Talking I Just Got A Gig For Tomorrow Night!!

They want to use my mixer (DJM600)

they told me I could spin a set, get in free, plus some othe special perks

this could mean good things..im trying to get into a dj crew over here...this could be my ticket to spin at other events

i havent really spun out over here....more in the chicago/northern IL area

this is going to be fun

i think they are expecting 2000+ maybe

Thanks

yes, i was sure to mention that i would only let them use it under the condition that no drinks were to be near it

Also be careful if they want to mount your mixer into a rack for the night. I've seen them scratch the face panels around the screw holes before! Especially if you have a black DJM600 it would look pretty bad with scratches on it.

congrats.. be weary of the other dj's using ur mixer (i would be if i was lending such an expensive piece of equipment that wasn't being "rented" from me).. although the djm600 seems to be the mixer that most clubs (at least in so cali.) use.. surprising amounts of dj's don't really know how to use it to its full potential.. i think the thing that gets to most of them is how to control the headphone volume w/o messing w/ the booth volume (this controls the monitors).. so u might wanna give a quick rundown to dj's that aren't familiar with that setup.. i know it woulda been helpful to a lot of the dj's i seee that get that confused look on their face until they finally get the feel for how it works... i wouldn't even bother explaining effects since u will probably be talking to them in the dj booth as they are getting their stuff ready and if they happen to actually hear anything u are saying, it will probably be every other word at that.. eitherway, im surprised u are doing this for free.. especially if they're using ur mixer.. but shiet, at least you get to spin and theres no complaining about that! good luck!

i was using one on the weekend and when we turned the headphone volume up, you could hear the track we were cueing coming out of the speakers

is this a common problem? is there a special way im supposed to turn up the headphone volume other than turning up the knob that says 'headphone volume'? hahah

too be honest w/ u kid lax, my friend has this mixer, i've used it at least 100 times (practice & parties) and at gigs too.. and i still have no fuckin' clue how to adjust the volume.. i just end up hoping that the dj in front of me gets it set right.. i dunno, this mixer's "booth volume" and headphone volume confuse me, and really, i ended up believing that the booth adjuster (which basically sends the feed to different monitors controlled the headphone volume.. for 1 thing, u can't have the eq's all the way up if the headphone volume is high or else it creates distortion, but u can't exactly cut the eq levels in the middle of the mix because then u hafta adjust the master volume to counter the volume reduction, and if u dare touch the master volume, the club's sound guy will come ram u in the arse.. as far as you having the cued up song coming through the monitors, i believe that is just a matter of adjusting the cue/mix or similar functioning knob.. but im sure liquid can clear this up for us.

The volumes are not that hard to understand. Each of the slide bars, of course control the volumes for each of the channels or the master volume. The booth volume will control what ever the booth out on the back of the mixer is plugged in to. Most of the time I'd imagine that these would be the dj booth monitors. This should only increase the volume of the booth output. The headphone volume is controlled several different ways. First off, there is absolute volume which is controled by the "level" knob (on the bottom left) which has the -infinity and 0dB markings just below it. The other one is to adjust the percentage of cue to live.

Now this is where it gets kind of complicated to understand in words, though I assure you it would only take a minute to explain if I could show you. The small rectangular buttons just above the volume sliders are the cue/live for the headphones (as printed just above the buttons.) There is another knob just under the effects processor that is called channel select. This selects which channel is your cue live channel. This way, any effect, sample etc will take effect on that channel and not your cue track etc. Back to the buttons, you want the master volume cue selected and then whichever channel is your cue track channel.

So every time you transition from channel one to channel two, let's say, you'll have to switch the channel select from one to two, and then back again after the next transition.

Anway, I know it sounds confusing but after working with it for 5 mins you'd get the hang of it. So the only other thing affecting headphone volume is the master volume. Since the master volume is one of the headphone cues, then the master volume slider will affect the volume level coming out of your headphones too. This is no different than being able to adjust the cue track channel via the gain knob.
