GK Melbourne REVIEW THREAD!
Well, where do I start? It was a trance lovers paradise. Me and my posse made an entrance at around 12:30, and headed straight to the Channel V DJ comp, hoping to spot a few TAs along the way. No sightings recorded, tho. Ducked into the comp to see a friend of a friend play an awesome set (finishing with Out Of The Blue), but ultimately lose. There was some discontent among the punters
Headed to the main arena and it looked fantastic. Similar kind of setup to PvD earlier this year, but with less money spent on the DJ booth and more on lasers and water-walls .
Oh, yeah, and the sound. So often party-goers down here in sunny Melbourne complain about the poor sound. Well, on this occasion, it was clear, and really loud. I couldn't fault it.
Hadn't intended to see much of Judge Jules, but ended up staying for the whole set. He played a fair bit harder than the other two (AvB a& J00F), but whacked in enough tuneage to keep me there (Rank 1 - Awakening [Cosmic Gate Remix] was the highlight of the set for me.) Sorry, can't remember anything else Jules played.
Unless Jules finished with Ligaya -- or did Armin mix in?
It was getting to that time of the morning (3am) when Armin was due to hit the decks, and 5000 people were at fever pitch -- not to mention the TA community front and centre! I won't beat around the bush here, folks; Armin was amazing.
It stands as the single best trance set I've seen. Now, I didn't see PvD in 2001, which was apparently great, but it would have had to have been something incredibly special to beat this. Tiesto earlier this year was great, PvD in May was a little disappointing, but Armin was something else altogether. This was a DJ at the top of his game, and he worked it like nothing else. Armin's animation behind the decks indicated that he was loving every second of it; God knows we were...
Some of Armin's set highlights (to be improved, no doubt, by stipsy):
Solar Stone - Seven Cities (AvB Remix)
Pulser - Cloudwalking (Beatpushers Remix)
Fingers Burnt - For A Devil
Armin van Buuren - Sunburn
DJ Tiesto - Obsession
Energy 52 - Cafe Del Mar (Marco V Remix)
Riva - Time is the Healer (AvB Remix)
Prime Mover - The Weapon (Grinder Remix)
Push - Strange World (2000 Remake)
Cape Town - Pitstop
Matt Darey - Moody
Darren Tate & Jono Grant - Let the Light Shine In
Warrior - If You Want Me
Gouryella - Ligaya (Hiver & Hammer Remix)
Perpetuous Dreamer - The Sound of Goodbye
Edited: cheers to mikkaa and others for refreshing my hazy, scattered memory...
And he finished with Perpetuous Dreamer - The Sound of Goodbye; one of my all time favourite tracks
More to come when I get back from this wedding this evening *shudder*
omfg
strange world 2000 remake
if he plays this in perth ill cream my self. Sounds wicked, I cant wait!!!
dude! he played the sound of goodbye!?!? fuck yes! thats wicked that track i cant wait if he plays that or rapture

Don't forget the classics armin through in as well PVD - For an ANGEL and Cafe Del Mar - Energy 52(Marco V Remix) any reservation i had about armin i take it all back this man is a fucken genius, what a night.
by the way SQ-K i was in the cafe arena listening to Pete Hav 2 play ripping it up with out of the blue, fucken awesome build-up how did he not win. I got a sneeking suspicion i might know u lol
sounds like it was a great night....you lucky buggers! so how was JOOF!? is there any chance of a tracklisting? argh i wanna hear all about it! And what was with that Dj comp...did you guys even know about it, or were you just ment to go there and spin with whatever they had.
please tell more
hee hee
i'm sooo pumped up now.
i hope they leave some for the perth addicts
awsome! i cant wait!
STIPSY! I WANT THE WEALTH!
OMG THAT WAS AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Whoooooooo!!!!!!!!!
I think I got there about 11:30ish, walked around for a bit, dissapointed that it was in the indoor courts and not Vodafone at least. Saw a bit of Midro, wasn't what I expected, it was alright! Not nrg kinda stuff like I thought it would be.
Checked out the cafe arena, saw the Channel V djs going at it, not bad! Saw West Brom go 1 up against Newcastle too!! Haha! Sent a couple of text messages to people telling them they need to get their arses down there hehe of course nobody replied
Went outside for the "meet up". ie me and Renegade, then Stipsy came past hehe. We were outside when 'out of the blue' was playing sq-k!
Checked out the progressive room, looked pretty small (hehe more on that later!), Renegade decided he would go check it out. I hung around the cafe arena for a while then decided to go see Jules and bumped into Renegade again who had returned! Satoshi wasn't on for another 30 mins so we had another chat and then I went off to Jules, Renegade said he'd catch us later in the main arena. lol yeah right! Haha I think that makes it 3 out of 3 Renegade! You piker!
Just kidding man.
