Resonance shelf ?

School me on this , how often do you folk use it during your eq stage?, what type of instruments is it more favourable for ? And why hasn't this technique been discussed much on the boards?

It's useful for a lot of instruments, if you need to boost some frequencies. Essentially, it's just automatically creating a dip in the frequencies adjacent to the ones that you're boosting. I rarely use EQs that have the feature, but I do it manually with a parametric EQ (usually Pro-Q) by just another band(s) around the band that I'm boosting. I get more control that way. I tend to use it mostly on the high end of vocals (boosting to add "air", dipping the surrounding frequencies to reduce shrillness), and on instruments with a lot of low frequencies (i.e., kick and bass, sometimes toms). I tend to be most surgical in the highs and lows, and work with a broader stroke on the mids, so I rarely have a need for it for in the midrange frequencies.

Cool thanks for that defitnely cleared that up , I'm starting a engineering course on Monday taught by one of Chris lord alges apprentices , the guy can go on a 30 minute break down of transistors in a pre-amp or the history of ns 10's in the shear mention of any of those things so I wanna make sure I compile a List of useful production related questions so I can make the most use of my buck ,
