The Guvernment - Share your fav memories/sets
We are 3 events away from Guv closing for good. I'm feeling kind of sad that I never got to make it out to any of the closing parties. So I thought it would be fun to share a few fav memories...
The first time walking up to skybar at LOL 06 at around 545 and being blasted in the face by sun light... I will never forget that feeling of total shock that it was morning time and the event was still raging...
Lawler being carried off the stage at the 2nd Viva... legit dragged off the stage "Weekend at Bernies" style...
SvD total assault on my ears at Guv Anny. (I think either the 10th or 8th anny. party)...
Eddie Halliwell played the re-opening after the renovations were done to the main room... that man was on fire that night... holy shit was he...
Steve Aoki knocking his laptop over into the crowd twice in a single set...
The first time I stroked the furry wall in the gallery lol
Those amazing Halloween parties specifically when Carl Cox and Lawler played...
those All Access parties in the early days I will miss most of all, I will even miss the one way traffic lol
met so many awesome people along the way as well... and some sketchy ppl... and I always ran into the most random ppl there as well lol
so many amazing memories in that place...
The single most stand out memory I have from the Guv is still my first visit in September of 2002, for the very first Labour of Love. It was my first time at a 19+ party, the first time in the Guv/KH complex, and the first (but not last) time seeing Armin, Danny Howells, and Deep Dish.
I had been to a few parties at the Better Living Center, but nothing quite like the Guv (lazers!)
The night started poorly with a 2 hour wait to get in 10pm-midnight, and extreme over crowding. At one point, trying to go from the Orange Room to the Guv main room, the hallway got so jammed, the bouncers closed things off, and made everybody back up and reverse direction. Thankfully the night was a blast after that.
It was my first time seeing Armin, and first time seeing trance with those lasers in the main room. The vibe in the room was amazing, Armin had a huge, genuine smile on his face, the crowd was very friendly and just plain fun. Of course it was way over packed, so we went up to the balcony to get a birds eye view, and boy was that a sight. Colours, and arms, and lights, it is etched into my memory!
Fast forward a little bit, and I am in the KH listening to some damn sexy, and grooving house music. Who ever it was, just kept building, and building, smooth as can be, not a beat out of place. Finally at the peak of their set, streamers come flying out of the ceiling, again perfectly timed. Being a noob, I was thinking 'how did they time it so well?'. The DJ finishes, climbs down the scaffolding, and I had to meet him, find out who had me grooving non-stop. Well I got to meet him, got a picture, and found out it was Danny Howells, I was an instant fan for life. He was incredibly nice, and humble, can he be described in any other fashion?
Now for the reason I was there, Deep Dish. All I can say is that played exactly how I had expected them to, Deep, pounding and long. Of course the crowd started to thin out, as it was getting late (early?), but they just didn't stop. I look off into one of the corners of the KH, and did a double take. There is a middle aged, stalky man, in a pink, vinyl Little Bow Peep costume, staff and all. That was the icing on the cake, and we decided it was time to head out. It was 8:30am, we are spit out on the Queens Quay and it is bright and sunny, jarring. I just had a few thoughts: 1) how are they still playing? 2) Where can I get some food 3) Did "that" just happen?
We ended up falling asleep on the go train back to Mississauga, and waking up in Oakville, fantastic. I had left the house at 8pm the night before, and got home at 1pm. Not bad for a 17 hour outing.
There is my review, only 12 years late.

At LoL 06.
He demonstrated some versatility, not just the banging trance: some electro and techy sounds too.

Any good stories from back in the days?
Where do I start? There are literally too many memorable & crazy Guv stories to mention, and the same goes for parties. Need to think about it for a couple of days.
I'm reminded that my shitty memory is half the reason I took all these videos lol.
Here's my favourites from over the years. Going through my archives brought back SO many good memories. I knew I went to a lot of great parties there but it's easy to forget how many until you actually going through them one at a time in one sitting.
One great set that I'm missing videos from is when Carl Cox went b2b with Loco Dice in the main room.
My first camera wasn't so great but this is my fondest early memory

After careful consideration, I'd have to say that my most memorable night at The Guv complex was Tiësto's official first time at the Guv/Koolhaus on Oct. 6, 2001 Guv's 5yr Anniversary. I say 'official' because they tried to start a Wednesday night that lasted about 5weeks, and Tiësto was one of the first acts to get booked, an it also included Max Graham. As for the Mainroom, I would have to say that my most memorable night there was Armin's first event at Guv in April 2002. It was the first time I would party with a fellow TOTA who would be the future mother of my daughter, and it was the first time I would meet many of you creeps
edit: My buddy caught Tiësto's signed headphones when he threw them into the crowd that day in Koolhaus.
Also, a notable mention goes to Decadence ll 2005 with Carl Cox & AvB. NuNRG was insane that night!
Smirnoff event/ DJ Steve Lawler in the main room or up on the skybar/ Mauro Picotto Canada day event in the main room / Deep *Deep Dish minus the last time they were @ Guv / Mark Oliver and those 9hr sets that taught lessons/ M&S Skybar sessions / Family day with Dubfire, Nic fanculli and others/ Armin van Buuren / Ferry Corsten fist time in the main room/ Digweed/ Sasha when he showed up lol/ Goldclub series and the introduction of James Zabiela... and last but not least the nights I don't remember..lol
great videos kotsy! so many memories. i feel so privileged to have seen Underworld in the kool haus so many years ago. what a performance that was!

"Although I've divorced myself emotionally from The Guvernment, a decade ago, I appreciate the venue as world class.
From 1999 to 2004, I was a regular at The Guvernment complex. From the rise of ZRF Productions to the password only nights at the Drink and the insanity of the Goldclub Lounge, those years of nightclubbing taught me things that I use to this day.
Back then, how could you tell that the random disaster stumbling down the stairs would later become a valued friend? How would you know somebody in your class -that you never talked to in school btw - had the same secret life on the weekends as you?
The music and party interconnected people, forging long time friendships. I'd have to thank Guv for that.
(There's nothing like losing your friend in the Guv for a big party, especially before cell phones/texting took off. Our only solace was, "if you get lost, meet me at the chains".
I'm not going to be caught dead saying goodbye to Guv in person, so I might as well say it here. An era in Toronto nightlife is ending...thanks for the memories."