Went down to Judge Jules, hung with Stipsy at the front while we listened and tried to ID tracks. I got bombarded by the fucking smoke machine, but some choice one liners from Stipsy kept me entertained, from a simple "boooo!", to "play some trance you fucking idiot!", to "there's a push remix and another one, this must be the wanker remix". lol also "ooh please play toca me fragma maite!" and "he's got ministary of sound annual maite fully sik!" hehe it was great.
A couple of tracks we ID'd was:
'Rank 1 - Awakening'
I can't remember exactly but I think it was like "Superchumba - Revolution" or something mixed with "Members Of Mayday - 10 in 01"
also love parade remix and something that almost sounded like an instant moments remix too.
A few good tracks, some good bass to keep me jumping! I'd never seen him live before either, I liked all the silly poses and facial expressions, also Mrs Judge Jules is alright too!!
Then Armin van Buuren!
That was mad! Seven Cities, Strange World, Time Is The Healer, Sunburn, and WTF??? For An Angel??????????? I decided to go get something to eat and drink when Armin was on and apparently he played For An Angel????? NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!! I missed it!!
I was walking back when I heard Time Is The Healer and I started running all the way back to the front hehe.
Dub.Wave was in there, also Cafe Del Marco V, Sound Of Goodbye and a couple of other ones that I have in sets but can't be stuffed digging up now! He was crying at one stage too! He had tears in his eyes, well thats what it looked like to us!! Hehe whether it was from the atmosphere/music, allergies or drugs is up to you!
That was pretty mad, I'd never seen Armin play either and only had a couple of livesets but it was great stuff!
And then onto John '00' Fleming!!! Man I was so looking forward to this!!!! It was awesome!!!!! Astral Projection, Logic Bomb, a few tracks from his Global Gathering set and all this awesome stuff! It was brilliant!! We were going crazy and Stipsy goes 'man if this is what I think it is its fucking awesome, great breakdown!' So I'm listening and I can't tell anything and he said the name, but it was wrong! I heard a familiar sound and we both knew it, looked at each other and at the same time yelled Cafe del Mar!!! and started jumping up and down going crazy hehe! And then Lethal Industry to follow it! It was crazy!!!! I was loving it sooooooo much!!!!!
After forgetting to bring 'Politics Of Dancing' to PvD in May, there was no way I was gonna get nothing out of this one so I had my 'For Your Ears Only' cover secure in my pocket! When some guy who was on the stage came past I gave it to him and he got it autographed for me! It didn't turn out too good because of the pen and the cover but I was so happy!!! What a great night!
And encores!! Digital Blonde - Mooga (Hemstock & Jennings Remix), Thrillseekers - Synestheasia (or whatever it is!) and I'm not sure but I think it was Liquid Child - Diving Faces, its in a set I have from last year, great stuff!! And he would have played more but they were kicking us out and he had to stop!
I think they were on a tight schedule and Mark James kept trying to stop him hehe. Haha which brings me onto another thing! We walked along to the side and went in to say hi to j00f and Mark was there of course, we said hi and were chatting away and I think Stipsy said 'how was the progressive room?' or something, and I blurted it man it was pretty small! Which I think pissed off Mark James or something, Stipsy said he had a funny look on his face hehe. I thought that was kinda funny
I mean it was tiny! Compared to the main arena and pretty much any other club I thought it was small, I guess Mark didn't appreciate me saying so!
There were a couple of lows though, the bloody smoke machine!!!! God damn that was annoying, I got home (thanks for the lift Stipsy!) and my face and eyes are all itchy! grrrrr. It was damn frustrating but I didn't want to move away from the front hehe. lol also a couple of unsure glances from Stipsy when I was shielding my face with my jacket hehehe.
Also I couldn't see any t-shirts for sale as souvenirs so I was dissapointed. Weren't many posters to nick either! lol I ripped down the set times and main arena poster but they were all taped together with ministry tour ones so I was walking away with this huge sheets of paper, and more one liners: "wtf are you doing man?" "I'm taking a poster dude!" "wtf are you going to do with that??" "stick it on my wall!" "you idiot! look at it! 1) its demented and 2) its demented! you idiot!" lol
Hehe although the "meet up" didn't really happen I still met a few TAs!! Good to meet people I hadn't before like SQ-K and Inacoma and everyone else!
HybridJunkie were you there?
Man it was a great night, I loved it! And I think I'm still on a high from it!!!!! Whooooo!!
IM EXCITED!!
sounds like you had an awesome time Philby, cant wait till he comes to Perth.
I think Ill be the only Sydney TA on tonight. The rest are at GK now! BASTARDS!

