Beatport 45% off today

Just a heads up.

I'm bad at math, but it seems like it's not actually 45%. More like 25-30%

"This coupon will change in value throughout the day".

By the time I get home from work it'll be a waste of time. I've been following their three step discount thing, so hopefully Step 3 will be 50% off (they usually have that kind of deal around Christmas).

The window for the other two codes has expired. Step 3 lands on the 9th December. You're supposed to have used each step discount to unlock the next step, but the code hasn't been personalised for my account or anything. It's just been STEP1 and STEP2, so you may as well type in STEP3 on the 9th and see what happens.

This 45% sale was always going to be bullshit. It was probably 45% for about an hour in the middle of the night and will continue dropping throughout the day until it's piss-all by the evening when most people will be able to use it. But, of course, the small print telling you the percentage will drop is a lot smaller than the gigantic 45% DISCOUNT banner on the email.

Yup, just tried to apply the CYBERMONDAY coupon code: took my cart down from $207 to $145, which works out to a discount of about 30%. Still sizable, but 15% shy of my motivation to splurge.

Totally blew it, though, as I noticed the email as it arrived in my inbox, and just assumed it would be for a longer period of time and that I would receive another email when the discount had changed. I guess didn't think they were gonna doorbuster this shit.

Ugh. Seems like Beatport are being c unts as usual. They have the best storefront but their business department can go fuck itself. Sadly, you are almost forced to use them since they have so much stuff exclusively.

I'm actually glad you brought that up, because I was almost going to create a separate thread for this: is there any reason to not purchase the same tracks through Amazon?

I often do a search of the music I crate in order to hear a full sample, which usually turns up SoundCloud, but also Amazon, and I've never seen them offer a track for more than $.99. What's the deal there? I'm guessing the label uploads it in the same bit quality? It seems like an especially good alternative to Beatport's ridiculous prices for new releases, and even for back catalogue material that sells for $1.50.

Amazon, much like Apple, are so big that they can dictate a price point.

Beatport has more of a niche market, so they try to make money through a higher baseprice and bullshit fees.

Mp3s should be same quality, but I don't think Amazon sells lossless? That's really the biggest thing that I hate about Beatport, they act like the care about the state of DJing but they heavily discourage people from playing .wavs with their fucking absurd lossless fees.

Amazon MP3s are VBR quality, so if you think you're going to play the tracks out on a good soundsystem you probably want the 320-or-better of Beatport. Personally I do buy most tracks on Amazon MP3, especially stuff for my ambient sets. Chill out DJs don't get to play on top spec soundsystems.

Or they figure they could make them sellable through advertising banners like "deliver the highest quality to your fans." I used to not touch anything that wasn't a .wav, until I began imagining the obscene cost and space requirements of owning all the music I wanted in .wav format.

Obviously, they make more money this way, but bandwith is so cheap these days that charging anything extra for lossless is a joke. It's a practice from last decade that somehow made it's way into 2014.

Bandcamp gives you whatever format you want for the same price and i'm very happy that more and more labels are using them, the only advantage that Beatport has is that their storefront is much better for digging and keeping up with new releases.

Storage is expensive. I have run into issues with storage costs for my own company (i do genomics work) that made me realize how every bit counts as far as storage is concerned. Its probably why amazon doesn't sell lossless actually, since it would cut into their margin.

If they do sell lossless though (ie. Beatport), it's stored on their servers anyways.

Amazon sells vbr because regular people don't care or don't want lossless. Don't they run the Azure cloud service? I doubt they'd care about a bit of extra data from their music service. I wouldn't be surprised if they have the lossless they receive from the labels still lying around somewhere anyways.

But I got the step3 code for 50%: P71RG3 but that shouldn't work if you didn't use step1 and step2.

This is a great point.. I still wonder how much of that actually goes to the artist. The whole thing seems like a total racket to me

It sucks you could only use musiclover just once.

i just typed step3 in coupons (my crate was at 127) and it took 50% off and my bill ended up being 63$

Yeah, it still seems to be working. I've used it four times now.

I wanted to buy a bunch of progressive songs from 2003-2007 but I couldn't because out of the 24 hours I couldn't really make a decent search after work. Next year, maybe.

Ha, that's pretty much what I did - just bought a load of old prog I don't really have any need for, but would like to play around with.
