Welcome to New York! Advice NY TA's
I see that the welcome thread hasn't been posted in since 2012, so here I go. Maybe a random suggestion besides the usual landmarks of the city, I'd appreciate it! Flying in first weekend in April, and staying 4 nights at the muse hotel. Depending on the acts, lm open to venture into pacha(I know, I know), marquee, sankeys, etc etc
Thanks in advance!

Output, output, output, oh and Output.
I couldn't care less if those other venues burned down.
Dont take "molly" from a kid wearing neon clothes and a hat that says twerk team......and yes output is def the spot to go!

I actually went to Sankeys last friday on a whim (and i was pretty toasty) but i had a great time. Seems the place has improved since last time i was there back in november. I really like what they did with the basement.
Output is the #1 spot though.

| Originally posted by CarS other than the Sunday nights with T&F, only going by ear as to that residency, the place is a snobby m&b type venue, with a shit attitude, and way too many fraunch there. Physically very nice, true, but spare me that shit. (see the recent Wruhme thread to make up your own mind on the door there../) man you're gonna get it from around here, lol! Kidding aside, I actually agree with you, we're in the minority here though. I haven't really had many truly bad nights there. Girls and boys night on Friday is their better offering, forget that Sat. bright night crap. Used to do a lot, but nowadays, most often there's more compelling bookings elsewhere, and that includes Marquee btw, making it hard to actually go. Kalkbrenner was really good there... Two other clubs that should get a mention: TBA Brooklyn, on Wythe: nice little place, often has really good bookings (Nich Hoeppner was there a while back, for ex.), many free or very cheap nights, and mid-week too when elsewhere is kinda dead anyway, see their website, or via RA. Cielo is the other one, still like the place, if the booking is good, no reason not to check out. Last time there for DVS1, and that was a nice night. If your music horizon goes beyond techno /(x-)house / trance / any dance form, check out Brooklyn Bowl's website. Many many great bookings at B.Bowl, and it's right across the street from Output. Often, you'll find a great early 8 pm booking right before something at Output, syncs well. Ohters around there: Music Hall of Williamsburg, Cameo Gallery, Glasslands, 285 Kent, Baby's All Right (very chill staff)... |
Thanks guys, for the recommendation music wise. Feel free to chime in on other stuff.
As for output, would you be saying the same thing if the roster consisted of David guetta, tiesto, avicii and the Swedish house mafia?
For those who've been to Vegas, I'm more of the xs, marquee, type of spot kind of guy. Not drais or artisan....not that I'm a fan of the cheese heads I posted above.

Solomun at Marquee april 4th, crowd should be pretty good- babe central, music will be even better.
Just don't go to Marquee on saturday.
Sankeys might have some good bookings for saturday april 5th, nothing posted as of yet, but they're pretty consistent with the talent they bring.
oh and get tickets on ResidentAdvisor.net especially for marquee, unless your planning on getting a table. you'll save 20-60 bucks and a 30-45 minute wait.
sankey's has a guest list that the moderator euphoria might be able to hook you up with.

friends IS a comedy, and far is in the head only.
if you live in the LV outskirts, its way farther to Wynns than W-burg is from downtown.
from the garden to output is no farther than from the garden to east upper east side.
hop skip and a jump...
as to food, its all we can do to buy tickets and booze for parties, whose got dough left for fancy chow?
some of the best bagels in the city, the real old lemberg deal, do The Bagel Hole in park slope.
but thats Chandler territory, lol.
high style, old fashioned French the way they used to do it, Capsuto Freres, think thats TriBeCa.
quality brews and real deal Bavarian food, Zum Schneiders, 7th and C.
Order the Haxn, and a Salvator (or whatever -ator suds they have, yum.)
Diag across the street , just south of 7th on C, Edie and the Wolf, quality Austrian bistro, the Austrian food and wine counterpart to Schneiders, great wine list. or try their watering hole, block North of E&tW on C.
While there, check out NuBlu, 5th and C, look for blue light over door.
your Marquee question:
Basic nights are good, others are like described above.
dont worry about why, just buy tix on RA, makes life easier.
finally, you might get decent bookings in LV, but seeing as your posting on a music site, you obviously care for something about this stuff.
Soooo: why would you pass up real stuff city way, like CityFox for ex, or Output for that matter, for standard entertainment fare? Back home its only their pastiche, copy-fauxness
a nicer AC is still just that...

Man, in that case you gotta go to our legendary Webster Hall! On a typical saturday night there are tons of good looking women and the place itself is pretty spectacular. If it happens to be some good night when they have a solid booking it's like a paradise on earth. NYC's best kept secret.

As my initial post requested, how about places to see other than the tourist traps, who's got the best pizza, etc. for example, this one I know, and Im sure you all do too, but if there was a big boxing fight going on at the garden I know I'd be at Jimmy's corner throughout the week. Not there to party, so I'm not going to venture to out to Brooklyn, as chandler said on friends "Brooklyn is far." |
