-- DJ's using their live sets to promote their own music - good/bad?

A lot of the dj mixed sets contain a lot of tracks produced/written by that dj.

eg: Chicane live & Palladium, which is almost only chicane tracks.

So they use mixes at dance events to play (& thus promote) their own music.

I can understand if they play 1/2 of their own tracks - if they are big at the time, but what about djs who play alot of their own stuff.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing, do you think?

I think it's ok for a dj to play a couple of his/her own tracks, cuz it probably represents the dj's sound, but a set consisting of almost only the dj's tracks will probably be too repetetive if the dj isn't a varied producer, or just too predictable.

I don't think it's a crime if the DJ plays a few (read a few) of his own songs because after all you are going to hear him spin. I have heard PVD spin quite a few times and he always drops at least a few of his songs and the crowd just loves it, of course he also plays other tunes but you are always waiting for him to drop "Angel" or "We are Alive" or his other great tunes. Some people might say that the DJ's are doing this to promote themselves but I don't agree with this unless the guy plays 10 of his own tracks a one by someone else.

Cosmic Gate is an example of a Dj(team) that plays a lot of their own songs. On Rose Montag they played a good set with almost all the tracks of theirselves. But I think it isn't varieded enough when they plays only their own songs. A bit varieded is nice.

I think that Chicane set was live production, not a DJ set. If that is the case then I can understand why it would be all his stuff. But if you've ever seen Hybrid live, they do an AMAZING job of mixeing ther live stuff with other records. the best live act I've ever seen.

eh? there ain't nothin' wrong with it. it's a GREAT way for djs to debut their new stuff as well as replay old favs for the crowd. there ain't really any "promoting" if it's their own track if it's a big name dj, because most likely 90% of the crowd will already KNOW the song. heheheh. okay i'm just being a smartass. lol.

i don't think theres anything wrong at ALL.. even if a DJ played a full set with ONLY his tracks.. makes no diff to me..
the key thing is..... if the crowd is dancing happily.. then the DJ is doin his job...

the reason dj's use thier own traxx is simple. Because if they have produced/remixed it, then they know every rise and fall, every beat, every part of the song; thus helping in the mixing process (as they would say).

Armin Van Buuren and Mauro Picotto are perfect examples of this. But who really complains? They love it when the crowd moves 2 thier stuff. And the crown loves moving to thier stuff.

And also Nothing wrong with a bit of promotion but it really aint promotion. Because the normal bogan punters you get, wouldnt have a fucking clue what music the dj could be playing. (It's on the more educated l33t N3T g33ks who would know - j/k j/k) hehe .

I think it depends on the situation and on the way the dj presents his stuff. I can still remember Gary D. playing a set way back in '95. He was already playing for 3 hours or so and then started playing his own songs or remixes. O.k., I've heard him play 2 of them in a row, but this time he played 12 (!) of his songs in a row, and everybody was loving it! It was pure fun!
But at other times I deejay with Mirko Milano and he plays 4 or 5 of his tunes in a 1 1/2 hour set and it gets boring because there is no variation. I especially dislike DJs playing there new single twice in a short set. That's just promotion in my opinion...

I've never heard a dj playing his own track more than once in any set, I have heard club djs playing the same track (when it is really big) twice in one evening - buys the $#$#@ outta me & the funny thing is that everyone around me goes mad & I'm thinking "running out of vinyls there ain't he" - I think that's really unprofessional playing the same track twice - if it is or isn't the djs own track.

i see nothing wrong with jd's playin their shit live, it represents their unique sound in opinnion, a sound that is not found in any other tracks... for example, someone mentioned chicane, i honestly can't think of any other artist that has the same or similar sound like chicane...

orbital does to some extent... djs will be djs. they've gotta promote their stuff somehow, especially if it's new.

I think its quite easy for them to spin their own stuff as they know it inside out, as they made it. I don't like it when the artist really overplays their stuff, liike a recent set i heard where Ferry Corsten played like 5 of his own tracks in a row, which in my opinion is a bit too much.

basically, heres the rule of thumb, if it is a good track, that hasnt been played a ton who cares.. chican - live @ the paladium, is one of my favorite sets, even though its basically their "cd" live, it still is a good set.

the live at Palladium is a great set. It is pretty much a live version of the album - except for swopping for some great thrillseekers mixes & such.

Hey where in the world is the palladium. Theres a palladium here but i doubt its the same one ?

think of it from the dj's point of view. it's nice when everyone's dancing to the music you spin, but it's even nicer when everyone is dancing to YOUR music, right???
