As Trance progressed throughout its years with technology....

how is it possible that with more advanced technology, most of the tracks nowadays still have nothing on the older stuff?

I just don't understand it. Is it nostalgia getting the best of me?

Listening to the newer tracks nowadays you can hear a more crisp and clear sound, but it's almost like the "warmth" of the stuff doesn't sound organic.

I heard, when EDM was made with the actual analogue hardware, that's what gave it that more amplified and "warm" sound that the older tracks in the 90s used. Apparently, a laptop DJ software cannot mimic a powerhouse equipment that were the analogue setups.

One thought that come to mind is, all the talented minds who used to create the tracks of the past, have simply just moved on....

Pretty sure you're living in a bubble.

Truth lies somewhere in the middle.

Reveal me the truth my master.

I'm waiting to be enlightened.

There is plenty of music with a similar vibe as trance being made today utilizing modern technology to the fullest extent, its just not called trance directly.

Btw Dj Pulviose, I think you should check Paulinho's music. You can hear some of it in the wip thread in the production forum. He is the new Tiesto, he is the future of Trance.

Here is a picture of the new god of trance.

But don't put too much pressure on the guy, and remember to talk slowly cause he needs some time to elaborate things.

He's quite sharp actually, but he needs time to switch on...

Oliver Lieb - Inside Voices
Steve Roach - Back to Life
Robert Rich - Nest
Sundial Aeon - Minmesis, Hypnosis

Any Solar Fields album in the past decade and pretty much anything on Ultimae records.

Its not hard to find "trance" music in other genres if you have no preconception of what trance music should be.

Even in the 90s there were a lot of digital synths really, it's just that a lot of them were hardware.

Heck even in the 80s they were starting to get prominently used thanks to Yamaha's line of FM synths.

Posted by Dj Pluviose on Jul-04-2014 06:15:

I don't know the exact number, but I feel like roughly 70% of all the EDM stuff out right now in the mainstream is digital synth software stuff. because most of it sounds weak... bland

the price of entry went down, so we had an influx of shit producers.

the worst thing today is the over-compressed, over-saturated, impenetrable sound to the tracks most people are doing, at the mastering stage i think.

there is no acoustic or organic feel to them. just feels... opaque as fuck, horrible.

basically, we have just went too far when there was no need. as if they are looking for the next 'thing', when we just really ran out of ideas.

there are still good tracks of course, though there has to be a balance - to let a track to breathe. i think some producers see this as a sign of being outdated - or that it is inferior quality.

this

with the upbringing of beatport and online stores it makes anyone with a computer able to get out there. before pressing vinyls was expensive and shit didnt make it through. now today its a free for all.

you just have to spend more time and really look. rely on your insights (good labels and artist hunting) pay attention to non A title DJs that play stuff instead of just chart toppers like what A DJs do.

there have been no major advancements -- mostly automation and copy-paste composition of pre-arranged tracks.

at this rate I don't think there will be another generation for trance to shine properly.

all the acid and psy sounds have completely disappeared. it's a shame, was hoping to hear some newer stuff that sounded like the old stuff

So the EDM moniker strikes again or whats this new fangled production called?

Yeah, I think you and I are going to be more than disappointed coming to tranceaddict and getting suggestions of vile male vocalised generic no breakdown, bouncy edm thrown in our faces. Don't worry, its not us, its them !

Downward Spiral was released in 1994, wrap your head around that

it ain't the technology its the mother******s using it

I definitely know what you mean...I think it all comes down to production techniques as opposed to the sounds being used.
Whether it's a vst or an actual physical synthesizer, it's all just a computer. I work exclusively with software synths but due to the way I master everything, my tracks often end up with that old school sound you're talking about.
Producers these days are just too obsessed with "loudness wars", compression, sidechaining, boosting the highs to a shrill level and the lows to an extremely muddy level, etc. It just ends up making tracks sound like garbage. I avoid using modern production techniques at any cost, unlike some of my earlier work, and I can finally say I'm pleased with what I'm making.

Join me in the fight against the "Armada sound" as I call it and make some stuff yourself! Hell, if you make some decent tracks, I'll release 'em on digital retailers for you.

Yep, Beatport, iTunes, Amazon, Juno, you name it...even international retailers such as this...
http://recochoku.jp/album/A1000712013/

This is the way I see it: People aren't discovering good trance because there's not enough people making it. People get discouraged (I've even felt this way occasionally) because they see the same type of stuff being labelled, or mislabeled rather, as trance, and this is the stuff that gets pushed and tops Beatport charts. They say "Well, this sound is dominant, so nobody will ever listen to my songs if I produce traditional trance music..." and then they either give up on being a musician or join in adding more tracks that will be forgotten due to lack of any real heart or soul. They'll make tracks that fit in flash-in-the-pan genres such as trap, big room, electro house, etc whatever is the "now" sound, and their tracks will often go nowhere.
So the producers that say "I love trance, so I'm going to make some" never get discovered because there is so much of this cheap, mass produced garbage to wade through that calls itself trance that any real trance artists rarely ever get discovered.
We can combat that mass market domination by producing some good stuff ourselves. Music with integrity which stays true to its roots. I think if enough of us make these kinds of songs, we can eventually make trance popular again.