COMMUUUNIICAAAATION!!!!" and stipsy's mate steve actually drove us home but thanks for taking me still. lol cameo appearances by ricky 'the dragon' steamboat and george 'the animal' steele hehehehe. and the morons who just jumped over the rail and started jumping around on the stage near the end when j00f was playing yeah youre real good
fark i couldnt believe it! i was standing there shaking hands and talking to j00f and he knew me from his website!! when he was signing the cd cover! haha im still not over it!!!

Hmmm, how long does it take to drive to Perth? Up for a road trip?
That is a very good question though. WTF is Armin doing all week? Maybe he'll make a surprise turnup at Chemistry on Thursday night?
Oh well, at least we still get Ferry. And all you Melbourne and Sydney people, sucked in. We get Ferry in Adelaide's most intimate crappy nightclub. Last year he came about 2 hours before his set and just chatted with the crowd. And another good thing was there wasn't that big a turnout (if I remember correctly it was raining) which meant that he really respected those of us in the crowd who were going absolutely nutz. (I should really stop trying to justify why living in Australia's biggest hole is somehow advantageous)
Time to buy a TA T-Shirt. Want to get one too mr_stamper, we'd save heaps on the postage I guess.
InAcoma's singlet said it all: AvB is God.
Massive props to InAcoma for coming solo -- wasn't it worth it?

Okay, I'm a bit tired so this may be a bit short and not make a lot of sense.
Got there at about 12.00 and headed straight for what we thought as the progressive room - i.e. the Indoor Courts (we though the main arena was going to be Vodaphone Arena). When the guy who we thought was Mark James dropped "Age of Love" and "I Feel Love" back to back though, we soon caught on. Left soon after for the highly successful "TA Meet-Up" and after a quick chat with Philby I pissed off to go look for my friends, but then got a call from my uni mate who was in the VIP lounge so I went back there (which is where I bumped into Philby again I guess
) and had a quick dance to the house music in there before meeting my friends back in the Indoor Courts for Judge Jules' set.
I only saw about 20 minutes in the end, not really my cup of tea to be honest, though everyone around me seemed to enjoy it. But yeah, as soon as 1.30am rolled around it was time for us to go and see Satoshi...... well, nearly.
First we had to queue for 15 fucking minutes just to get into the place, then when we finally got in it was so bloody packed, hot and poorly ventilated it wasn't funny. As for Satoshi, I think he's definately moved away from his housier roots and well and truly into the progressive side of things. His set was more upbeat than his recent Nu-Breed CD, and had a definate housy tip to it even though, as I say, it's a fair way from the sort of housier stuff he used to produce/spin a few years back. He was bloody terrific, no bullshit, just the occasional smile when he pulled off a decent mix that got the crowd going (i.e. basically every single transition). It was the sort of no-nonsense prog stuff that you just can't stop moving to - relentless yet subtle. Very, very cool stuff and I'm glad I got the chance to see him.
We were only there for a little over an hour and a half in the end because the joint was just way too stuffy, which is bad planning on the organisers behalf. I'm not saying the prog room needed to be the size of Vodaphone arena, but it definately needed to be bigger, or at least better ventilated - it was probably 30+ degrees in there at that stage. Anyway, it did take away a bit from the experience, but the crowd in there was great and Satoshi really seemed to enjoy himself.
So having left there, and chilled a bit in the fresh air with a cig or two, we went back into the main arena to see Armin about 15 or so minutes into his set, just in time to hear him drop his own remix of Seven Cities. Perfect bloody timing I'd say.
As everyone else said he played a blinder (or at least, what I saw of him), and really seemed to enjoy himself, jumping around and clapping and so on. Messed up a couple of mixes from memory (where he - intentionally or not - dropped this breaksy track in the middle of one of his build ups which confused me no end) but all in all he got it most of it spot on and played one smooth trance set. By the time it hit 4.15 though I was beginning to tire and decided to leave Armin mid-set (please don't hurt me) to persue some deeper, darker beats in the prog room to keep me going.
Got in just in time to hear Satoshi drop his last track (some dark-as breaks remix of Up In Flames) before Chris Fortier came on to become the unexpected highlight of my evening. Initially I was worried about Chris Fortier playing the breaksier side of his repetoire (like his first bedrock CD) and my fears we realised when he mixed in a breaks track into Satoshi's last one, and then another couple of breaks tracks straight after. Not that I dislike breaks you understand, but only in the comfort of my own home. Waaay to difficult to dance to in a club/rave atmosphere.
Anyway, at this point I was considering going back into the main arena to catch the Armin/j00f transition, but then Chris picked it up in a big way. The music went from mid-tempo breaks into some up-tempo, straight up prog music that got me dancing and didn't let me stop. He just dropped one savage tune after another with flawless technique and the atmosphere just grew and grew in keeping with music he lay down. He let the set build really well, starting off with more minimal prog music then letting it build into this solid almost techy affair, before letting it culminate with Lemon 8's New York, New York which stripped the entire thing right back down with it's deep, deep beat and dark samples. This was where I had to leave when he started to play slightly more mellow, uplifting stuff, but I left knowing that unless j00f pulled off something special, I'd just witnessed my favourite set of the night. And he nearly did.
