makes for bad videos.

Also there are other ways of creating videos, you can make the video first then write a script by watching the video after you have made then record your vocal audio in last, this is a very precise way to do it but i feel it lacks interaction with the tutorial itself and hence never use it.

At the very least these things should be considered if you wish to make a good tutorials:

1. Knowledge of Subject
2. Knowledge of Video Editing Software
3. Plan what you intend to show
4. Knowledge of Good Recording practices (good mic, Ducking etc)
5. Video settings (HD, Format)
6. Length of Videos
7. Relivance

If you have these things in place you have a rock solid solid starting point for a great video tutorial.

You need a better looking website IMO. I'd be concerned putting my credit card details into your current one unless someone had recommended it to me.

Should be able to find a designer on oDesk, Elance or one of those places for a few dollars an hour.

echosystem - thats why this thread is called "New Website Coming Soon".

I am currently building new website and new shop etc, my web designer has gone fishing and not returned so its all down to me now.

Tutorials on how to produce Trance music from scratch for newbies would be amazing, the video tutorials out on the internet currently are not up to par.

Topics could include arrangement, melodies, mixing etc. Just everything that you would need to make a Trance song from the beginning to end.

@thefaper - thats doable for sure
