Chicane: “Mark Knight has Sampled ‘Saltwater’ Without My Permission”

I'm surprised not many people seem to be talking about this:

Mark Knight's latest track ‘The Return Of Wolfy’ appears to directly sample Chicane's ‘Saltwater’. Apparently this sample was not authorised prior to release, and Chicane is understandably a bit pi55ed off!

Strangest thing for me is that the Saltwater sample really doesn't fit (in Mark's track), it seems out of place...

Who is Chicane?? Who is Mark Knight?!?

Is it just me, or does it feel like the Mark Knight music video is only halfway done? Like, I was enjoying it, but then it just ended...

edit: apparently this is the first part of a trilogy so we'll see.

oh and

wow that vocal sample is so out of place good thing he didn't stick a 2pac verse in there aswell

It's electronic music...trance nonetheless. Everyone's sampled something. Chicane himself is guilty of shamelessly jacking the entirety of Gary Numan's "Cars."

In fact, the vocal in Saltwater as sung by Maire Brennan is taken from the song "Harry's Game" by her band Clannad.

The way I see it, Mark Knight sampled just a tiny piece of this same song for what is, in my opinion a fairly decent track. Chicane is just another typical corporate Armada goon looking to capitalize off something that wasn't his to begin with.

Actually, Maire Brennan re-recorded her vocals specifically for Saltwater with new lines, hence his grievance. And the point is that Bracegirdle at least paid for sample clearance on his tracks.

But yes, it is a bit of a non-story. If he thinks there's any money to be made he'll probably sue, as is usually the case, and Mark Knight will surrender a share of royalties or pay a big one-off fee. Has happened a thousand times when a dance record with an uncleared sample becomes big enough to be worth the effort of legal action.

And I still heart this:

…or when a record and it's artist has been big for long enough to be constantly worth the legal effort any time there's an opportunity for it. This broke just over a month ago:

This is one of a select handful of unicorn classics that still makes the lasers burn brightly in my mind. I probably still have that set somewhere, and it's still up on TA anyway. I don't really want to listen to it, just having a little flashback moment. Now that you mention it, the bit that was sampled wasn't in the original song by Clannad, so you are correct.
As you said, a pretty unimportant thing still. The bit that was sampled was so minor that there probably isn't a whole lot to the case. I think it all depends on if he can get his label behind it, which all depends on whether or not Mark Knight's song was commercially successful. I know many companies simply attempt to send an NDA telling the "perpetrator" so to speak to remove all instances of the offending product if it's not something that appears to be making a whole lot of money.
One of my original tracks I put up on youtube was removed in some bullshit case because of a voice clip I sampled but I was never personally contacted, presumably because I was not making any money off the track.

i credit saltwater for getting me into trance. napster'd mp3's, on a minidisc

mark knight stole some kylie minogue vocals for one of his new tunes also.

i quite like his remix of faithless' music matters, must say.

Saltwater is definitely a timeless track. So beautiful, gets me every time.

big deal. Chicane is another irrelevant artist in 2014.

People should do it more, we wouldn't have had the two O'Fortuna's in 1992 otherwise

The dumb thing about this is that usually the owner will give it away or do it for a small sum when it's something old. I know countless producers who have got to use major samples by contacting the person, BJ'ing their ego a little and asking nicely (or doing it via a friend who knows them etc).

No Xtravaganza Recordings legal council will go to town on Mr Knight and he'll probably end up wishing he never used it in the first place.







..................that is unless this all just a marketing ploy to get people talking about Mark's new record