Again, I walked into the main arena with impecible timing, just in time to watch Mr Fleming drop Quest - Accelerator. If anyone can find me a track with a more massive beat drop I'd be very suprised. Gives me shivers every time.
Even though I was physically knackered by this stage (given all the dancing plus the fact that I'd been up at 8am the previous morning and then drinking all day in the members section of Flemington) but '00's not-quite-prog, not-quite-trance music kept me going very, very nicely. Much darker than the set I can remember from him @ TT, but then that's just the way a like it, so no complaints from me. I think I left the arena with my remaining mate at about 6.10 for a smoke and a quick rest with the intention of going to see Sean Quinn wrap up proceedings in the prog room, but even after a Red Bull, a rejuvinating cig and a decent sit down, we were both far too fucked to go on (plus my mate had to be at work by 9.00 that morning - poor bastard) so after appreciating j00f's set from the outside at the back for about 20 minutes, we caught a taxi home, thus ending our GK experience.
So yeah, that about it. Hope everyone in Sydney and Perth enjoy it as much as I did (and the other Melb TA's did from the sounds of it) and I can't wait until the next big event - though it's probably gonna take me a while to recover from this one. :-/
all i got to say it WOWWWWWWWWWW ARMIN.....
and I WAS FLYING WITH ARMIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ah shit yeah, that was definately one of the best nights i've had in a long while.
Arrive just after 1 and cruise around meeting up with other mates from here and there. Then we moved down to the prog room, no queues at this point, so we just waltzed on in. Yeah, the heat in that place was shocking and kinda unusual placement for it, but what the fvck, all good.
Waited around for Satoshi and this man stood up, and delivered. Farkin nice sounds pouring out of the speakers and onto the crowd. What was that he dropped in at about 2:15? Fark it was good, subtle, almost ambient build up then more elements come in with a funky, chunky bassline. I could've kept going to that all night.
But 3am rolled around and i knew where i had to be. Armin played what to me is the best set i've heard all year from any Dj (who has come down to melbourne to play). His opening track strapped me in and his remix of solar stone totally blew me away. The set was kicking and thumping and i was absolutely loving it, picking tracks left, right and centre, well, just left and right then.
And then came the moment i was wishing for. The deep warbling synths and thumping bass was creeping in with a familiar tone that signalled the arrival of Pulser - Cloudwalking (Beat Pushers remix), and with that, i went absolutely mental. Ah, fvck i love that tune.
With the sound of goodbye ringing in my ears, i knew this set was just about over and i was now so pumped the clanging of two saucepans could have made me dance. But Joof came on and delivered so much more. Quest - Accelerator was a tasty surprise and fvck did it scare all the 'newbies' when the bass kicked in, funny sight to see.
Joof's encores were great and his i really enjoyed his set, a deeper trance, more proggy, all up, very good.
It had all ended too soon, but thats what you get for an event you've been looking forward to for god knows how long. My only gripe? Uni is back and i've done no work.
The photos are in development, i'm still recovering but what a fvcking fantastic night that was.

but fuck it was ssssooooo worth it
however i can take pics of my finger
rock on -- a foto!
I couldn't recall whether we got a pic taken of us (I was well wasted, methinks) but that's good to hear. I'll PM you my email address.
I'm pretty sure my mate mikkaa (currently TA in training) got a pic of at least the 3 of us, so I'll hafta get that scanned too.
My gripes about GK (no fault of anyone's but mine):
Missed out on the TA meet... I was there at 12.30 but I couldn't see a 00 fleming t-shirt anywhere. I waited for about 10 min but mates were getting impatient... sorry guys... next time.
I was supposed to be front row center... but all the ppl from my area who went, which is most of the ppl I know were right near the speaker between the 2 entrances (obviously they're not TAs
). So I ended up there, not wanting to be a loner. I missed out on seeing Armin go off from such a distance. I missed out on the start (first 30 min) of his set. Might have to check him out @ ZOS this weekend. Hopefully I can get guestlist organized.
Now the good stuff:
Now that the gripes are out of the way, Gods Kitchen was fooking awesome!!! From the moment I started dancing in front of the DJ before Judge Jules with a hot babe on my shoulders, to the moment I could no longer hear the bass from Melbourne Park, I felt like I was in paradise. I was so excited and it was wort all of it. Didn't want to concentrate on what tracks were being played, but I noticed from the start of Fleming's set that he wouldn't be playing Nothin(Mix 2)
. All in all me and 25 mates had a ball - 'nuff said.
Can't wait for Summadayze now.
