Why Big Room "House" Music Sucks

some funny stuff in there. includes steve aoki, skrillex, uhh... some other popular artists right now

the video would be 10000x better if he used dark progressive instead of anthem trance.

I mostly couldn't tell which samples were supposed to represent which period, as it all sounded just terrible.

Which makes the representation of 1999 to 2002 a bit misleading, really. There was plenty of anthem cheese going around, but the prog reaction against it (if it was one) was just as strong.

Yeah, that too. Especially the big lights reading "AOKI" and the like. Good stuff.

I think the dude was simply trying to compare the EDM that was most likely prominent and similar to the stuff you hear today as the closest examples to look at.

It would probably be really hard to relate if it was something way more underground like Prog-Psy, darkpsy, ambient, or acid stuff.

Side by side though you could tell that even the cheese of the past was better.

The trance in that vid was far from cheese, it's like everyone forgot about acts like Special D and Tune Up...now that was cheese. What's in the vid is just basic anthem trance from the 99-01 period, not cheese by a longshot. Something being popular or well known doesn't inherently mean it's tasteless or poor in quality...to dismiss a track as tripe just because it got mainstream popularity is hipster bullshit.

Don't really care much for the vid; it's all a repetition of the same idea, but that bee flying around that DJ's head was fucking hilarious.

Yeah they're completely different. At least suburban train and sunrise (Tiesto remix) is somewhat credible since it is on dark tremor's list :3

I wonder how that guy is doing nowadays. Speaking of which his list say suburban train is epic trance, not anthem. Is that true?

Basic anthem trance IS cheese.

"B-b-b-b-but trance is not just music its a way of life" - people who actually think that way are far worse in my opinion than young kids going to clubs to jump to a newest Melbourne Bounce track thinking it is the best and most advanced shit ever.

Bullet In The Gun was friggin amazing. The Saturday mix was just the tip of the iceberg. The RITM and Solar Stone remixes were breathtaking.

That is probably true, but that's why it actually makes for a good comparison. The pop Trance of yesteryear will probably be far more memorable than the pop EDM of today. Maybe not. Maybe it's partly nostalgia, again, and years from now the kids of today will have nostalgia for the Dubstep drop. We'll see.

As for those who can't tell the difference between Bullet In The Gun and the modern "EDM" in the video need to check their ears. One gets you moving, the other gets you a migraine.

The newer people get tired of their music really easily. Avicii already said he's tired of levels and the entire scene is saturated and losing its originality, and some other people like Martin Garrix said he was extremely bored of his radio hit Animals.

Diplo also came out and said the big room house movement is saturated.

So we can at least get an idea of how memory it could be for the masses. The masses will always be looking for the next cool, big hip thing anyway.

Perhaps once they get really bored of their music, they'll dig back into some old school EDM even far before the gateway trance era.
